Under the Patriot Act it is illegal for US companies not to share data with the US government if asked for it. It makes no difference if they collected that data in Canada or if the computer it is stored in is on this side of the border.

Given the Bush adminisration's penchant for making secret enemies lists that keep people off of planes and from crossing the border, giving your information to any company that has an American connection is not a good idea.

The Canadian government, knowing full well that is the case, hired Lockheed Martin to do the 2006 census.

Under the Patriot Act it is illegal for US companies not to share data with the US government if asked for it.

Legal? The US Feds have never concerned themselves with legal. Those in power justify what they do as more important than the law. Canadian authorities, both public and private, do too. Remember that Social Insurance Numbers were supposed to be private. Legal is just a small detail.

Legal? The US Feds have never concerned themselves with legal. Those in power justify what they do as more important than the law. Canadian authorities, both public and private, do too. Remember that Social Insurance Numbers were supposed to be private. Legal is just a small detail.

That's true, but companies and private groups could go to court before and keep the government from looking. That's not an option for them any more. If Lockheed Martin has to make a choice between sharing data they told us they wouldn't share or high-level people in the company going to jail, there isn't even a faint hope that our data will be protected.

What disturbs me is that the government is suggesting that the contracts will protect the private information of Canadian citizens.

This does not even recognize the heirarchy of judical priority.

That is what they're trying to sell us though, Scott. They have the technology to track all the data all the time and us it for everything from selling you toothpaste to restricting people's ability to travel. They want to use that data.
