That is too bad. CFL is down to two uninjured starting QBs. Mitchell will be next.

This has been a really tough season for QBs in the CFL. I really feel for Zach - he was having an all-star season to have this happen is just crushing for him and for the team. I wish him all the best.

The NFL has put a whole bunch of rules in place to protect their investments in their QBs. If you even cough on Brady you are given a 15 yard penalty and a $200K fine from the league office. Should the CFL do something similar? Clearly with only 2 starters remaining there is an issue.

I'm sure the player's union has been thinking along those lines, IRBS.........I'd be surprised if they weren't. I would like to see more protection for our QBs. I know a $200K fine would never fly here in Canada but the penalty might be a good idea. Still, things happen out there. The injury to DD was a freak accident and those you can never protect against. The hit on Zach was not a bad one - again it was simply the way he landed. I guess you could say I am of two minds about your idea but will mull it over some more.

Surprise, surprise BC fans..............your guys are up 15 - 0 over the Esks late in the 2nd Q. Esks committing lots of errors and chalking up many costly penalties.

BC is playing the better more disciplined game today and the score shows it - they lead 23 - 7 with about 5 minutes to go in the 3rd.

Well I lost the last seconds of the game due to 'regional blackout' but the Lions did not fair well in the final quarter as the Esks surged back to take, I believe it is a 3 point lead and probably the win - they had the ball in the final seconds of the game - so I figure Edmonton got the win. Good effort by the Lions.

Oh.............I just got the feed back. Lions have the ball with 10 seconds left and need a TD and a convert to win.......but no time ran out on them and the Esks take it 29 - 23.

Heck of a great comeback by the Hoovers in the 4th Q tonight - they tied the game then went on to win it by 3 points. Their rookie kicker Castillo - first appearance in the CFL - was absolute money for them tonight. Good on five of five FGs - actually he was six for six - but the second last one didn't count. With no time left in the game, he put it through the uprights for the win. However, Mike O'Shea had called for a timeout to make sure the clock had wound down - so Castillo had to do it all over again and he was dead through the uprights from 40 yards out - again. Rock on Blue Bombers.

The baseball season is over for me, I have no interest in who wins the World Series. So now it is back to watching the now waning CFL regular season. Good timing, I will get to see all the play-off games. My Riders are out but my number two team the Hamilton Ti-Cats are top of their division at the moment.

In the East:

Hamilton - 10 and 6 for 20 points
Redblacks - 9 and 6 for 18
Toronto - 9 and 7 for 18.............they got whupped last night by the Als
Montreal - 6 and 10 for 12

In the West:

Edmonton - 12 and 4 for 24 - they play my Riders today
Calgary - 12 and 4 for 24
BC - 6 and 10 for 12
Winnipeg - 5 and 11 for 10
Saskatchewan - 2 and 13 for 4 measly points.............sad.

Ottawa will be in Winnipeg to take on the Bombers. The Redblacks are a good news story for the CFL. In only their second year back in the league they have accomplished what other veteran teams have not - they are in the play-offs. 1992 was the last year that saw an team from Ottawa finish at .500. The success of the Ottawa Redblacks bodes very well for the league as they contemplate expansion.

40-year old Hank has had himself a year to remember. I blow hot and cold on Henry - just as he has at times on the field but he has been truly remarkable this year. Top of the league with 4735 passing yards - his nearest competitor is Trevor Harris of the Argos with 4144. Kudos Smilin' Hank.

Winnipeg is in a 3-way battle with the Als - who are in the cross-over position - and the Lions for the final spot in the Western play-offs. So far, the Winnipeg offense has failed to show up in the first couple of quarters only to bound right back in the final two - though not enough to win consistently. They need a win today to keep their chances alive.

Ottawa is locked into a play-off berth - a loss today would only affect their stats.

There is a second game in the CFL today and it takes place in Mosaic stadium where my Riders will take on the Eskimos.

Here's what's up with my Riders.......

