It bothers me that 18% presumably are for Sharia law. Find these people and send them home...

I eat vegan, so whether I want to or not, my food is halal by definition and so fully conformant to Shari'a. Terrible, innit. Maybe it's time to ban vegan dishes from restaurants?

According to one interpretation. But, even if you accepted that interpretation, what would that have to do with bank loans? If someone breaks the agreement, then it would go to normal Canadian courts, Shari'a or not, no?
One interpretation? Seriously...give me another interpretation?

What does your diet have to do with bank loans?

No more than it has to do with lapidation. If I loan you money at 0 interest, whetehr i call it halal or not, it is halal by definition, and thus fully conformant to Shari'a. So, if we ban Shari'a altogether, we'd be banning a lot of stuff, including vegan restaurants since they conform to Shari'a too whether they intend to or not.

no we're not, dumb a$$.

My point is that if you ban Shari'a banks just because you don't like anything Shari'a, then by the same token, immagine how many other things we could ban on the same grounds.

Now, if the issue is with the name Shari'a (i.e. as long as you don't call it Shari'a and just 0-interest or some other term that then it's all OK), then I guess we should ban the name halal from meat too, no?

And by the way, Jer, I'm not a donkey.

I'm still not sure why so many seem to have a problem with banks giving loans at 0% interest. I would be more inclined to buy a few things I want without saving up to buy them for cash. It might stimulate the economy if we all made more purchases.

A "Sharia" bank would not be giving 0% interest loans to anyone, and anyone that thinks they do is an idiot.

They get their profits from calling it something other than interest sure but it seems from some of the posts here that certain people have an issue with 0% loans. I happen to think they are a great idea and good for the entire economy...except for the shareholders in the banks.

So just like a regular bank! lol.

pretty much....but.......

My concern would be the circumvention of Canadian Law concerning interest rates. If they list the interest on a 10,000 loan as 0% over 2 years but charge 5,000 in "administration fees" then that translate out to over a 50% interest rate.

Like credit card companies do? Legalized loansharks are a caveat emptor in life anyway.

Depends on the term of the loan. If it is for 1 year then yes, the APR would be 50% but if that loan is over 10 years the APR drops to 5%
