New Zeland rocked by 6.9-magnitude earthquake

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has struck east of Seddon this evening.

Geonet reported a "severe" earthquake centered 20 kilometres east of Seddon, at a depth of 19km at 5.09pm.

Civil Defence says there is no risk of a tsunami.

The earthquake has been felt as far north as Auckland.

One News Political Editor Corin Dann says there has been some damage inside parliament with cracking on the walls and plaster falling off.

ONE News reporter Jessica McCarthy survived the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 and told onenews.co.nz that this evening's 6.9 magnitude quake "felt as bad as the Christchurch earthquake."

"It's scary.. there's not a lot of damage but it was terrifying."

There are also reports of power outages in parts of Wellington.

The 1700 west coast quake and resulting tsunami wiped out over 90% of the population. Interior Salish people traded with coastal tribes for oolichan oil but when they found most of the people had vanished, many migrated to the coast to form the Coastal Salish tribes that adapted parts of the coastal cultures from the remnant cultures. I had read that the quakes happened every 300 - 500 years and that we are over due.
