I think it's okay for some bands to do one or two radio friendly songs as long as they don't make it the whole album. They need radio play.
I can't really reply now as I have to go to work soon. I really don't like Katy Perry's voice. I often turn the radio off in disgust halfway through her songs. I think she had a gimmicky first hit. Someone like that would have been a one-hit wonder, a while ago, but now you can build a career on it. If the person can't sing, what are we listening to? But, to each his/her own.
I don't mind poppy stuff. I love Faber Drive, as you know. What was funny about them is that they suddenly weren't poppy
enough, and had to do a dance tune. I mean, they were so poppy already!
Their whole first album was pop. (Power pop? I don't know the terms.) Supposedly pop-punk, but, like Hedley, that's really in name only. They had about four hits off that album, but they decided to go with autotune/dance for their first single off this one. Now that's kind of a telling development. (In their defense, I think they just really like dance music, also.)
I think you're right,
SleepinIn, that this is just a phase (although that's what everyone said about rap).
I'm probably more of a fan of Cook as a singer, as he is a truly awesome singer, than I'm a fan of his music. But I'm not typical. I like stuff that's a bit arty, also. Anyhow, in a way, I want him to play stadiums, but I want him to be able to do the music he likes.
I have to stop now...
PS. I would like to hear a duet between Cook and Allison. To me, he's a much better fit with her than Adam has been. Kris and Allison worked well together, but I just can hear David and her together, somehow.
