Canadian Idol Fans Watching American Idol

Yeah, Hedley is playing Gatineau. I wonder if they'll have 70,000 people.

Canadian Idol is world famous thanks to that suspected terrorist. My friend in Cambodia just emailed me about it.

Back to Adam. Do you remember a poster on Top Idol reviewing one of Adam's shows in Canada a few weeks ago? If it was Quebec, I guess there are two of you (three. Her friend didn't like it, either).

I wrote something over there today about the audience at that Hampton Beach show. It's so weird to me that Adam is who Rolling Stone went out on a limb to claim was the only relevant performer of S8, and a significant part of his audience is old ladies leaning on walkers, and what VFTW call "the frauen." TI had posted some similar pictures of elderly people at another show of his, out west, before.

I just think it's ironic. I'm not mocking them, or anything. Just seems odd that this is the audience.

It's a really different audience than Kris is getting (though I'm sure he gets some of the middle-aged people. I'm one of them. Heh).

The crowd tonight at Maroon 5 - Kris - VV Brown, in Memphis:

Somebody posted this on Top Idol.

I saw a video of Kris where before he starts singing, a girl (I reeaaally hope it was a girl) told him she wanted to have his babies! He made a joke of it, asking if she really said that or if she said he has rabies. Then he tells her that either way she needs to stay far away from him.

He's quick.

LOL, that's funny about the babies/rabies!

That was a great crowd in Memphis!

So, the two girls in Québec didn't like Adam but they went to his show anyway? I didn't read the post on Top Idol.

David also gets a lot of that "older" audience. I don't really question it. They're the fans who got to know him (or Adam) on Idol, not the ones who discovered him on the radio or something. I mean, I get what you're saying about the irony of the situation, of course. But, they're selling tickets, right? I guess that's all that matters. In the case of David, I don't mind the really devoted older fans. Except when they both crush on him and act in a "mom" way. Both at the same time. I think I've mentionned it before, it's creepy.

I think the thing for me with Adam (not Cook) is just the "he's the only real rock star" of S8 that Rolling Stone kept harping on. I don't think they were thinking he would get the old-lady audience. I mean, that is something they need to explain to me.

Yes, selling tickets is what matters. Still, there's something else. Appealing to a wider audience is perhaps the most important thing. Maybe wider is the wrong word. Different might be better. At this point it's hard to tell who will build that kind of an audience. But I think there should be hints in place by now.

I don't know enough about Cook but it seems to me I've been reading a lot lately about his older-woman audience. Still, I don't know, there's something different about him. He has a certain respect outside Idol. He isn't my idea of a typical Idol.

Taylor had the Soul Patrol, Clay had the Claymates, Adam has the Glamberts, etc. I notice that Kris doesn't have any named group. I think that has to be a positive thing. Maybe. I think this Lifehouse tour is positive, also. It just seems like it enhances Kris's rep, somewhat, as a beleivable pop artist. I think it gives him a chance to connect to that elusive demographic that Idols are always hoping to connect with and rarely seem to.

Not that I want to play devil's advocate, but some could also say this about Adam too, no?

It's hard to tell how this will how play out. It's good to have a devoted fan base sometimes. And sometimes, it's good to have a wide fan base. As long as everyone enjoys the music, I don't really mind how it plays out. I do ask myself how Adam and David feel when they see how those older ladies in their audiences. Assuredly, before Idol, neither probably thought that this audience would be the main audience for their music. But I hope that they're happy with it. When you see all those struggling musicians, I hope that those that attract any kind of audience are happy with it. And I think Adam and David probably are, why wouldn't they? Well, they can't be happy with the crazies who run around hotel halls screaming their names, but who knows how old the girls who do that are.

As we've discussed before, I'm sure that Kris is positionning himself really well too. He maybe could use a fan base a little bit more devoted (or rather a bigger number of devoted fans), but I think he's in a really good position.

