I live near Main St. and 49th Ave. My deck is covered with white ash which for the last 3 days I have swept at least once a day.

These peat bog fires can spontaneously ignite. Basically, the peat rots (composts) and the decomposing peat generate a fair amount of heat. It can smoulder for years, but as soon as you expose it to a bit of fresh air it ignites. It's the same priniciple that causes barn fires when you fill them full of wet hay (I once worked for a dairy farmer in Maple Ridge who just about burned his barn down this way). These fires are extremely difficult to put out.

Hi Cosmo, Hi peapod,

I have given up buying books because I go through the average novel in a couple hours or less. I have always been a fast reader and since I retired, I just don't spend money on new books. I haunt all the used book stores but my main read comes from the library.

Just a couple more things without hijacking the Burns Bog thread

The average paper back costs about ten dollars. That's a little expensive if I read it in two hours. Poetry is another thing altogether. If I like Mr. Lane's book, I will buy it.

Do any of you read science fiction?

I saw a story on the Burns Bog on the Passionate Eye last week. Looks beautiful! Do people visit the bog often? Any word on how much damage the fire caused?

It should be a crime to take a place like that and pave it over for development. Whats the chance of the province buying it from the private owners?
