Canadians in Latvia to keep calm and carry on in face of massive Russian military exercise

The Canadian military is taking a wait-and-see approach to a massive Russian military exercise scheduled to take place on the border of the Baltic states this summer — but the country it's being asked to protect is decidedly more nervous.

Defence officials in the United States said this week that they will pay close attention to the drills, which are expected to involve between 70,000 and 100,000 Russian troops equipped with tanks, armoured vehicles, aircraft and helicopters.

The exercise known as Zapad, or West, occurs every few years and Latvia's ambassador to Canada, Karlis Eihenbaums, says it is always a nerve-rattling time.

"The previous exercise was not very comfortable for us," he said in an interview. "We were always uncomfortable with these exercises because of the size. It's huge."

The fact Russian troops are practising to advance into the West is even more alarming.

"You cannot feel safe," Eihenbaums told CBC News.

The timing is particularly significant for Canadian troops and aircrew.

The Russian exercise will kick off just as the multinational, Canadian-led NATO battle group in Latvia is fully activated, and as a flight of CF-18s resume air-policing missions over the Baltic.

The first of 450 Canadian troops are expected to deploy to their base near Riga, Latvia, next month, and they will be joined over the summer by hundreds of other soldiers from Poland, Italy, Spain, Slovenia and Albania.

Eihenbaums said the NATO deployment, coming in the face of the Russian exercise, will make for a time of extraordinary tension.

Some of that strain, at least for Western military officials, also involves the expectation that Russia will upgrade its missile defences in Kaliningrad, a sliver of land tucked between Poland and Lithuania. Moscow is thought to be permanently upgrading its nuclear-capable Iskander ballistic missile systems, which are capable of hitting targets hundreds of kilometres away.

'Tripwire' battalions

The Liberal government agreed last summer to lead one of four NATO battalions that are being deployed in eastern Europe as a check against possible Russian expansionism.

The tiny Baltic countries are members of the Western military alliance and asked for the deterrence measures.

The battle groups have been referred to as "tripwires," much to the chagrin of the army, because in the event of a full-scale Russian military action, they would be quickly overwhelmed. In fact, the U.S. think-tank the Rand Corporation estimated in a 2016 report that the Baltic states could be overrun in as little 36 hours.

It is that kind of operation that Russian troops will be practising in September.

A spokesperson for the Department of National Defence, Col. Jay Janzen, said every sovereign nation "has the right to exercise its military forces and Zapad falls into that category."

He pointed out Canada will be conducting its own drill at the base in Wainwright, Alta. But exercise Maple Resolve involves just 7,000 troops.

Is there a threat?

Whether the Canadian military believes there's a threat from the manoeuvres on the Latvian border will depend on how Russian troops conduct themselves, said Janzen.

"If the purpose of the exercise is to prepare their troops, it is not a matter of concern to the Canadian Armed Forces," he said. "If they are close to the border and the intent is to send a message, that would be of concern."

The situation would be far less tense, Eihenbaums said, if Moscow invited NATO, or other international groups, to observe the exercise.

"What we would be happy to see is that our militaries would be able to monitor the situation," he said. "It would make this exercise more transparent, as it should be among neighbours if they are talking about mutual trust."

Other than more land mass what would the Russian's want in Latvia or Lithuania? Both have terrible economies and also they are in need of many social care programs. Wonderful people but this could add a big burden ion the Russian economy.

Hey guy-you are missing the point- Russians want more land- ALWAYS! In 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland, Stalin waited till the Polish Army was fully committed to fighting Germans and then Stalin grabbed the eastern half of Poland-pushed the Soviet border 300 miles west just before Nzis invaded Soviet Union and it probably saved Stalin! A few Nazi units claimed to have gotten close enough to Moscow to see the towers of the Kremlin-that 300 mile land grab saved the Soviets from losing their capitol!

And Putin is a typical Russian leader of the sort who can always find a way to squeeze a few rubles out of the poorest peasant! Besides, Putin stays in power partly by persuading Russians that we are threatening THEM!

Yes and it WAS LIE-BERALS in charge THEN TOO! In fact, the Cdns sent to Hong Kong were totally UNTRAINED- some had never even fired their rifles before! This was courtesy of LIE-beral Mackenzie King who met one on one with Adolf Hitler and came back here to tell us that Hitler "was a dour but basically good man bringing some much needed hope and discipline to the German people"! King went on to denounce Winston Churchill as a war monger and rabble rouser! And King remained utterly blind to the growing |jaopanese military threat!

