Maybe Quebecor is going to open a NAFTA can of worms that will cost both you and I a freakin' fortune beyond what CBC is costing us now?

Recently a big chunk of cash has gone into CBC and Sirius Satellite Radio. Satellite investment makes you king of the heap. Within a short time local AM/FM band stations with be goners. So if some tabloid with a bunch of hopped up peckerwoods goes poking into CBC's network plans for the future and the costs of that exposed, some primates will blow gaskests and it will be sold off for, bananas, moon pies and penny whistles.

If you want a NAFTA based attack and take over of national communications that will end up costing hundreds of billions possibly trillions keep cheering this **** on.

CanadaPost was attacked the same way. That cost us almost $100 Million or $3.30ish a head.

The CBC seems to have no issue with asking for Freedom of information. I don't really see why this is an issue unless they are fearful that how the public money they receive is not being spent in a responsible manner. I say its a plus for taxpayers.

True, but you can't frame this as "CBC = bad" because they actually had a legislative leg to stand on and they weren't the ones writing this ambiguous law. By contrast, no fully private organization has any partial protection from revealing certain kinds of information.

It's not as myopic as Quebecor and The Sun will have you believe.

I wonder if Quebecor utilizes the 20-25% Tax credit offered up the PQ Gov?

Tax credit overview The refundable Québec Tax Credit for Film Production Services (QPSTC) is jointly administered by the Société d
Québec).e développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and the ministère du Revenu du Québec (Revenu

The base of the tax credit applies to all-spend production costs, which corresponds to the total of the qualified

labour costs and the costs of qualified properties. The tax credit corresponds to 25% of the qualified

expenditures incurred by an eligible corporation for services provided in Québec for the making of an eligible

production. In addition, eligible expenditures that relate to computer-aided animation and special effects

including the shooting of scenes in front of a chroma-key for use in an eligible production give rise to an increase

in the rate of the tax credit. This increase corresponds to an additional rate of 20

% of the qualified labour cost

(broad notion).

Truce called in CBC dispute at Commons committee on Access to Information

OTTAWA - A truce of sorts has been called in a nasty spat between the CBC and a House of Commons committee.

The committee agreed today to return sealed documents to the public broadcaster rather than press ahead with a proposal by Conservative MPs to examine them.

The sealed documents are at the heart of legal tussle that pitted the CBC against Canada's information watchdog, Suzanne Legault.

The broadcaster has refused to release the documents after receiving 16 requests for them under the Access to Information Act, and Legault has gone to court twice to assert her right to review the CBC's decision by examining the documents.

On Wednesday, the Federal Court of Appeal sided with the information watchdog and CBC president Hubert Lacroix says the corporation will decide in the next couple of days about whether to appeal further to the Supreme Court of Canada.

In the meantime, Tory MP Dean Del Mastro — who has led the effort to review the sealed material — agreed today the documents can now be returned to the CBC, given legal developments.

CBC believes that it is above the law. It's about time that someone trimmed their sails. Nobody is asking for confidential informant information, what they want to know is: Are the leaders of the CBC deliberately slanting stories, covering up stories and showing bias in their reporting?

I suspect that the answer to all of those questions is a resounding YES!

It's obvious the PM's appointed Hubert Lacroix is holding firm for Uncle Steve and the Socialist spending into CBC.

CBC believes that it is above the law. It's about time that someone trimmed their sails.

How does CBC believe it is above the law?

The CBC actually has a legislative leg to stand on regarding documentary privacy, unlike these guys:

Tories keep ‘as many things secret as the CBC,’ watchdog says

Duff Conacher, the co-ordinator of Democracy Watch, points out that the Conservatives have failed to keep their campaign promise of 2006 to strengthen the Access to Information Act.

As part of their accountability package, Mr. Conacher points out the Tories would require all government and government-funded institutions to create records detailing all their actions and decisions, and to give the Information Commissioner the power to order the disclosure of any record, especially if it is in the public interest.

“The Conservatives broke their promises because they wanted to keep just as many things secret as the CBC does,” Mr. Conacher says in a letter to media on Friday.

The MPs on the committee are clearly divided along party lines with the Conservatives backing Quebecor in the fight and the opposition lining up behind the public broadcaster. On Thursday, after a court ruled the CBC was obliged to turn over internal files to the Information Commissioner, the Tories shifted their focus to overhauling the disclosure law in question.

The ethics committee actually took a stab at reforming the law some years back and, after long weeks of hearings, came up with “12 quick fixes” to the access-to-information regime. But, when the report was tabled, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson dismissed them saying the committee had not studied the government’s own proposals.

To which the committee replied: What government proposals?

The Conservatives had apparently tabled proposed reforms in 2006 but did not tell opposition MPs or the clerk of the committee.

More good and honest work from our current government.
