About Crystal. I usually read about her but I don't listen to her music. Someone on Top Idol made a good point comparing her to Adam and saying while both have great voices, they are both grating voices, to some people. Hers always was, to me. I don't like listening to someone when I find I'm clenching my teeth in discomfort at the way their voice hits me, while at the same time "appreciating" their voice. Unfortunately I have this reaction to her. As for Lee, I do kind of like him when he's on key (which he usually is, now, I guess), but his upper range is more or less unpleasant for me. I can't quite describe it but I don't like it. It's just not the way I want a human being to sound. People compare him to David Cook, which I think is wrong. I just sit back and listen to Cook with total amazement at his vocal power but also the beautiful smoothness that is always there, even though it's a "rough" voice. And the perfect pitch, usually. So I don't think that comparison is ever valid
Thanks for the Ads info. Makes sense that the promo is centered around that date.
Well, what it boils down to is similar (in a way) to when I worked at a radio station and did movie reviews. Basically when the studio sent out a lot of promotional materials, the film got reviewed. It's not like we ever went out and sought out films to review. We got big press packages from the studios or releasing organizations, and these would include pictures, interviews, posters, even merch, sometimes. And these would be what we'd concentrate on reviewing. It made our jobs easier because we knoew what the big films were likely to be, in advance, and we had a lot of materials at our diposal such as cast lists and credits. (Before the days of the internet, if you didn't get this stuff you sometimes had to sit through the credits trying to write down who did what. So I'm sure stuff that was not promo'ed was not reviewed, in many cases.)
Also, the studios have offices with screening rooms in the big cities - or sometimes films are screened in conference rooms at the film office etc. - and the critics get shown the movies the studios are interested in having the critics see.
So in other words the distributing arm is very interested in selling its product to the people who can make that product a hit.
In the case of music, this means radio stations, right? So apparently what the person on LittlePawns was saying is that if (let's say) Mix104.1 does not get such a package and other types of promo (which costs the label money) they will never play AWM.
Obviously, the label knows this and the only conclusion I can draw is that if they have no adds date or promo for AWM they don't give a crap about AWM. And if they don't, mainstream radio stations won't. VH1 won't, either. It won't get played, and so it won't be bought by many people, it won't chart very high, and it will be a flop.
Nonetheless, four other CBS sations (Mix 104.1 is a CBS station) are playing it and for all I know they may have gotten some promo, or some word they were to be test cases.
I think we think of radio stations as independent entities unaffiliated with record labels, but the HAC and Top 40 stations seem to be pretty much aligned with labels in that they basically play what the big labels want them to play, when they want them to play it. It seems very symbiotic, doesn't it? There's supposedly no payola, but I think it just takes different forms.
I loved that clip of Awm from the Grove.. people kept stopping to listen. And a 3rd single is always harder I think. Even Sleepwalker for Adam isn't getting played on CHUM. (at least not when I'm listening it isn't) I've only heard it on the new music challenge.. (where it won by 97% BTW - which the DJ's immediately discounted by saying the fan club got called out for that one) Those polls are a double edged sword. You want to win them, but.. eh.. especially for Idol peeps. Still I think it's better to win them than lose them, lol.
Sleepwalker is single #4, though, I think - but yeah, I'm sure third singles have difficulties but if they're not getting add dates that would be the main difficulty.