The Cdn troops in Latvia are in much the same boat as those old guys in Hong Kong-STUPID LIE-BERALS BETTING NOBODY WILL ATTACK THEM! And if they do get attacked....oh well, so sorry, but they AIN'T LIE-beral voters anyway!

I think you may have missed the 50 or so UN peacekeeping missions Canada participated in.

What we need to understand is that Our idiot Boy Justin is doing everything he can-just like his wretched father- to PRETEND to stand with our allies. Justin and his vile father both conspire against "western Imperialism" with the intention of doing as much as possible to weaken us and limit our influence on the world stage! Our idiot Justin can barely find Latvia on a map much less break a sweat over its fate! Justin will sacrifice poorly equipped Cdns and then cry crocodile tears of sorrow over their "sacrifice! J|ustin has learned muchn from his father about hating us!

Consider: Poor LIE-berals, it is just SO HARD to dispute quotes taken directly from the writings and speeches of Pierre Trudeau when LIE-berals have nothing more than evasions, half truths and some badly discredited old security reports to work with!

LIE-beral apologists for hard line communist Pierre Trudeau miss No opportunity to muddy the waters and salvage what they can of the tattered reputation of their BADLY tarnished hero. One has only to google “Pierre Trudeau and WW2 and you get over 48,000 hits-including the J.J. Complete Guide to Canada reference AND the reference to the Ottawa Citizen review of the Max Nemni book that has done so much to discredit Trudeau! Or just google Pierre Trudeau and German army helmet and watch the thousands of hits role in.

Posts written long after the fact by EXCUSE SEEKING LIE-berals all speak of Trudeau as a youthful prankster engaged in silly hijinks or else they simply dismiss the dark side of the Trudeau personality as unfounded. Other posts-including the Ottawa Citizen newspaper review of the biography of Trudeau`s life-up to age 25, written by Max and Monique Nemni show a MUCH darker and MORE DANGEROUS side to Trudeau.

The Nemnis are long time friends of Pierre and even these long time friends have expressed shock and dismay at what they have found in the writings of Trudeau. As friends of Trudeau, the Nemnis were granted FULL access to the voluminous writings of Trudeau and they state. with PROOF AT HAND, that Trudeau was a Communist and a Nazi sympathizer!

As for memories of that Trudeau friend Roger Romand who claims to have been part of the `prank`; it is only natural to for such as him to dismiss and excuse the Nazi uniform `prank` as a one time silly event. Trudeau was a Stalinist hard line communist and when Stalin and Hitler signed the Non Aggression Pact in 1939, Trudeau automatically became a Nazi supporter-in support of Soviet `friends`. And Trudeau dismissed the British war against Hitler as British Imperialism. Of course once Hitler attacked Stalin, Trudeau turned his back on Nazis-and he NEVER spoke again of his old, strongly expressed anti Semitic views. As the Nemnis stated in the Ottawa Citizen interview; its odd that Trudeau did not (at some point later in life) destroy the damning evidence of his traitorous and discriminatory past.

As for Trudeau and communism; LIE-berals have long insisted there is no such proof; all the while IGNORING RCMP investigations into the revelations of Soviet defector Igor Gouzenko; along with the open admiration (expressed by Trudeau) of all things Chinese Communist. Trudeau positively gushes over Great Helmsman Chairman Mao in the Trudeau book “Two Innocents in Red China”. LIE-berals also ignore statements made in the Toronto Sun newspaper by people such as Lubor Zink and editor Peter Worthington.

Zink bases his assertions against Trudeau on statements made by Trudeau after returning to Canada from his trip to Red China shortly after Mao came to power. At the time Trudeau spoke warmly of his admiration of Mao and the Red Guards. Trudeau also stated that if he “became prime minister, he would take Canada from the past into the future via the route of radical socialism” but Trudeau later repudiated his statements-just claimed he never made them. Zink did his best to provoke Trudeau-daring him to sue for slander or libel but Trudeau ignored him-knowing that in an HONEST public forum, Zink would be vindicated.

And of course Zink was a Sun newspaper reporter and his columns (and the Sun chain) are now owned by Pierre-Karl Peladeau- who became leader of the Separatist Bloc Quebecois last year. And we can assume the Peladeau will not want to muddy the reputation of Trudeau-that favoured son of Quebec-so the Zink columns are hard to find now! This is the LIE-beral argument-hide, alter, delude, delay, dismiss and then delete where possible!

