I kind of hated Jon Dore most of the time. LOL I did think he had his funny moments - most of which were when he was at the mansion and not standing in the audience.

Oops, I thought you linked to the Whitney review. I didn't really mind Whitney's review, I'd have rated the album higher, but a B - isn't really bad at all especially when you look at the other CD's reviewed I think the highest rated was a B+ (Heh, Paul McCartney). And if you read what she didn't like the most it was the wordiness of the songs. Which is one of the things I like the most.. so go figure. So reviews are subjective anyway.. although I probably would agree with the D for Katy Perry.. based soley on her EMA singing :)

Kris is going to be on Alexa Chung again on Tuesday - they're performing. :)
(annoyingly Kris seems to be following the Script everywhere.. they will be there Monday.. lmao) There is no escape from the Script. And to think I'd never heard of them before, lol.

I had trouble with the chat. I'm back now online. 11:51. Watching Conan.

You didnt mind Whitney's review? I don't know, I guess I would have preferred a better review. B- is not great. Not even a B? I think you're just seeing the glass half full. Optimist!

I was reading an old review of hers for disco night.

...............

Up next, Kris Allen, singing a deeply metaphorical song about "a woman" who "has a good work ethic." What can I say? It was brilliant. Vince Neil liked it. I’m pretty sure I caught a smile on Simon’s face as he sipped from his giant red cup. Kris got an immediate and almost complete standing O, the biggest of the night. I liked Paula’s controversial shopping analogy. Lil’s family did not clap for Kris. Anoop’s parents, on the other hand, applauded him and everyone else quite
heartily. I sort of love Anoop’s parents.

.............

We came back from commercial — so many Adam signs in the crowd! — and Mr. Lamberrrrrrr announced he’d be singing "If I Can’t Have You." Oh god, he’s gonna balladify it, I wrote in my notebook. He was wearing one of his "classy" outfits, and had broken out the "crooner" hair, and has now officially become as predictable as Law & Order because sure enough, after a blast of feedback, balladify it he did. Vince Neil liked the high note. When Randy said it was a "hot one," even Ry-Ry pumped his fist. I was bored to tears.

.............

Despite the fact that Shiny New Facial Hair Boy [Anoop] got almost no ovation from the house, I thought Simon was even wronger with this critique than he was with Matt’s: If that was Anoop’s worst performance to date, then I am Blanket, son of Michael Jackson, and it’s a pleasure to meet you.

.............

You really can't tell this stuff on the (live, but apparently still somehow manipulated) broadcast. I mean, Anoop got almost no ovation? And Kris got a standing ovation, the biggest of the night? Did you even know that? I had no idea.

There was this comment under the article:

Kris Allen got a standing O? Thanks for telling us Whitney. I don’t recall seeing that on TV. Kris was my favorite performance of the evening followed by Adam and Allison. Thanks for the inside info.

12:26. There's 9 more minutes left to the show. I hope this "Precious" chick stops talking soon. Oh, great, they're showing a film clip now. Um...Kris Allen? Hello?
Okay. He's on after the commercial.

I was excitedly(I don't actually think that's a word) watching the show!! lol.

I thought they were great!

HA! I noticed that too! lmao.

It was great to see him/them all clear and non-fuzzy for a change wasn't it?

and yes you caught me - I am an optimist by nature, but really I don't think that review was as negative as you thought. Plus she liked Alright With Me. I'm down with that.

I didn't mind it that much either. It was not completely positive, but not completely negative either. And she complimented his voice, which is nice. And it's just one person's opinion. I buy plenty of albums, but rarely read any reviews at all.

I loved seeing Kris again on my TV! Yay for the band! I thought he looked a bit nervous though, which would be totally understandable. He sounded a bit strained to me, I've heard him sing LLWD way better before. But, hey, it's Kris on my TV, so I'm not going to complain too much!

"On his post-Idol debut, the season 8 champion sniffs around a musical identity but never quite curls up in one."

"Allen gets himself stylistically lost somewhere between Fly White Guy Avenue (''Can't Stay Away'') and Bleeding Heart Boulevard (''The Truth''), while rarely visiting original territory."

"It falls to Allen's appealing pipes (that adorable little hitch in his voice!) to sew this patchwork of pop production-for-hire together, and they ultimately provide the album's strongest selling point."

"He's also got a tendency to overstuff the lyrics; even his most interesting tune, the handclappy ''Alright With Me,'' beats the word centers of the brain into submission."

"lack of originality suits Allen just fine on Heartless," (a song she thought was "awesome.")

Guys, I didn't find much to like here. Even what she was positive about, she was negative about. That's what annoyed me most, probably.

Something to be prepared for: most of the people who reviewed the Idols concert are the same people who are going to review the Idols' albums. Until I read that review by Howard Cohen (Miami Herald), this fact really hadn't occurred to me.

A couple of days ago on the blog someone was quoting tweets from a Chicago reviewer (who also reviewed the concert, and loved Adam) that were very poitive for Adam's CD. And apparently he didn't like Kris's CD as much. Or, very much.

The initial word has been so positive for Kris it would break my heart if all these assholes (you should pardon the expression) come out and either don't like his CD or else damn him with faint praise.

