This thread is for all those Canadians who go to work each day knowing that they are in a very dangerous job and may come home severely injured, or may not come home at all. These selfless people go to work to protect us and give us the luxurious lifestyles that we insist upon, and yet we rarely take time to thank them or even think of them. I propose we wear Rainbow Ribbons to show our support. It is the least we can do for these people. These are unsung heroes who die quietly remaining anonymous.......They fall into the ACID...

A = Accidental death in the workplace. (deaths/ 100,000 employed):
Logging workers 92.4 / 100,000
Pilots 92.4
Fishermen 86.4
Steel workers 47
Garbage collectors 43.2 (yes, apparently we are in such a hurry to get to work ourselves that we regularly run these guys over)
Farmers 37.5
Roofers 34.9
Electricians 27.6
Truck Drivers 27.6
Taxi Drivers 24.2
Others: Firemen, Policemen, Prostitutes....

C= Commuters of all types of work:

Approximately 2900 per year.

I= Immediate Striking Disease: These are illnesses acquired at
work with a short time frame till death:
- health care workers: SARS, Influenza, etc.
- Firemen- smoke inhalation

D= Delayed Disease: Work related, kills you early.
- firemen: increased cardiovascular disease, respiratory
disease, cancers of brain, colon, lung, pharynx
- waitresses/waiters: 4 times expected lung cancer rates,
2 -3 times expected rate of heart disease
- prostitutes: increased cervical cancer
- healthcare workers: disease acquired at work eg via
needlestick injuries- hepatitis, HIV, multidrug resistantTB
- workers in stressful jobs: alcoholism, drug dependancy, suicide.

This is only a small fraction of the consequences of these brave people struggling to provide you with a good lifestyle.

Let's Bring 'em Home
Bring 'em Home Alive and Safe
Wear your Rainbow Ribbon.

Yes indeed, DB, May we all be victims of time.

You may wear a rainbow ribbon for that, too.

PS Perhaps the government will grant me charity status to collect for sufferers of time....

RE: Canada's Unsung Heroe

I once went to a gay bar in Montreal with some friends to find out if it's really like in the movies. Yup, they are....
