it would have stretched as far as france Jay, Britian was already allied to Russia, no Biggie jay....no biggie, and why should Europe continue to thank America for whatever they did 60 odd years ago?.
as i say, Communism wasnt inherently "bad", it's just the people who gained control, where as Capitalism is, it's just the few who arent

Jay, I understand, I understand that you may believe, thanks to Stalin and the overall corruption of the communist soviet blok that Communism is "inherently evil" unfortunatly...or rather fortunatly, that really isnt the case.
Communism, whether it's marxism, trotskism or centre-middle socialism, it's not, it really isnt...look at the National health systems in Russia, Cuba and the UK, people pay their taxes, nobody is blacklisted for not having insurance.
it lacks co-heision, it promotes government monopolys, but assures everyone a job.......dont get confused, it's only the people who run it that are usually evil, the idea of communism is sound.
it's just that being in a continent that deems communism as "evil" has clouded your judgement

I was looking at the form to apply for American citizenship, which my family may or may not pursue in 3 1/2 years or so, and there was a question asking if you had ever belonged to the communist party.

Is that not a valid, legal party in the US today? (http://www.cpusa.org/) How can belonging to it affect your application to become a citizen? I thought McCarthy was dead?

If american citizens can legally join the communist party, how can they say that potential citizens shouldn't have been? The question doesn't say Communist Party of East Germany, or Communist Party recruiter in Moscow, just 'Communist Party.'
