Globe and Mail Update

Ottawa — Canada needs to investigate allegations that it may be complicit in the torture of three of its own citizens in the Middle East, the United Nations Humans Rights Committee says.

In a report released Wednesday, the panel says ”it is concerned by allegations that Canada may have co-operated with agencies known to resort to torture with the aim of extracting information from individuals detained in foreign countries.”

If we cooperated with these agencies in any way, those responsible for the cooperation must stand trial. We can try them ourselves or ask the international courts to do it for us, but we need to follow the rule of law.

there has to be a way to have the the canadian government charged if the Canadian military turns a prisoner of war in Afghanistan over to the americans. I'm told that the american military has signed an agreement in regard to care and custody but who can trust americans. they sign a lot of treaties but don't abide by agreements.

ya just can't wait to bring others DOWN with you .......can ya?? sheesh. No wonder so many of the world's population consider the Us"ers stupid. and narrow/feeble in mind.

IF CA is complicit ........it better be held to account........NOT like the US assholes who think they can get away with anything. Who needs the bottom feeder "standards" (Lack of) of the US???

there ya go!.......I mean if Ca blew it, then it can bloody well ADMIT it's mistake and pay the price.......what ever the price might be. The last fecking thing we need here is the spin crap that goes on in the US where no one even knows when fecking end is up.......let alone what the real truth is.

If they gotta investigate this.......they better do a good and thorough job......so the truth is plain for all to see. Errors , when admitted can be corrected and then one moves forward.......not like to the south of us.......where lies simply compound more lies with more of the same. That kinda explains why americans are so dumbed down now.

..........Ca , like any other nation now......had better show wisdom and good judgement. .....before getting entangled with the psychopathic usa.

yeah. There is no bloody way that the federal government should be co-operating with the twisted schemes of Bush and co in the south. We can't let "security concerns" destroy our collective moral fibre. If we do that then the terrorists have won. It is there goal to paralyze people in fear and if we let people be tortured out of fear that they might be a terrorist then the terrorists have suceeded in their mission.

We need a full investigation and we need to send people to prison if they were complicit in any of this. If CSIS or the RCMP think they have a mandate to cooperate in torture, whether it's of innocent Canadians or actual terrorists, we need to make it clear that they have no such mandate. It's against Canadian law, and it's against international law.

You don't think Gordon Campbell would condone torture? What about Ralph Klein? Mike Harris?

It's better to have the feds torturing people, momsie. Makes it easier to track the pig-feckers down.

America has enough of its own trash to take out, I didn't post the article to point the finger at my Canadian neighbors, everyone on this forum knows how I feel about my government, I just know when your trash gets piled up so high, it eventually falls in you neighbors yard.and it's coming their way! so I wouldn't gloat to much

Rumsfeld Openly Admits Guantanamo Torture

When Donald Rumsfeld was asked about the force feeding of detainees at Guantanamo Bay recently, a brutal practice that involves inserting tubes as wide as fingers directly through stomachs and nostrils without any anesthetic as prisoners convulse and vomit blood, Rummy replied, "I'm not a doctor."

Rumsfeld didn't deny that this torture was taking place, he simply claimed ignorance of the exact nature of the procedure.

EU to Investigate Allegations of CIA Jails
BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union and the continent's top human rights group said Thursday they will investigate allegations the CIA set up secret jails in eastern Europe and elsewhere to interrogate terror suspects, and the Red Cross demanded access to any prisoners. More...

It's time to decide if torture is the U.S. way
If our lawmakers haven't been seriously questioning what U.S. policy is in regard to suspected terrorist detainees, they need to start doing so right now. A revelation by the Washington Post that the United States Central Intelligence Agency is operating a secret global internment network where detainees are being held without any oversight whatsoever should raise red flags in a country that claims to pride itself on humane treatment of prisoners.More...