I'm sitting here realizing that if I had planned my vacation a little better I probably could have seen both Hedley on Friday and and Kris on Sunday. Though it would have been a hike to Gatineau, then back to Burlington, VT. (Since you mentioned devoted fans. Heh. I think I may be one.)

He maybe could use a fan base a little bit more devoted (or rather a bigger number of devoted fans), but I think he's in a really good position.

Maybe. I don't know. It sounds good, but sometimes I wonder if the *devoted* fans aren't the worst thing former Idols can have. At first it's good, but then it might actually keep them from expanding their number of fans and broadening their appeal. They'll always make a good living as long as the devotees keep buying tickets, but if after a few years they're still playing to the same crowd, they haven't really expanded the reach of their music.

I think sometimes the devoted fans (Adam's, possibly, for ex.) actually seem like a great thing, at first, but, because they're so posessive and entitled, they make a kind of wall around the performer that other people can't enter. Also, they're so crazy they drive people away. The Adam fans who attack Kris, for example. This will only hurt Adam and probably help Kris, in the long run. I think that already may be happening.

So it's really a fine line. How devoted is too devoted, and how many overly-devoted fans (vs. regular, normal, people who have a life, and just happen to love your music) does a star really need or want?

I'm playing devil's advocate a bit, myself, probably.

[I'm posting this pic here just because I like it. It's from tonight's performance.]

Hee! Yeah, when I was talking about devoted fans, I guess there are still several kinds of devoted fans! I wasn't talking about the crazies per se (the ones who drive people away, for example), well they were included, but I was also including in "devoted" the fans like us. Normal fans, but also people who follow every move of an artist's career. These types of fans are also the ones who are responsible for buying albums to their family/friends, trying to make people love the artist(s) in question, talking about them, tweeting about them, etc. So it can also be good!

What happened to my picture? Are you seeing it? I did, at first, now it's gone.

Anyhow, you are definitely right. I mean, earlier this year I was wondering if Kris had any fans like us. I now know he does, from what I've been reading, and I also think he's gaining more. I still think that while he's going to have more and more fans who love him and his music, they are going to be fairly laid back. That's something it took me a while to understand (which is weird, because it's so basic), but I'm sure it's just because he's laid back as well. Like attracts like.

I don't know if they're going to be fans who are good at street teaming and pushing the artist forward. They may not be. If they're guys then forget about it. lol. Maybe they will just go to his shows because he gets a rep for being entertaining. It seems like Kris's fans leave a lot up to Kris. Not only are we lazier than other fans but I think we're embarrassed at fan behavior and don't want to act like that. It's really up to him to bust his ass to be good, because he can't leave it up to us. lol

I think this may be a good time for an artist like Kris, since he seems to be someone who's good, live, and who loves to travel and to tour. Because folks are saying touring is where it's at in music, now. This is where the money is going to be. At least, from what I've seen, he can make a living at performing live.

I'll go see if I can find that picture. It wasn't that great, I just liked it.

I feel confident about Kris right now for some reason. I don't know what will happen when he starts touring with Lifehouse. Hopefully, more fans and more appreciation. I suppose you always have to brace yourself for the "saccarine abomination" type of review, or fan indifference.

300 Photos from Mixfest: MIXFest 2010 Photos Mix 104.1 Today's Best Variety
I only got up to 167 before I quit.

I just read this by Slezak about David C singing at the US Open. I'm sure you know about it already. It was interesting to me to read comments on another Idol, since DC's are all positive.* And there are no Archie fans saying Archie should have won. Pleasant, isn't it?

*Except for one about his hair.

There are a lot of covers of The Truth on YouTube. Never realized what a hard song it is. Kris makes it seem fairly easy.

Why American Idol is so weird to me sometimes:

From MJ's blog: If you ever wondered if Blake Lewis is a vegetarian? Well, here’s your answer! He most certainly is not, as he bags a buck in Texas on this week’s Goin’ Country with Kristy Lee Cook!
Blake, who had never been hunting before, expertly takes down a nice sized deer, and it’s high-fives all around! Whoo hoo!
In the next segment, Kristy Lee sings a little ditty, while Blake beat-boxes along. Eventually, Kristy Lee takes down her own deer, and the day is a complete success!

