One thing about Crystal, anyhow. She's just herself.
I didn't think her actual singing was overly good tonight. But she was fascinating to watch. And she "presented" the song really well.
I know what you're saying, I think, about some of them. Or anyway, how I see it is...
Casey, or Lee (or Andrew, or Alex)...they are kind of like, "This is who I am. I can't play this game and still be me. I can only be myself, take it or leave it. It's all I've got." They seem to pay attention to the judges, to the mentors, then they go out and do exactly the same thing they did before. I think Lee is the one attempting to play the game a bit. I just don't think he's especially good at it.
But I think, being artists of a certain type, and not really actors, they're different from a lot of the contestants last year. Last year I talked a little about Kris's theatrical instincts, and people laughed at me (not here, elsewhere). But he does have an instict for the dramatic. That's what ANS (both versions) was all about, and Heartless, especially. Matt also was theatrical, or a showman (even more so on tour), and Allison, too. Also, Scott. They weren't blatantly theatrical people like Adam (who I felt was somewhat ridiculous), but this year they are much less theatrical, or entertainment oriented, in their approach. They're musicians but they aren't especially performers. That doesn't make them bad, but on Idol, it makes them dull. Actually it probably makes them dull anywhere.
