Pharmacare won't be free for all Canadians, Bill Morneau says

Finance minister hints 'fiscally responsible' plan won't be universal

Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau says a new national pharmacare program will be "fiscally responsible" and designed to fill in gaps, not provide prescription drugs for Canadians already covered by existing plans.

Speaking at the Economic Club of Canada in Ottawa to kick off a post-budget sales job, Morneau said many Canadians are without coverage, including people who are self-employed. Some parts of the system are working well but others are not, he said.

"We need a strategy to deal with the fact not everyone has access, and we need to do it in a way that's responsible, that deals with the gaps, but doesn't throw out the system that we currently have," he said.

Eric Hoskins, Ontario's former Liberal health minister, will chair a council that will consult with stakeholders and make recommendations to government on how to proceed with a national plan.

Some unqualified idiot opened his yap and said Health Canada will start covering the cost of med weed come June which in hindsight left the door open for lawsuits and more whining than a jet engine from others wanting free Rx.

The "why do they get expensive drugs and not me" crap.

Finance Minister faces accusations of conflict-of interest over pharmacare

OTTAWA—Finance Minister Bill Morneau is again fending off accusations he is in a “perceived conflict of interest” on a politically sensitive file — the newly-promised national pharmacare program — because of his previous ties to Morneau Shepell, a pension and benefits consulting firm.
After first winning plaudits for Tuesday’s budget announcement that the Liberal government is looking to chart the next steps towards a national drug coverage program, Morneau dialed back expectations on Wednesday.
Despite commissioning former Ontario health minister Eric Hoskins to come up with recommendations, the government is looking towards a “strategy . . . that deals with the gaps and that doesn’t throw out the system we currently have,” said Morneau.
The Canadian Federation of Nurses, Canadian Doctors for Medicare and the Canadian Labour Congress wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau demanding Morneau be removed from the file

Both Morneau and Health Minister Ginette Pettipas Taylor insisted the government intends to “listen to experts.”
  What is this, comedy day from the Liberals? They haven't listened to any experts so far, I can't see them starting now. Especially since this has the double effect of not only being something to virtue signal about, but the potential to make Morneau even wealthier.