As for other proof of the Trudeau love of communism, we can turn to Igor Gouzenko. He was a Soviet cipher/coding clerk working at the Ottawa Soviet embassy. And one day in 1945, Gouzenko defected-walked into RCMP headquarters with his wife and baby and asked for asylum and in exchange he spilled his guts about a huge array of Soviet secrets.

Gouzenko had so much to say about national and international Soviet spy rings and their sympathizers that the RCMP needed help and called on British secret service for help. Britain sent a very senior man from MI-6-Kim Philby-to Ottawa to debrief Gouzenko. Philby also worked as liaison between MI-6 and the CIA and was able to supply the Soviets with a lot of Yankee secrets due to his contacts in Washington.

Philby debunked virtually all the secrets that Gouzenko reported. The RCMP reluctantly forgot about Gouzenko and his allegations. Kim Philby was later relieved of his MI-6 duties in 1951 and fired in 1956. Eventually the evidence piled up to the point that Philby was exposed as a TRAITOR and Soviet agent. Philby fled away to Moscow to avoid being hanged in Britain.

As a British spy master in the pay of Soviets, Philby had sent dozens of British and even some American agents working with Brits, to their deaths at Soviet hands. Once Philby was exposed as a traitor, RCMP revived interest in Gouzenko secrets but the damage was done-trust and cooperation between various secret services was destroyed. And many of those named by Gouzenko had moved on out of reach of RCMP. LIE-beral govts have not been anxious to reopen such a nasty can of traitorous worms. And Trudeau naturally had no intention of denouncing himself!

The Soviet Union has long recognized Canada as a quiet side door opening onto both British and American society. In the early days of the revolution Leon Trotsky was number 2 man in the Soviet Union. But by 1925 he had run afoul of Lavrenti Beria-the secret police chief. Trotsky fled to Mexico City and hid out. Beria sent Soviet hit men after Trotsky-and they traveled to Mexico on CANADIAN passports and murdered him there.

In 1944/45, Soviet penetration of Cdn security was so complete that Cdns leaked to Stalin the date of the D-Day landings in Normandy. They also supplied the Soviets with the formula for making an atomic bomb. Since then various Cdns in sensitive positions in the 1950/1960 period have been exposed as Soviet sympathizers and moles but LIE-beral attitudes have resulted in these scandals being hushed up with the help of Pierre Trudeau and his pals.

And it was Trudeau who created CSIS-the new CIVILIAN spy agency. Typical Trudeau misdirection-to create an agency that has HIS poisonous values stamped on it. As a civilian agency, CSIS is much less friendly with our military allies than RCMP security service.

As for the present generation of Trudeau`s-one has only to read the gag inducing love letter written by Sasha Trudeau to his Soviet pal Castro. Many Cdns enjoy holidaying in Cuba and the people there are friendly enough but it’s a dirty little secret that Castro has his own Gulag called “The Isle of Pines” Castro has as much blood on his hands as the other Soviet monsters of his times It is disturbing that Sasha would be so friendly to such a cruel dictator and just as bad that Sasha has ties/friendships with Muslims in Iran as well.

And our prime minister-the Boy with nice hair for Brains? He has stated his admiration for Communist China because he “likes the way they get things done”. Based on all the facts about the life and times of the Trudeau`s we can easily bet that one of the main attractions of Chinese style Communism is that the party writes the history-and if that was Cdn case then all this stuff about the Trudeau`s being dangerous communists would fade away and be forgotten!

And the Trudeau attitude to deficits and debt? Pierre Trudeau wanted to build a new society on the collapsed ruins of our old one. And Justin Trudeau appears to be following both the dream of his father and the words of the revolutionary Bakunin who said: “ for the revolution to succeed, it is not necessary for the people to support it, it is enough that the people no longer trust their existing institutions and become receptive to change”.

Justin Trudeau WANTS the country to go bankrupt because he sees opportunity-just as Bakunin and Lenin and Mao and Castro did-in chaos and uncertainty the quick and organized gain opportunity to impose their will over all others..

No, I contemplated volunteering for one, once.

That's not really the same thing as sending a piece of an infantry brigade into possibly having to oppose a mass invasion. That sort of situation did not come up in very many of those 50+ peace keeping missions.

Time to up Canada’s defence spending

Postmedia Network

First posted: Monday, April 17, 2017 05:53 PM EDT | Updated: Monday, April 17, 2017 05:58 PM EDT

The world is becoming a more dangerous place.

Yet Canada’s defence spending is on the decline.

This doesn’t add up and it has to change.

The Senate committee on national security and defence last week released an alarming report revealing our defence spending is lower as a percentage of GDP than it’s ever been.