While good reviews are nice (and I still don't think that this review was bad) I'd personally rather read a review that is looking at the album critically rather one that says.. blah, blah, blah, I love it all, it's amazing, awesome fabulous, buy it.

So I look at that review and see that she thinks Heartless is awesome. She wants you to download Alright with Me. I'm actually okay with that. No one is going to love everything. Whitney's a fairly sarcastic tweeter/writer so if she says something is awesome or she likes it I tend to believe that it's because it's damn good. At the same time, if she doesn't like something, I don't care.. because I do. Weird I know.. but that's me.

I for instance if I was buying Kris's album by individual songs, would totally skip over Lifetime. Which for me is really meh. Kinda wondering how that one snuck on the album to tell the truth. But, the awesome-ness of Alright With Me, Bring It Back and I Need to Know, Let It Rain, Red Guitar, WAOMF, they make up for it. So yeah, in conclusion to my disertation, I don't mind critical reviews if they actually do look at the item in question in a fair an unbiased way in regards to their taste.

Well said!

I was just going to say that I don't really care about reviews in general. I'm fairly certain that they don't have that much influence over the buying public. A lot of critical darlings barely sell any CDs, while other who get terrible reviews sell a lot. And everything in between those two extremes. Some will love Kris's album, some will hate it, some will say it's so-so. I'm prepared for that and I actually don't really care. I love it, it's all I need to know.

I'm shocked! The French radio station that I usually listen to might start playing FYE. They announced they would play it in "the hot mix" (yes, that's a French radio station for you) which is their weekend dance music show. Still, that station never plays anything from the Idols (except I think Since U Been Gone, one or two Eva Avila songs, since she's from here, and one Hedley song). The two hosts who were on the air probably don't watch AI as they said that Adam had won, which made me "eye roll" in a major way. Anyway, I turned off the radio since too much dance music makes my head hurt.

Wow, Adam is getting a lot more love from Canada than Kris... from French radio no less. This annoys me more than the review to tell the truth, LOL. It's great for Adam..and I'm happy for him..I am but I want Kris!!.. *whine*

Although didn't Adam do Wicked in Toronto for awhile?

Yeah, I'm way more annoyed by that than by the review also. "My" radio station, Idol free territory, playing FYE? I don't want. I barely even listen to radio anymore, I might have to stop altogether.

I don't know about Adam in Toronto with Wicked, I've never read about that.

About Kris now. One Cook fan posted something about Chris Torres today:

I was just perusing everything you said as I missed watching the show last night. You can't imagine my surprise when the name Chris Torres came up. I was like...."Wait a minute....MY Chris Torres?" I frantically pulled up a youtube video and, sure enough....it is the very Chris Torres that I know!!
I can't tell you how excited I am about this job for him. Take it from me that Chris Torres is an awesome performer and I love the tunes that he writes. I have known him for awhile now. He performs mostly in San Diego and has stepped in to play bass for a band I know very well here in LA when they are in a pinch and in need of a bass player. The name of Chris' band in San Diego is The Grass Heat. They are a 3 man group and I absolutely love them. I don't get down to see them all that much lately as it is a 120 mile drive in traffic for us.
I'll have to message him and find out all about this. I am so pleased for him!!

That's really nice!

Aw, that is really nice about Chris. There were a few people tweeting last night to watch Ryland on Conan too. This is a big deal for these guys too. TV exposure is hard to get. When you think about it, they had their second performance together on the Tonight Show... how messed up is that? Usually bands play together a long time before gigs like that.

And some PCA Kris.. I've voted, lol.. and OMG it's like the twitter wall thing.. you can just vote and vote until your fingers turn blue. They don't even make you take a rest, It's on an endless loop. I don't know how much I'm going to help you Kris, you might be on your own here... but I want you to have votes so I'm voting.

If anyone wants to vote...

I love this interviewer. She is a total fan but still asks great questions... and keeps the camera rolling for other interviewers questions too. Awesome.

God, he sounds horrible!

Okay, now that is a negative review.

The only thing I have to add to both your observations is that I think reviews do matter for first albums. After that, if the person is popular, they probably don't matter as much.

I was in Newbury Comics today and coincidentally read something in Rolling Stone where someone from Newbury Comics was quoted as saying that preorders for Adam's CD are "through the roof". It occurred to me that RS is one of the reasons for that.

There were blurbs about Adam, Kris, and (I think?) Allison's uncoming CDs. RS said Adam is their all time favorite idol (*is shocked*), but that a preview of his CD didn't impress them much. (Those weren't the exact words.)

As for Kris, they said his CD is Gavid DeGraw-ish and mentioned another influence I forget now (maybe The Fray?). He was quoted as saying he didn't want to go outside his own 'box' too much. They called LLWD piano-driven.They said their prediction was his CD wouldn't sell as well as Adam but it would be popular "with the ladies." (Seriously.) I noticed they didn't say anything negative.

LOL. I can nuance it: Jim's performance was funny, only his singing was horrible!

RS said Adam is their all time favorite idol (*is shocked*), but that a preview of his CD didn't impress them much. (Those weren't the exact words.)

Well, they've been quoted as saying that Adam is a "rock star" and his CD is definitely NOT rock. Might not be what they expected. Though how anybody expected Adam to do a rock album is beyond me.

Wow at the album art, so pretty!!