Eskimos provide tough test for Roughriders

by Murray McCormick

REGINA — Some thoughts, musings and notes before the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-13) play host to the Edmonton Eskimos (12-4) today at Mosaic Stadium:

NEXT-YEAR COUNTRY

Today’s contest marks the Riders’ final home game of the 2015 season because they close out the year with road games against the Calgary Stampeders (Oct. 31) and Montreal Alouettes (Nov. 8). Both of the Riders’ wins this season have come at home. They beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37-19 on Sept. 6 and the Alouettes on 33-21 on Sept. 27. The Riders will be in tough to win their third home game of the season against the Eskimos, who lead the CFL in fewest points allowed (16.1 per game), yards (290.9), rushing yards (65.3), passing yards (243.9) and passing TDs (17)

HOME NOT SO SWEET

The Riders need a win to avoid their first two-victory season at home since 2001 when they were 2-7-0 en route to a 6-12-0 record under then-head coach Danny Barrett. The Riders have finished with two home wins eight times since 1952 when the CFL expanded to a 16-game schedule. There have been worse times. In 1959, the Riders were 0-8-0 at home while finishing with a 1-15-0 record.

YOUTH MOVEMENT

Linebacker Tyron Brackenridge and defensive tackle Tearrius George are both listed on the Riders’ 46-man roster for today’s game, but they are expected to be scratches. The veterans are being sat down to allow the Riders an opportunity to evaluate some prospects. Jake Doughty is to start at middle linebacker and rookie Jeff Knox Jr. at weakside linebacker. Macho Harris remains at strongside linebacker. Rookies Tim Agbaje and Rory Connop are to replace George.

CLARK UPDATE

Riders centre Dan Clark was placed on the one-game injured list on Friday after suffering a setback from the concussion that he suffered on Oct. 3 against the Lions. Clark suffered the setback after practising on Tuesday. Clark’s status for the remainder of the season is game to game. Corey Watman has replaced Clark.

Dawn of Adarius

Eskimos receiver Adarius Bowman is coming off 11 receptions for 198 yards and chipped in a touchdown in Edmonton’s win over the Lions. Heading into Week 16, Bowman was second in the CFL in receiving yards (1,084), third in catches (79) and tied for fifth in touchdowns (six). Bowman (6-foot-3) is a big target and is rolling with quarterback Mike Reilly. Bowman has also feasted on Saskatchewan’s defence. On July 31, he had nine receptions for 111 yards in Edmonton’s 3-5 win over the visiting Riders. Containing Bowman could help the Riders eke out their third win of the season.

............................and a take on the Eskimos

Life of Reilly

Edmonton’s six-game winning streak coincides with Reilly’s return from a knee injury that he suffered during Edmonton’s first game of the regular season. Reilly has completed 135 of 215 passes (62.8 per cent) for 1,508 yards, but has more interceptions (nine) than TDs (eight) over the six-game winning streak. Reilly adds another aspect to Edmonton’s offence. He has rushed for 216 yards on 43 carries with a TD.

In a rather dull first half that saw 6 TOs - 3 by each team - 3 happening in one single play, it wasn't until the 2nd Q at the 4:24 mark that RB newcomer William Powell found the end zone for the RBs and the first major of the game. Milo missed the convert and the RBs led 10 - 0 after having scored a FG early in the game.

The Hoovers once again struggled in the first two quarters but managed to break through with their first TD in the game just over 2 minutes later. Castillo hit the uprights on the convert attempt and they came away with only 6 points. A long ball on the kick-off gave them an extra point and the score was 10 - 7 for the RBs.

Castillo then connected on a 41-yard FG to tie the game but the RBs weren't finished yet. Hank found Chris Williams who got into the end zone for another 6 points just as the clock was winding down to :09 seconds - they missed on the 2-point convert and the half ended with the RBs up 16 - 10.

I heard, after the fact that lions played a great game last night, didn't see a minute of it,
I was watching hockey, and snoozing here and there, saw a few minutes of the montreal game,
so that proves they don't need me at all. lol

I loved watching burris when he was in Calgary, thought he was quite amazing,
lost touch with his game for awhile, now I'm back, he definitely has new
life this season.