Yes, it is. There was quite a fanwar around the time their albums came out, but the fans made peace not long after that.

And yes, I was aware about David singing at the US Open!

That's a classic. There are always negative comments about his hair somehow. Even now that it looks probably better than ever, since he finally got rid of that "comb-forward". Oh, well. All the comments about David's hair make me laugh.

Kristy's hunging show? Not for me. At least, she makes a living doing something, right?

Ha, that's really true. It's funny that Kris escaped the fan names (for the most part)

So on Saturday morning I got a ticket to Kris and Lifehouse. I'm kind of annoyed because, due to their confusing seating chart, I rejected a good ticket (10th row) and took the next one (15th row).

Thanks!

Dumb seating chart. Stupid of me not to take the first seat they offered, though. It's usually the best they've got. :banghead:

There were some great tweets from tonight's (Pittsburgh) show.

Look who's playing the night before Kris.

The Champlain Valley Expo

I'm glad I checked this out - I thought I was supposed to see Kris and Keith on Sunday. Yikes.

I don't know why but I missed this originally. I guess a few people like Kris. And David.

Yeah, David's hair looks better now. But of course some people won't like it.

Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox return home for 'Idol' shows - Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors, & Information

What is with Brian Mansfield, anyway? If there's a snarky comment about Kris he'll find and print it, it seems.

Mix104.1 says it's no secret they love Kris.

I need to request The Truth - haven't for a long time.

There's a picture of Hedley on the Kiss108 Boston website. Hedley! I guess that means Perfect will play on the station? I can't believe it.

Weird. I wish Jive would push Kris and The Truth as hard.

"Perfect" is in the Top 50 on US HAC, acc. to Kristen on mj's blog. (But TT is #17, after all.)

So I emailed a request for The Truth and also said I like LLWD, and I got back the following email from the programming guy at Mix:

Kris is one of our favorite artists. We're playing both songs, and were thrilled to
have this potential future superstar on the bill at Mixfest this year.

Wow that's really cool. You know when I looked at those 300 photos that the mix posted -- there's a hell of a lot of Kris. And those photos of Kris surrounded by fans, signing for them all -- they are awesome.

Hedley on the Boston station - ha that must seem so weird! :) It's hard to turn the dial and miss them here, so it's nice to see them get airplay in the US - I think their album is only released in October, so by the time they release their album they've already got 3 videos out.

As much as I love the Truth, I want them to release AWM.. with a video.. like now. :) Which they won't.

Did you guys hear the interview today with Alexis Grace's radio station? Kris mentioned recording and writing on his (3 week) break which was new to me. 3 weeks off Kris, whatever will you do with yourself?

Kris Allen dropped by to chat with us!

Kris was the duck master. LMAO

Like I said, I don't know where they all came from or how they knew he was coming out (it was during the concert). Some kids spotted him onstage watching Switchfoot (in fact some were yelling "Kris!" from the side of the stage - younger kids. Kind of annoying). Then when he came offstage it's like a lot of people must have texted each other, or something, because they all showed up at once. I think then he felt he should come out and sign.

Did you guys hear the interview today with Alexis Grace's radio station?

No. Can I find it somewhere? What do you mean, does she have a radio show? (Why? I thought she was a singer.)

Kris mentioned recording and writing on his (3 week) break which was new to me. 3 weeks off Kris, whatever will you do with yourself?

Never mind him. What will I do with myself without his concerts to follow?

ETA: Oh, you linked to the radio interview. I just listened to it.

"Potential future superstar" - that's pretty bad English, isn't it? Anyhow, I couldn't believe when I got that reply back. I thought I was going to get some "Stop bothering us" email, or something. Wasn't that a great thing he said?

You should see a picture of Hedley pop up here. KISS 108 - Boston's #1 Hit Music Station! ("New Music Monday.")

I'll probably go and post something on TWoP about this for Miracle Max.

It links to this page where you can play the song.
