I wasn't saying one way or another. I would however hazard that the majority would not want to pay any more for the gas than they're already accustomed to paying. How many bridges have collapsed in the past ten years? Compare that to new roadways and other construction which is where I think the majority of commuters would rather see the money spent.

Yep, but the commuters aren't the only ones voting.

Hi, horsefly!:p
You know...it was a tragic event and all that. We had that outrageous explosion in downtown Dallas just a few days before. But, I see in the paper that the paperwork on all the bridges in Texas is being reviewed. The worst bridges have been identified, and since we have more than any other state --- maybe this tragedy will call attention to much needed repairs and/or replacement. Let's hope so.

Why does it take a disaster to grease the wheels of regulation?

Uncle

I was listening on the NPR this morning someone saying there are something like 87,000 bridges in America - about a fifth of the total - that are "structurally deficient." That doesn't mean they're about to collapse, just that they're worn.

Minnesota spends more than most states on infrastructure.

Bridges in Minnesota are inspected every two years. Structurally deficient bridges are inspected every year. This one has been inspected every year since, if I recall correctly, 1990.
