Aww, I talked about Kris on the first page.

I also liked the way-too-brief auditions of Kris Allen and Felicia Barton that were included in a montage.

It's fun to read again, a year later!

Hee! Danny was my first favourite.

Wow, you guys. Seriously? I remember missaddicted liked him but I didn't remember you did, SleepinIn. I think I occasionally admitted he had a great voice, but he never really turned me on, maybe one or two songs. It wasn't song selection, either. I'm not a fan of the gravelly-voiced. As a rule. I mean, his song selection sucked from the start, but basically he wasn't my type of singer. Still, he won a few nights, back there.

You know, I got thrown off TWoP for defending him. I was surprised by the immediate hatred of Danny there. I mean, shocked. It made no sense, and seemed to have to do with his Christian background. People seemed to have hidden agendas for hating him. It wasn't the wife thing, even though that's what they mocked. I have never really felt the same about forums since then. I believe in giving everybody a fair chance. I don't understand instant rejection of people.

ETA: Later on I had my own reasons for not liking him, but I had reasons. Different.

A post of mine from page 4:

I was left mostly cold by Adam, though I can admit he can do amazing technical things with his voice. Just not sure I enjoy hearing those things. I don't like Axl Rose, either. He got the pimp spot, the camerawork, most of the make-up, and all the praise, plus he's nice, and he loves his mom. I guess we'll be seeing him for a while. He can entertain. I think he has a thin/shrill vocal quality that could grate, though.

I liked Jesse's Bette Davis Eyes, I don't care if it's not current or hip, I loved her singing. I didn't watch her, I was in the kitchen and listening; a lot of the criticism I've read is about her presentation, but vocally I was impressed.

Also liked Mishavonna's voice. Didn't get the pimpiing of...Allison? 16 year old who sang Heart? I thought she was okay to start with but got mighty shrieky. And her conversational skills made me lol.

I liked Kris Allen the best, but then I liked him best going in, having checked out some of his stuff on YouTube (thanks to you). Maybe a show like this is not the place for a real singer? I mean, a recording artist type with a bit of subtlety. He's an awesome singer! This show is insane for hiding him up until now. I voted for him, Jesse, and Mishavonna -- and one vote for Adam, just to see if the line would be jammed (it wasn't).

Nick annoys me, even though I almost laughed a couple of times. I was looking at the Gabbery thread and regis linked to Jacob's Space Oddity on CI2 as an example of how camp ought to be done. Funny because I though of Jacob when I was looking at Nick, and yet when I actually saw the clip I could not believe the basic difference. Jacob was trying to entertain, give a good performance, and sing well, while Nick gets his laughs by being a joke and making a mockery of everything. Not that AI isn't ripe to be made mockery of.

I never really saw the show before but it seems pretty close to jumping the shark, if I'm any judge!

I agreed with practically all your observations re the others. Disappointed in Kai, especially.

My replies were much shorter back then. :)

Danny got a raw deal from the internet. American Idol's world can be very unforgiving and cruel.

Holy cow, David Archuleta just uploaded a vlog to youtube and it's already got 254 ratings. He even commented that you have to watch the video before you rate it. No wonder he's kicking some butt in the polls.. Boys got some fans of his own.

ETA: I wanted Jesse to get in. :(

Looking around, the reaction to Kris making the top 12 is pretty good. Some are pissed, but most are happily surprised. It's a better reaction than the one Michael Sarver got last week I think. Also, it's good that he still has room to improve and to "grow" as cliché as that sounds. He might end up being interesting underdog... or so I wish!

Underdog! Do you work for this show? You're amazing.

My replies were much shorter back then.

Haha. True. Short, long...I like them any way you do them. :)

Yeah, Danny got a raw deal from the internet. And as soon as he was out of the picture, Kris got a raw deal. Sensing any pattern, here? Like, anyone who poses a threat to Adam must be destroyed?

I'm looking at iTunes. Kris's album is #23 on pop, but it's not even in the Top 100 on the overall chart.

Well, goodnight, friends, nice chatting with you. See you soon!

Can you believe that we were sometimes spending days without posting anything! LOL!

Aw, I just read my reaction to Kris making the top 12 (13). I remember just coming home, turning on the TV, and seeing Kris singing his reprise. It's funny, I wanted to watch the show from the beginning, but my DVR was already recording two things (AI and Lost I guess!), so I couldn't turn on the TV on another channel than these two and it turned on on AI, where Kris the underdog had just made it.

I wish I find somebody to root for this season. I don't think I'll be able to watch the judges and the old-fashioned themes without having somebody to root for among all the craziness!

Kris is DJ-ing on this station next week on Sunday morning. The show just ended (at @noon), so it must start early. In Utah it must start really early. (I found this on the blog. It's a Utah station.)

I remember that! How you missed part of the show. I too hope I find someone to root for.

ITA. The judges!! I don't know what we can do about them. Don't forget, it's at least going to be an interesting season with Ellen on it. I think she'll try to take her job seriously. Which is a funny thing to say about a comedienne. At least I hope she will.

The theme nights were uninteresting last year, for sure. CI themes are sometimes more interesting (but sometimes just as bad as AI). I enjoyed the Canadian-based themes of CI the most, I think. It gave me a slight knowledge of Canadian music I never would have had otherwise.

Like you, I'm not very into girl/woman singers. For some reason I've never really sat down and tried to figure out, I do like woman singers of the past a lot. I still tend to like woman jazz singers of today, like Diana Krall or Rebecca Parris (a local girl, actually). Suposedly there are some jazz types this year on AI.

YouTube - Rebecca Parris Sings "All My Tomorrows"

I saw Rosemary Clooney in person a few years ago, before she died. She's the kind of singer I like, from that era. Also, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, and a lot of others. I like the pure, straightforward interpretations, and the great voices. But there's also a lot of emotion and personality. I suppose growing up on my parents' records had a lot to do with my tastes.

