Good thing the top levels of your society are occupied by honorable, decent, intelligent folk dedicated to the betterment of the country!
Ah, the kid's quick and sharp, I knew you would be. Frankly I think there's no society whose top levels are wholly occupied by people like that. There are a few, but generally their ethics are such that they'd prefer not to get involved. Nobody who wants that kind of power should be trusted with it. But after visiting a dozen countries over the years I'd still rather be a Canadian than anything else I've seen up close. Especially Egyptian; gawd, what a dump that place is, and it's one of the better places in the Third World.

You have sussed out, I hope, that I'd rather be Canadian than American.

I suspected you're fond of us or you wouldn't be so active here, but really we're just like unarmed Americans with universal health care, you wouldn't otherwise notice much difference unless you look carefully. And I'm sure you would.

Really? That's interesting, how does a native American lawyer--at least I think you're a lawyer, I have a vague memory of you mentioning it once but my memory could be tricking me--in DC pick up French?
I'm from Oklahoma. Went to a boarding school. About the only interesting class they had was French (they sure as hell weren't going to teach us our own languages). In the Air Force, I was tested for language aptitude. I don't know what the scale was, but I had something like a 140, and the next-best guy was in double digits.

I picked up Japanese (spoken only) in Japan, German in West Berlin, and Spanish in a variety of places. Even knocked down a few phrases in Arabic.

I'm not bragging, it's not to my credit. Plenty of smarter people than me aren't very good with languages.

I will have you know that I am an International Space Lawyer. No shit. It's way, way, WAAAAY more tedious than it sounds, but it looks badass on a card. I also do energy law.

"To infinity. . . and beyond!"

I also finally retired about six months ago, but I'm thinking of doing some consulting. I'm waiting for the annual D.C. Satellite Show to shop around.

Good on you, I too retired not long ago, and I have to say it's the best job I've ever had. I was asked if I'd be interested in returning as a consultant (I was an IT manager), so l told them, $1500 a day plus expenses and a private office and my choice of computer hardware for home and office. Never heard from them. Which was the plan, by then I was close to burnout and heartily fed up with bureaucratic follies and all the morons who thought they were important. We'd been reorganized into paralysis and finally I was left with responsibilities but no budget or authority to do anything about them, they were pulled back to head office. Figured it was time to leave before I went postal on that dumb engineer in the next office.

Good on you, too.

Nice thing about being a retired lawyer with a specialization is you can drag down 800 an hour.
