I notice a lot of popular "Canadian Forums" end in .net vs .com

I was wondering is there any specific reason for this..

Is it just that the owners were unable to acquire the .com or does .net signify more of a network of threads or forum..

Just ask'in..

If anyone has a reasonable answer, would be appreciated.

.com used to represent a commercial website.. like Ebay or Amazon.. .net was supposed to be for things like forums or exchanges of information.. .org for institutional sites.. .edu.. for education.. .gov for government... .mil for military. On top of which a country code... such as .xxx.ca.net was developed a little later.. to breakdown sites by country of origin.

but its all gotten screwed up .. the .com is used for just about everything now. In that sense Canadian Content is truer to the original plan of the internet.

I originally registered the .net version for reasons similar to what coldstream mentioned. This site has been around in some form since 1997, but the .ca version was purchased a few months before I decided to move this site to its own domain.

The .com version has been inhabited by squatters for as long as I can remember. I offered a modest amount to purchase the domain a while back but they insisted it would cost "a very high sum", so I just ignored it and went on my way.

I find .com is the more popular one just because it's been around the longest and most media refer to .com when they talk about the internet.

My three of four web sites are .com but my election one is .ca

LOL i remember when on the news they said some kids,got more than they thought,when they searched for NASA.COM.

Well the reason behind the question about the (dot)net extension was, I acquired CanadianEH.net and was considering creating a new Pro-Canadian Forum ..

Not to mention a line of T-Shirts, Hats and other novelties with Canadian EH!! on them..

I was looking at CanadaKA.net and the way people post news and it merges into a thread.. and CanadianContent.net, the Movie upload here.. love that feature.

Well right now it's just a thought, with a regular job, a few ongoing Internet web sites.. I don't think I have the time to babysit a forum.
