Preaching restraint and reform, Premier Dalton McGuinty is warning that Ontario’s new minority government will have to do more with less.
“We’re living in times that call for greater restraint. Families have now begun to borrow less, pay down debt and be more careful than ever with their money,” McGuinty told 500 people in a speech at the Economic Club on Tuesday.
“So must government. These are serious times and we need a serious plan,” said the premier, who is struggling with a $16 billion budget deficit — $1 billion more than he had claimed on the eve of the Oct. 6 election that returned the Liberals to office with a minority.

Why do I get the feeling this will end up costing me more money in the end?

Oh yes, that's right, because it's McSquinty talking about budgets, restraint and cutbacks.

Knew there had to be a reason for the deja vu.

It could also mean they keep the public service levels and cut services,
be careful what one wishes for. I have seen it happen before where the
government cuts jobs and there is goodbye money handed out and the
world moves on. Unfortunately government is famous for cutting the
wrong people. In the end the middle group that was cut proves to be a
disaster. The new people or recent hirings in a department are paid less
and those with years of experience retire,(attrition). Those who are new
don't know how to do the job from a time saving point of view. Those at
the top of the service in many cases don't know how the (hands on ) job
works, because they designed it they didn't work it. Often the way its
done is not the way it was designed. Reason in principal it works in
reality it doesn't.
The other side of this is that, often the only way to get the departments
caught up is by having the retired people come back and work on a contract
to catch things up and get the system working again. In the meantime
people needing services are caught in the backlog and no one is happy
it cost twenty percent more and the government ends up buying a bigger
belt to tighten.
This happened in the Employment Services Branch back in the mid 90's
and it took nearly a decade and an entirely new approach to correct a
seemingly easy problem. I know because I had family involved in this. They
ended up making more money on contract than the did when they worked
there. So much for the belt tightening and the sacrifice. The only ones to
sacrifice are the poor folks who need a government service.

Not really surprised. It is because of McGuinty that we have to tighten our belts in the first place!
