Pre-paid Rip-off

When my faithful, old brick-sized Nokia died, I decided to purchase a new Audiovox flip-phone (mistake #1, see below) from Bell. I had been on a pre-paid plan for some time and paid 35 cents per minute during the day and 5 cents per minute in the evenings. I mostly use my phone at night. The young guy in the Bell Mobility store was transferring the service to my new phone and announced, "I just changed you to a new plan. You now pay 30 cents per minute all of the time. It will be cheaper for you." I said, "How is 30 cents per minute all of the time cheaper than what I had? Change it back." He went back to the computer and you could see it in his face that something was wrong. "I can't change it back," he said. He got on the phone and Bell Mobility REFUSED to change it back. I took the phone from him and demanded to get my old plan back. "We can't," they said, "we no longer offer that plan" "But, I didn't make the change!" I exclaimed, "the kid did it without my permission!" I was told "Too bad, we have no way of putting you back on that plan." I went up several levels of management and the answer was the same. Nice way to forcibly move customers to the new, more expensive plan! I should have told them where to go, but I live in a semi-rural area and Bell is the only cell that provides reliable service. I want to have a cell as a backup in case my car breaks down or if my home phone service is out. I took the phone anyhow. The prepaid plans changed a couple of months later and I am now charged 30 cents per minute for the first two minutes, then 10 cents per minute thereafter. Still more expensive.

About ten months down the road, the Audiovox wouldn't hold a charge for long or even take one at times. The phone SHOULD have been under warranty but Bell insisted that it wasn't. They offered me a loaner phone for $30 while the Audiovox was in for repairs. I said "No thanks!" and bought a car charger. The charge on the phone now depletes after one call.

I am going to purchase a new Nokia from Virgin Mobile. Same network, nicer people. I have never had a problem with a Nokia phone. They literally take a beating and still keep working for years. I now have Primus VOIP for home phone service and satellite from Star Choice. Just say no to Bell, people. If enough of us do it, they may eventually get the message.

Starchoice? I pity you. I would sooner watch colour patterns on my screen then subscribe to their ghetto service.

No problems with Star Choice. Excellent signal strength. Was able to cut the bill down to $20 with tax per month when laid off. Lost signal much less often in bad weather than Bell.

The problem with Starchoice is their lack of programming & minimal hardware choices. I find it hard to believe that starchoice gives you a better signal... perhaps your expressvu dish wasn't aligned correctly?

Really?

Now bell trys to make cancelling your contract really hard...
you need to give them 30 days notice... and pay them $200 per phone (i think you pay more for cancelling a three year contract, but i dunno i only signed a 2 yr) also even so after this they will continue to try and bill you (although you dont have to pay it after you pay the 200) my mom recieved bills for like almost 6 months after cancelling her plan.... if you dial 611 on your cell youll get a stupid bell rep who will give you the run around , but he may be able to tell you how much it cost....

i am sorry in advance for the crap bell is gunna pull... welcome to my nightmare
Well right now I too am having problems with that... thety somehow upped a $200 cancellation fee to $400 is this entirely legal?
My plan is a 3 yr one, I also asked for a specific phone but the sales-person who was serving me pulled out a different one and then said it was a better deal.. please help ^^:angryfire:

I'm also having a difficult time with Bell. I signed a 3 year contract with them which will be up this November. I have recently been hired by Telus and want to take advantage of the deals they are offering me. I called Bell to ask how much it would cost me to cancel my contract that has 8 months left...$400! It's odd because with a 1 year contract (more months then I have left) you can get out of it for $100, but I have to pay $400. So I figured, alright I'll keep the contract up until it's done and move on although the only problem is my phone can barely keep a charge and it's been through everything. I asked a rep if I was able to get some sort of discount on a new phone and she said that yes I could, but only if I renewed my contract.

I'm contemplating on biting the bullet and paying out the $400 just to get away from that ****hole of a company.

If your phone's essentially dead, chuck it, cut your plan to the bare minimum, and stay on til Nov. It will probably cost you less than $400, and then go get yourself a phone from Telus.

Funny thing is, I calculated it out and I would save $10 by staying with Bell and cutting it down to bare minimum compared to the offers I can get with telus.

We've got cell phones thru President's Choice (Bell provider). They're prepaid and we find that we pay a lot less ($25 for max. 2 months) than we would if we'd go with an actual cell phone plan. It may make a difference that we don't deal directly with Bell but thru President's Choice.

Yeah, Bell definetly has the most reasonable prepaid plan in terms of prices. I don't really expect to talk a lot, but I need a mobile company line, so I'm leaning towards them. I know a lot of folks who've never had any problems, but I don't doubt they're evil – what cell phone company isn't? I've heard horror stories about all of them.

Does anyone know if you can register any Bell phone for their prepaid program? Or do you need special ones?

No, if the contract was signed it was signed. Your best bet is to try to pay someone to take over you contract, but pay them less than the deactivation fee, obviously.

bell mobility review

I have bell prepaid...it is by far the worst cell phone service ive ever had..I used to have pc mobile which was fairly cheap 20 cents a mins all the time. u could get unl.evenings and weekends internet and ulm.txting.however the problem i had was i lived 30 mins away from the nearest place to buy minutes so i had to buy a new cell phone which i like.So i call aliant (this is what i went through before the switch to bell) to activate my phone xmas day i have 2 wait 30 mins on hold and when i finally do it they dont even activate it right so i have 2 csll back later and do it...once that is all said and done i picked a plan and now pay 39 cents a min.during the day and 5 cents during the night and weekends which is in some ways cheaper and some ways expensive and i got the unlited texting for 10$/month and browser for 5$ a month. now i was lucky enough to still have call display and these other features on my account when they switched to bell or ide be paying more..Anyways i always seem to have problems with money being randomly taken off my account sometimes for texting..but other times large amounts like 30$ disappear and when i call they say its something like oh sir you are being charged for txtin when i aint. ive had to cal them at least 35 times since i got my phone for these and other issues..bell also charges 2$ for certain "inquiries" into your account which i think is a complete scam along with the 3.95 sys.access fee (which by the way i never had to pay with pc mobile nor did i have to pay an activation fee with pc) .so i think bell is just a complete rip off so your best bet is to STAY AWAY FROM THEM. Get pc mobile or even telus is better.

hmm dunno what to say.. I've used bell and it's been fine.. so far
But then again, I got it recently, and it's after Bell was bought by the Ontario Teachers whatever pension thing. And with the olympics 2010 coming to vancouver, they 'appear' to be shaping up.. alot... at least in the customer service department. I say give it a chance because of the change. Of course if you're comfy with ur current provider, by all means, stay with it.. I just wanted a change from rogers (my contract ended).. not that it was bad (price was kinda high, but what isn't nowadays orz...). I agree that things seem expensive, but if you dig around alot with the customer rep... to the point where they're tired of u, rather than u're tired of them, u get enough info to make better decisions to save money. Now the only thing I am very iffy about is the Bell internet. Expressvu seems alright.. it's just the internet :S woot shaw!