Under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, we’re down to spending 0.88% of GDP.

The number's been declining ever since the 1960s, when it was 4%.

This is a problem because our commitment to NATO is that we’ll spend 2% on military matters.

Coincidentally, the Senate report came out the day after U.S. President Donald Trump walked back his past statements on NATO being obsolete and reiterated his calls for member countries to increase their military spending.

For a brief period, the world enjoyed calm in the post-Cold War era.

As the arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union drew to a close, it seemed the days of nuclear proliferation were behind us and liberal democracy would dominate the new world order.

That time was short-lived.

A little over a decade later, Osama bin Laden began planning for 9/11 and international terrorism kicked into high gear.

Meanwhile, countries like Iran and North Korea developed an appetite for nuclear weapons.

A new arms race, involving unstable regimes and even terrorist groups, has emerged.

Former U.S. president Barack Obama created a power vacuum in the geopolitical sphere when he failed in 2013 to enforce the “red line” he drew in Syria over its development and use of chemical weapons.

Trump is clearly barreling ahead to correct that mistake.

Recently, he dropped dozens of Tomahawk missiles in a targeted strike on a Syrian airfield.

And he dropped a MOAB (Mother of All Bombs), the largest non-nuclear weapon in the U.S. arsenal, on an ISIS fighting position in Afghanistan.

America is in fighting form again, ready to beat back the rising forces of evil in the world.

Canada will decide, case by case, which fights we will join the U.S. in prosecuting.

But if our defence spending continues to erode, we won’t be in shape to join any fight.

The time to increase our military spending is now.

Who will protect us from the Zionist filled Britian and USA?

Still, war with Russia would reduce Canadian unemployment. And the elderly could be employed on coastal defence installations which could be reburbished. Maybe the submarines could be upgrade to something. We must do all we can to preserve the third side fukking bankers.

3 men convicted in Swedish rape livestreamed on Facebook

COPENHAGEN - A Swedish court on Tuesday sentenced three men aged 18-24 for participating in a gang rape that was streamed live on a closed Facebook group.

The Uppsala District Court said one of the men was given a sentence of 27 months for rape and assistance to rape. The others were given respectively one year — which was halved because he was a minor at the time of the crime — and six months. Two of the men are Afghan citizens and the third is a Swedish citizen of Afghan descent.

(I ask HOW BRAZEN do you have to be to think you can broadcast a criminal event and simply assume nobody will ever find out? How stupid do you think cops and the public are?)

Judge Nils Palbrandt said the victim, a woman in her 30s, was under influence of narcotics and alcohol was not able to give her consent to the sexual act, as was claimed by the men. The men, too, were influenced by alcohol during the act.

(And all the rapist are foreign born- and hey- nice job there guys-showing what you really think of Swedish hospitality and generosity in letting you in! And clearly they have NO NEED to fear Swedish legal system as there is NO mention of any move to DEPORT the swine! If you come to my house and kick my dog and spit on my rug you will be put out- so WHY NOT respond the same way to those who spit on the country and its citizens?)

The court said the film had received a lot of attention both in Sweden and internationally.

During the four-day trial, the video was aired behind closed doors, according to court documents obtained by The Associated Press.

The men also were sentenced to pay total damages of 300,000 kronor ($33,890) to the victim.

(WE all know how that works-the guys cry poor and govt forgets about collecting! And what about court costs and such? Just how much did it cost Swedish tax payers to be charitable to RAPISTS?)

The three were arrested in January in Uppsala, north of Stockholm, after police received tips about the streaming and the rape and interrupted the broadcast.

Just how much weed did you smoke before you replied to the post dude? The three Muslims raped a woman and played it online for their friends!

The punishment does NOT fit the gross and in your face nature of the crime! Its bold as brass and a bare faced DARE to respond to a nearly mortal INSULT! Now go back to your Mosque and repeat one thousand times: "Allah favours the compassionate and merciful"!

Latvia and Lithuania are amongst the fastest-growing economies in the EU. The countries are so wealthy economically that, along with Estonia, they are collectively known as the Baltic Tiger. In 2006-07, the Latvian economy grew at 10%. In 2011, just after the financial crisis, its economy still managed 5.5% growth. Lithuania's economy grew 11.1% in 2007. GDP per capita in Lithuania is 70% above the world's average of $10,500. Lithuania is ranked 24th in the world in the Ease of Doing Business Index prepared by the World Bank Group and 15th out of 178 countries in the Index of Economic Freedom, measured by The Heritage Foundation.
