I remember during a continent-wide power failure about a dozen years ago some American posters going on and on about the Canadian connection to the continental electrical grid and "...why are these foreigners allowed on OUR grid?..." They had no clue that it was for export, not import. These guys were convinced that we were TAKING something from them! Doesn't the whole world want to TAKE things from the USA?.

Quebec, alone, powers half of New England. Good luck finding a New Englander who knows that.

Umm we do buy power from the US at times. That is the nice thing about hydro power. Some nuke is putting out too much? Turn off the turbines and buy their excess dirt cheap.

Canada does not have a lot of leverage. Our one main customer, whom we sell 80% of our products to, can pretty well dictate the terms of most trade agreements.
.

The thing is, we mostly send the US raw resources their economy needs, including oil and gas, electricity, lumber, iron ore, etc. The US mostly sends us manufactured products, and nine MILLION American jobs depend on trade with Canada. This is not a matter of number one customer, since in this case we are each other's best customer. The US exports almost as much to Canada as it does to the entire European Union, and more than twice as much as it exports to China.

ANy renegotiation of NAFTA will have to include a satisfactory and permenant resolution to the Softwood Lumber Deal. THe question is does trudOWE have the balls to stand up for Canadians. THe Liberal track record on softwood isn't very good.

Northern Gateway is looking better every time THe Donald opens his mouth.

Trudeau like every other PM before him has his hands tied on this issue . If he takes the American spin it favors eastern interests , if he opposes American spin he favors British Columbian interests . The Gordian knot .
