I'm kind of confused how new artists without any money (which is most artists when the do their first videos/tours) can afford to pay for anything. Like, Jacob and Hedley, back in 2006. They did a video for On My Own and went on tour. But where did the money come from? He was a 20 year old carpenter's apprentice. I guess that's why I assumed the record company financed certain things.
It's confusing for sure. It depends on their contract of course, but typically record companies will front artists money for tours, videos etc. But ultimately it comes out of their pockets - somehow. I think Matt Good talked about it lately on a podcast - maybe on Explore the Music. Where he said that when his band broke up he was in debt to the record company for about a million dollars.
