MORE ASIAN BIRD FLU DEATHS
17.11.2005. 14:51:35

Indonesia has reported two more deaths from the H5N1 strain of bird flu, bringing the national total to seven.

A senior official from the ministry, Hariadi Wibisono, said the tests were from a 20-year-old woman who died last weekend and a 16-year-old girl who died last week.

Both victims died in Jakarta after contact with dead chickens.

"We received the test results this morning and both victims were positive for bird flu," Wibisono said.

He said that took total confirmed deaths to seven, with four positive cases where patients survived.

It comes as China confirmed its first human case of bird flu, saying the H5N1 virus may have killed up to three people and setting.

off alarm bells about a potential global pandemic that could kill millions of people.

At least one woman is confirmed to have died from H5N1, another woman is suspected of dying from the same strain while an infected boy has since recovered.

The health ministry said a 24-year-old woman in the eastern province of Anhui died of the bird flu on November 10 after falling ill on November 1.

Anhui has been the scene of two bird flu outbreaks in recent weeks.

"One to two weeks before she died, chickens and ducks raised by her family had died, and she had been in contact with the dead poultry," according to the health ministry.

Officials question U.S. bird flu preparations

A teaser:

WASHINGTON — U.S. state health officials are questioning how the nation would deal with the huge demand for a vaccine during a flu pandemic when it already has trouble vaccinating the public against the regular flu.

The administration invited state and homeland security officials to Washington on Monday to get their feedback on pandemic planning, and to announce that it would visit every state in the country over the next 120 days to reinforce the work.

The state officials noted that demand for a vaccine during a pandemic would soar far beyond what the nation experiences each winter with regular flu, yet throughout the country, doctors report an inability to get their hands on the vaccine.[/teaser]

Amazing how a country like America can not have enough flu vaccines on hand. Mind boggling. Do they spend all their money on the military instead?

B.C. farms declared free of bird flu

A teaser:

The federal food watchdog has lifted a quarantine on dozens of poultry farms in British Columbia's Fraser Valley, saying they are free of avian influenza.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency officials said Saturday that 21 days of testing turned up no sign of the disease on about 80 chicken and duck farms that had been quarantined.

The measure was originally imposed as a precaution after a low-pathogenic strain of the H5N2 virus was detected in November at a duck farm near Chilliwack and another near Abbotsford. [/end of teaser]

Well that is good news.
