What has the issue to do with crushing recession or looming global war or rampant corporate crime? ZIP It's an issue for idiots. All Canadians might want to hide their faces after seeing the total waste of time and energy whineing about this stupidity. The conservatives will save us from face scarves. fu ckin heros

Has to do with leadership.... Someone that isn't so shallow and naive as to be easily diverted from the real issues and onto some ridiculous bait-and-switch from a person that wants to be a Canadian, but under her own rules

Tommie the Commie

You don't really know what a communist is, do you? I live in Alberta, and we have any number of colonies of them here. Quite successful, I might add.

Post Man?

He's still under qualified, but sure, give him a chance
When the floods came through Southern Alberta, Nenshi was the face on the front lines, passing on emergency services information and leading his city.

Harpo did a quick photo op fly-in and vanished. Guess he forgot his riding is in Calgary.

If you are referring to the Hutterites and/or Mennonites, they are highly successful, in large part due to their effective application of capitalist principles

He's a sniveling, lisping whiner that has done nothing but raise taxes and his own salary... Yeah, great, he uttered a few words in press releases extending heart-felt sympathies... Never once did I see him toting any sand bags or on the business end of a shovel... Just empty words

That said, the one thing he did accomplish was to have a libel/slander lawsuit filed against him by a well known and respected businessman.

Most folks I know are excited about the potential of the mayor getting schooled in real life by virtue of a 7 figure damages settlement

1. If you can't distinguish between a communist and a socialist-lite politician like Mulcair, then you're hardly qualified to comment, are you?

2. As mayor, Nenshi was on the front lines, but his primary role was to coordinate, organize and inform. Plenty of people available to fill sandbags, but he was the guy people focused on for leadership. When Harper was confronted by an actual emergency, he put his flunkies out front and hid in a closet. I'll take an actual leader over someone who isn't even willing to support his own constituents.

But, since you mention libel, you might want to reconsider all the name-calling you're doing here. First, it costs you credibility, and second, you're doing exactly the same thing you're accusing Nenshi of. There is something in the forum rules about 'personal attacks', after all.

1. You missed identifying that you had a point "1" and jumped into the second point... That said, let's not talk about qualifications, m'kay?

2. Never did see the mayor with a shovel in hand or hauling sand bags, only him uttering sympathies and encouragement in that annoying nasally voice of his.

3. Neshi is being held account for libel/slander... Me, I don't recall any name calling, but a direct observation of one of his annoying little characteristics.

4. Stop acting like a little panty-waist whiner

'Panty waist whiner'? Again an unsubstantiated 'opinion' based on absolutely nothing. You don't know me, and in a few short snippets of forum posting, you're presuming to make judgements on my character. Calling people names is silly and childish, and if only makes you look foolish. If you'd care to discuss character, ''Captain' Morgan, perhaps you should consider the character of someone who hides behind a pseudonym and who gives themselves an unearned title. Or did you just take your 'name' off the rum bottle in front of you?

But you were obviously watching a different TV station than I was. Perhaps Fox News? Your observations about the Calgary Mayor are contradicted by mine and, of the two, I'm sure you can guess which ones I trust.

I see a few comments here asking various contributers to offer rebuttal arguments, only to see responses of a similar degree of childishness. While I appreciate intelligent debate, most of the postings seem to be at the level of an eight-year old: "Justine" and "Tommie Commie" indeed! Where are moderators when you need them?

I see that the only "good" things you can come up for Nenshi is from the flood, and nothing recent. The reason for that would be because that is the last time the grinning idiot did anything for Calgary. Since then all he has managed to do is cast false aspirations against senior management and councillors by implying that there is a drug and alcohol problem amongst them and ok'ing "art" like the sewage transfer station with the light show on the side of the building.

Fair enough. None of us have any way of knowing whether there is in fact a culture of drugs and alcohol in city management, and we therefore can't really second-guess the courts.

But I think my points were correct, in that I believe the true test of a man is how he responds when the sh*t hits the fan. As we've seen, being a politician is, for too many people, just a matter of getting elected, then after that, the goal is solely to get re-elected. In the House of Commons, for example, most of the backbenchers just do what they're told, and are never heard from again until the next election. I only saw a few MPs on the news when the floods started, but when it came to actually telling people what they could do to help, I saw Nenshi stepping up and doing his duty as best he could. As I said, he became a focus for the people of Southern Alberta, and to my mind that was an important part of his job.

And I respect his response to Harper's fear-mongerimg over the niqab. As probably one of the more visible Muslims in Western Canada, Nenshi once again stepped froward and said what he felt had to be said. Whether you agree with his views or not, it took a lot of courage to stand up against the bigotry and demagoguery coming out of Ottawa. It may cost him votes in Calgary, but it shows the strength of his character. A week after, Don Iveson, mayor of Edmonton, said the same thing, but it was Nenshi who took the bull by the horns.

Thank you for your polite and considered response.

Like I said, when all you can come up with is what he did way back when the flooding happened, that's pretty sad.

As for the insinuations that he made concerning alcohol and drug abuse, there were no charges, courts weren't involved. As a matter of fact, he pretty much admitted that it was just unsubstantiated rumours that he made public. Is that what you would call responsible? Especially coming from the Mayor of a major Canadian city?

For his support of the niqab, what he did was reiterate the lie that it is a religious symbol, when it is not.

At this point in time, he is spending more time kissing left wing a$$ looking to pave his way into provincial or federal politics rather than concentrating on his job as Mayor.

Calgary's Mayor needs to get his head out of that dark hole and get with what the majority of people in Canada want. This IS supposed to be a democracy, isn't it?
If it is more important to a woman to cover her face than it is to be a Canadian citizen, then she doesn't deserve to be a Canadian citizen.
If this is a religious belief it doesn't fit with our 'open' society; there is nothing 'open' about covering your face!
Personally, I find it unnerving to be face to face with someone who's face I cannot see. What is being hidden? What is there to hide?
Cat burglars, special ops military and terrorists hide their faces. The rest of us need to make our identity plain and obvious.
