At work...
Guess I should explain what I meant, SleepinIn, if you didn't watch the early episodes. The Top 36 had three groups of 12, and each group featured one (maybe more, I forget) person who had been prominently shown earlier either in a backstory piece or in other ways. Each week, when a particular group of 12 performed, the one who seemed to be The Chosen One, based on previous positive airtime, got the pimp spot. I think it was Danny, Group 1, Adam, Group 2, Lil, group 3. (People like Tatiana got a lot of airtime as well, but it wasn't necessarily positive or to make them look like a star.)
All three of those people who got the most airtime prior to performing and who got the pimp spot ended up getting the highest number of votes in their group.
Not surprisingly.
So it seemed very manipulated. (And a few weeks later, when Simon was on Leno and predicted the Top 3 would be Danny, Lil, and Adam, it was not a shock.) In each group of 12, three people were chosen to advance based on gender as well as vote count. The way they were chosen was: highest vote getter of either gender, second highest male vote getter, and second highest female vote getter. So in group 2, for ex., Adam was the highest vote getter, Kris was the second highest male, Allison was the second highest female. There's no way to know who was the actual runner up to Adam, but suppose it was Kris and not many votes separated them, originally -- it's not that much of a shock he ended up winning.
Anyhow, I thought Kris was excellent in that round and I wasn't sold on Adam that much (even though I liked him and thought he was mega-talented as a singer), so I remember I voted one time for Adam, 11 times for Kris, and a couple of times for a girl who didn't make it. I forget who.
