An explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright east of Edmonton have resulted in an unknown number of fatalities and injuries, Federal Defence Minister David McGuinty says.

“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” McGuinty said during a late-night news conference in Ottawa.
The minister would not confirm the exact number of fatalities, saying that it is still a “very active and delicate situation.”
At least seven people are dead and dozens more left injured from an explosion and fire at the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, according to multiple military sources.

The explosion was caused by a live-fire training exercise hitting a gas line or gas well on the base around 4 p.m. MT, multiple Canadian Armed Forces sources told Global News.
Military medics were seen being briefed at the emergency department of the hospital in Wainwright, where dozens of ambulances also converged to treat and transport patients.

More than a dozen CAF personnel were also parachuted into Wainwright late Saturday night, arriving at the health centre to respond to the explosion and fire.

While the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed there were fatalities and injuries, an update Sunday morning said the situation continues to evolve and the full extent of the impact remains under assessment.

One FB post the wife read last night claimed 150 dead and made it sound more like an attack. I read something similar without numbers.

Between hearing about this late yesterday and now I had heard earlier that there was seven dead and between 100 & 150 other others that were injured. Who knows though?

A massive fire killed and injured multiple people at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in eastern Alberta late Saturday afternoon, forcing the country’s military to scramble assets to support local authorities responding to the medical crisis. Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed at a press conference in Ottawa Saturday that a fire on the base was fanned by high winds and had spread beyond the military installation, but could not confirm how many had died.

I’ve also heard on the radio that Wayne Wright had wind gusts in excessive 100km/h yesterday. This morning few details were available about what had happened at the camp known for its large training exercises. RCMP spokesperson Corp. Gina Slaney said she had been authorized to speak on behalf of the Canadian Forces to confirm that a fire was reported at the base around 4 p.m., and that it had extended beyond the boundaries of the training area, and that’s about it so far.
