Ottawa to announce funding for ‘5G corridor’ in Ontario and Quebec

Ottawa is set to announce funding Monday for a network of test beds for 5G wireless technology in Ontario and Quebec.

The "5G corridor" is meant to build on existing co-operation between the two provinces as well as major tech players, The Globe and Mail has learned. The idea is to give startups and small businesses access to test environments across Eastern Canada running networks using precommercial 5G equipment.

The term 5G refers to the fifth generation of cellular network technology and some international wireless carriers are planning to deploy it as soon as later this year. The latest iteration of wireless technology will support much faster smartphone download speeds but it is also expected to enable innovations such as autonomous vehicles, smart cities and augmented-reality applications.

Navdeep Bains, the federal Minister of Innovation, is scheduled to hold a news conference with ministers from the Ontario and Quebec governments on Monday morning at 9:30.

The provinces have already been working together to support 5G research, saying in a joint statement in October, 2016, that they would invest in certain organizations aimed at developing the technology.

One of those groups, ENCQOR, is expected to be the beneficiary of funding in Monday's announcement, which will support the development of labs in Ontario and Quebec that will work together.

ENCQOR – which stands for the Evolution of Networked Services through a Corridor in Quebec and Ontario for Research and Innovation – is led by Ericsson Canada with participation from global tech companies Ciena Canada, CGI, IBM Canada and Thales Canada.

Canada's three national wireless carriers – Rogers Communications Inc., BCE Inc. and Telus Corp. – are running their own 5G tests and investing in improvements to their LTE (long-term evolution or 4G) networks. However, they are not expected to begin to deploy 5G technology for commercial use until at least 2020.

South Korea, Japan and China are racing to deploy 5G networks sooner and U.S. carriers Verizon and AT&T also have plans to roll it out sooner, focusing their early efforts on "fixed wireless" applications, which would offer a substitute for home broadband service. The 5G networks will use new types of spectrum, the radio waves used to carry cellular signals, and Canada's federal government is responsible for managing spectrum as a public resource.

Ottawa has launched several consultations and is expected to release a final framework for an auction in the 600-megahertz frequency band in the coming weeks. But the government has yet to release a comprehensive timeline for when it will make new spectrum bands available to operators.

5G will kill you...nice and slow
:)
Of course the liberals want to give THAT to the people.

Scientists And Doctors Demand Moratorium On 5G Warning Of Health Effects

Scientists And Doctors Demand Moratorium On 5G
Increased Radiation From Cell Towers Poses Potential Risks, Say Scientists From Around The World.
(Örebro, Sweden) Sept. 13, 2017

Over 180 scientists and doctors from 35 countries sent a declaration to officials of the European Commission today demanding a moratorium on the increase of cell antennas for planned 5G expansion. Concerns over health effects from higher radiation exposure include potential neurological impacts, infertility, and cancer.

In their letter to the European Commission, the scientists write,

“We, the undersigned, more than 180 scientists and doctors from 35 nations, recommend a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry.”

Yes and I quoted scientists, while you quote your mom...^
;)
that explains why you never turn out to be right.

Intelligence crawls in some family trees.

..are you sure you are not cliffy too?

5G Health Effects: Is This Wireless Technology Even Safe?

While the industry contends this is all safe, the preliminary results of a huge $25 million National Toxicology Program study released in 2016 suggest otherwise. Scientists found a link between cell phone radiation and cancer. Keep in mind researchers found the increased risk at radiation exposure levels similar to what’s deemed safe by the U.S. government.

In the rat study, the cell phone radiation raised levels of brain cancer and a rare heart tumor. Risk increased with higher radiation exposure. Of course, there’s still a lot of research to be done before we can definitely say cell phone radiation causes cancer. But should we be guinea pigs in the meantime?

I think Leeka Kheifets, PhD, an epidemiology professor at UCLA, said it best in the Los Angeles Times. (5)

For decades, Americans were told things like cigarette smoke, DDT, Monsanto and other pesticides were safe, when we now know they’re linked to cancer and other health problems. So are we going to do it again — on a massive scale — with wireless without even properly studying human health impacts. (Or considering possibly safer ways of doing things?)

(they studied rats...so you KNOW this will effect liberals badly too)

Yes, looks like you liberals hope to make big bucks selling medical weed to all the new cancer patients.

Ya bastids.

The Cell Phone–Cancer Link

The latest evidence suggesting wireless radiation poses a huge public health risk comes from partially released data from a large, $25 million well-designed U.S. National Toxicology Program study. Researchers found exposure to very high signal cell phone radiation led to a slightly increased risk of malignant gliomas in the brain and schwannomas of the heart in male rats. Schwannomas are tumors that form in the nerve sheath. (2)

Otis W. Brawley, MD, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, called this latest study “good science” and added:

The NTP report linking radiofrequency radiation (RFR) to two types of cancer marks a paradigm shift in our understanding of radiation and cancer risk. The findings are unexpected; we wouldn’t reasonably expect non-ionizing radiation to cause these tumors. This is a striking example of why serious study is so important in evaluating cancer risk. It’s interesting to note that early studies on the link between lung cancer and smoking had similar resistance, since theoretical arguments at the time suggested that there could not be a link.
(3)
The study found a dose-response effect. That means the higher the dose, the higher the risk. The results backed up previous research suggesting cell phone radiation could increase the risk of gliomas. Acoustic neuromas have also been linked to cell phone use.

You near away guys don't need cancer, it's too far to ship the weed.

There is something to that. But there are thousands of communities that have very poor internet right now that are far more in need of help than using taxpayer funds in an area that could finance their own new system.

Yeah, decent internet doesn't have to be the 5g surveillance network on a phone...

I have it here, but it's limited to the same top speed as the old internet by the provider.
So it's more about profit AND surveillance.

5G was a very controversial aspect some time ago but as of now, it is one of the most trending topics in the world. While not many countries have received 5G network even in 2020, I am sure they would do in some time. But they are ready with 5G smartphones to catch them as soon as they arrive. Even the major processor manufacturers like mediatek are offering chipsets as affordable as they can so that 5G could be accessible to one and all. Perhaps the myth that people were holding about 5G has now been proved wrong. It is perhaps not a dangerous aspect.

Mostly the same tinfoil hatters that were worried about smart meters. Everyone has one now and the aliens haven't plucked anyone from their bed yet.