Bombers came back in 2nd half getting a FG then a TD - their first of the game to trail the Redblacks by 3. They add another FG in the 4th to tie the game 20 - 20. Ottawa adds a point after a long ball to the end zone then Milo connected on a 46- yarder to give the Redblacks the lead once again.

Late in the 4th, Hank moved the Redblacks downfield to the goal line, kept the ball himself and leapt over bodies for the TD. Convert good and the Redblacks are up 27 - 20 and that would be the final tally.

With the win the Redblacks are in a tie for first place in the East with the Ti-Cats who they will play in their last two games of the season.

Winnipeg will need to win their remaining games and have both BC and Montreal lose theirs in order to win a play-off spot.

Even though I am an unabashed Hamilton Ti-Cat fan, I have to give full credit to the Ottawa Redblacks for their win yesterday. Under the helm of 40-year-old Smilin' Hank who set a new CFL record for most pass completions in a single season, the Redblacks beat the Cats 44 - 28. Hank had 28 completions and threw for 6 TDs. Greg Ellingson scored 3 TDs on the day and won Player of the Game. He was the fourth Redblack this season to go over a 1000 yards.

With the win, the Redblacks will be hosting the Eastern Final in two weeks. They will play the winner of the Eastern Semi-final between the Ti-Cats and Toronto to be held next week.

It was a remarkable season for the Redblacks who have brought new life to the fans in Ottawa giving them a winning team to cheer for this year. The only flaw remaining in what is a solid offensive and defensive team is the play of STs which have come up woefully short on many occasions.

With winter fast approaching, Ottawa fans donned red and black-checked jackets for the game yesterday giving them the look of a bunch of folks whose trip to the woods for a day of lumber-jacking was put on hold until after the game. I could not help but think - how very Canadian they looked.

In the second game of yesterday's double-header, the BC Lions played the Calgary Stampeders in a game that had no effect on the standings but had a few highlights for a couple of players. Both Jerome Messam who earned a good portion of his yardage while with my Riders, and Andrew Harris surpassed 1000 yards rushing on the year.

It was also the first game back for Travis Lulay who will be a free agent at the end of the season. Travis who lost his starting position to former back-up Jonathan Jennings completed 14 of 20 passes for 181 yards. Jennings will be in as pivot for the Lions next week. Rumors abound that it was the last game as a Lion for Travis.

The Stamps beat the Lions 28 - 7 remaining 2nd in the West after Edmonton. Both teams will meet again next week in the Western Semi-final.

Currently, my Riders are in Montreal playing the Als. They are down 24 to 21to the Als in the fourth quarter with less than 4 minutes to play.

Wonders just never cease, Brett Smith in the final minute of the 4th Q managed to get my Riders down the field for a chance to tie the game and Alex Crapigna came through for us on a 39-yard boot through the uprights. Almost forgot to mention the fumble recovery by John Chick which gave my guys the chance for the tie. And we are off to OT.

Riders get a TD but unable to convert for the 2 points. Then the Rider defenders went to work preventing the Al's from reaching the end zone and LO and Behold...................the Riders win their last game of the season. Nicely done guys. Really looking forward to next year.

In a well fought game by both teams, Justin Medlock with a boot through the uprights as the clock ran out, gave Hamilton the win and a berth to the Eastern final. Rock on Cats!!!!!!

35 - 9 at the end of the Western Semi-final with Calgary coming up the winner. Jonathan Jennings was taken out of the game with a suspected collar bone injury - Lulay did not fair well in his stead. The Stamps will meet the Esks for the Western final next week to decide who will go to Winnipeg for the Grey Cup and who will watch the game at home.

Once again Jerome Messam was a monster in the game and once again I found myself wondering why my Riders ever let him go. Sigh

I'll be cheering for the Cats all the way though I have a niggling feeling that Hank has other plans in store for Hamilton. Go Cats.

In the West, I'm going with the Esks and hoping that Mike and the guys can get the job done against Bo and the boys.
