The best solution to this is a more accountable government, and that will only happen if there is enough media and public criticism of their actions and policy.

I wouldn't recommend privatization of science unless the profit of whichever sector actually coincides with the public good.

Most science is a private matter. In Canada it is about 47% privately funded (corporate) vs about 34% publicly funded. The remainder is funded by individuals and societies.

Speaking of excreta, I finished a study today on horizontal transmission of a gene for antibacteria resistance. Needed to literally squeeze the $hit out of fish for bacteriology, as well as take some organ samples for PCR. Euthanized first of course.
