Census Day

On May 16th, we have to count ourselves in..or you can go online and fill out the forms there. This time I received the easy,short form and just finished filing it last night online. As I have the time to spare, I was sort of hoping to get the really nosey Census forms :lol:

I just ran across this on another forum..... anyone else heard about this?

This site claims that Stats Canada has outsourced the info gathering software and data processing equipment to Lockheed Martin.....

the poster I nabbed this link from also states that much of the info asked for on the census is not legally required to be answered... That we are only legally obligated to answer how many people live in the household, and whether or not agriculture is the main source of income for the household.

The guys also sez the rest of the info asked for is used for marketing purposes, profiling etc...

is there any truth to what this site is suggesting?

We got ours a few days ago. Just the basic questions (number of people in the household, languages, agriculture...). It took my mom about five minutes to fill out and we mailed it on the same day.

There may or may not be truth to the suggestions but having worked for an U.S. company's Canadian division, I know they transferred all collected information on employees and business dealings South of the border to their U.S. counterpart. I suspect this practice is standard across all Canadian subsidiaries/divisions whether they are seperate legal entities on paper or not.

Since it's illegal to take a pass on the census, I don't believe posting publicly your intention to take a pass on it is a good idea if that is indeed your intention.

Zan, DB did a great post on April 6 in Canadian Politics about the use of Lockheed for the census. Thank you so much DB, I used all of your suggestions. I was just sad that I got the short post and so wasn't able to make more of a mess than I did!!!!!!!

There is much debate about weather to cooperate with the census or not, it doe's provide much usefull information which incidentally has countered much of the freemarket nosence and the conservative propaganda of the past, but some are still concerned that the information will be supplied to Uncle Sam while others contend that it won't, I just don't trust our government of the day or the last one, I know that the police and the military have become very integrated with the States and I assume that most other government agencys in Canada have as well. There has been a lot of cooperation with the states since 911, they're not our government anymore IMO.

darkbeaver, I don't have any serious concerns as to how the information from Census 2006 is going to be used — other than the aggregate information reported to the nation by Statistics Canada, the particular forms are not going to be released after having been completed until 2098 (whether for purposes of transmission to the United States of America, or otherwise).

Most of the info from the 1911 census is still in the process of being released..there are family I would like to get some info on from it. I just think the time before info is released should be shortened to 50 years.

On the census,

there will be a question about whether or not you want the information about your family, from this census, to be released 90 years down the road. If you leave the question blank, the info won't be released, and if your offspring are trying to put together a family tree, your information will have been lost to them.

My wife and I are into geneology and the census info, though it is at least 90 years old, is a valuable source.
