Under the Patriot Act it is illegal for US companies not to share data with the US government if asked for it. It makes no difference if they collected that data in Canada or if the computer it is stored in is on this side of the border.
Given the Bush adminisration's penchant for making secret enemies lists that keep people off of planes and from crossing the border, giving your information to any company that has an American connection is not a good idea.
The Canadian government, knowing full well that is the case, hired Lockheed Martin to do the 2006 census.