I'd vote for any of these girls to win AI:

YouTube - Ella Fitzgerald - Pete Kelly's Blues

YouTube - Peggy Lee - He Needs Me & Sugar

YouTube - The man that got away - Judy Garland - "A star is born"

Thanks for the info about the radio station. Did you catch the show? He'll be there again next week?

We're not from the same generation, are we? LOL. Actually, it's not that I don't like female singers. It's just that, in general, the type of female singers I like don't do well (or the judges don't choose them) on AI. I think this year might be a little different. I hope so.

The type of female singers I like are more in the line of these:

YouTube - Blow Away

YouTube - Regina Spektor- Eet (Official Music Video)

YouTube - Florence +The Machine - Drumming Song

YouTube - Lisa Hannigan - I Don't Know

I guess Brooke White could have been a girl I would have liked on Idol, but she never really grabbed me. And her album is a bit too 70s music for my tastes.

ETA: I guess Megan might also have been a step in the good direction, you know, if she hadn't been so bad.

No! :) But the singers I'm talking about aren't from my generation, either! Since I'm not 85 years old! (Except for Rebecca Parris, above -- she's probably about ten years older than me, but roughly my era, I guess.)

I don't think it's probably generational, since some people in their 20's also listen to the stuff I just mentioned. Not many, just like not many in my generation. I don't know where I acquired the taste.

I was talking more about mainstream singers along the lines of Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce, anyhow. I wouldn't compare the singers you posted to Judy Garland. It's totally different. But I could compare Kelly to Judy and find Kelly a little plastic and generic, in comparison.

Do you like Ingrid Michaelson? Who I saw in Worcester? She has a nice voice. This video is actually on the VH1 couontdown, I think. It's also getting radio play here.
(ETA: "countdown." I hate typing!)

What they said is he'd be there next week, I thought. he wasn't there this week. There were two women (guest hosts). I missed who they were.

It's messed up. That was the Kardashian sisters. Kris is supposed to be this week (today), after all. Check out MJ's thread about Kris singing the NA for more deets.
Apparently you can hear it somewhere.

I just clicked on that Utah link again and they were playing LLWD. Ha.

Oh, I wasn't comparing the singers I like to Judy Garland. I was just saying that this is the type of female singers I like and that I could get behind on Idol. None of them are superstars, but they all have solid careers.

Admitedly, I don't listen really to older music. Whether it's the type of music you posted, or 70s rock or whatever. Pretty much all the music I listen to is current music, and I'd like to see Idol embrace that completely. Stop allowing them to sing Whitney and avoid all themes like disco, 80s music, and a theme where they sing songs by a has been mentor. Or maybe do it only once. I'm not really interested in seeing them perform Dolly Parton songs or Standards. Because it doesn't really tell me what kind of artists they are. I guess some are able to show you what kind of artists they are even with all the lame themes, like David and Kris, but mostly, it just makes them seem old-fashioned. Of course, I understand that making them perform more current music exposes them even more to comparisions, so I guess there has to be compromises made. Still, CI6 had a lot of current music, and I enjoyed that so much more.

I've never really listened to Ingrid. The Way I Am has been everywhere in the last few years (BTW, Amberly performed that on CI). I think she has a new song out and it's that song that's on the VH1 countdown. Her voice doesn't really grab me, but I haven't listened to a lot of her stuff.

Hard to believe isn't it? Oh, those innocent days.

Kris is DJ-ing on this station next week on Sunday morning.

So is that the same itunes thing? Or is that something different again?

Another cover - a little rockier. Kinda neat even if their voices aren't as good as Kris's.

Oh, I so love Music suggestion!! :) :)

Loved your suggestions so far. (youtube is the best thing ever)

Girl singers.. since I just saw Jann this week.. I need to say, Jann, Jann, Jann. Her music is so emotional - and just plain sad really. But her shows are hilarious. It's a really interesting contrast.

You go from this..
YouTube - Jann Arden "I Would Die For You" Edmonton Night 2 November 26 2009

Then she does a band introduction by showing their old pictures and giving commentary - hilarious.. almost peed my pants laughing (too much info?)

YouTube - Jann Arden's family photo show

Then she does Bonnie Tyler with the audience and the band does AC/DC... fun shows.

Other girl singers I'm liking lately

Kris and the DJ's are hilarious. He's not jumping on their college football bandwagon.

Kris is going to Haiti...

I missed it!

Kris is going to Haiti? That's so great of him. What else did he say? Tour?

So Kris is going to Haiti while Adam hangs on red carpets? One bazillion points for Kris.

I taped a bit of it, I'll see if I can edit it down. It was a really casual good interview like all his sports involved interviews are.

They were talking about football, Kris was not down with supporting any College team but the Razorbacks, but said he could safely cheer for the Saints.

The DJ's said Kris was chowing down on some spicey food, and Kris agreed said he loved spicey and gumbo and it was his type of food.

They asked him what he was doing next and he said that he was going to do something with the telethon last week but had the opportunity to actually go to Haiti to help after the game in New Orleans. And wanted to do that. Just to lend a hand.

They mentioned Adam and said Kris was his roomate, and that the two were different. Kris agreed but said they were really good friends anyway.

Thanks for the summary!

I really liked the Jann Arden and the Serena Ryder songs. I couldn't understand a word on the funny video of Jann you posted though! But, it did seem hilariously with all those old pictures.

Hee! Yes, I had the benefit of actually being there to know what she said for each picture - that video is hard to understand - that's about how far away I was though.

Seriously, she's hilarious. And has a great voice, her shows are great I'd recommend them to anyone.

This is what I got of the interview

Did I mention Kris mangles some French in the interview?
