The invasion of privacy is serious. Should we be worried about our data being watched by China? A mobile app riddled with trouble, “My 2022” is mandated for all that attend the Winter Games this week. What will Beijing do with the data collected from the athletes, officials, and journalists there? And how easy is it for China to listen to you? Join me and two experts to talk about this issue as worries of safety, security, and COVID-19 ramp up for those that attend Beijing 2022.

What's your big boner over China all about?

I'll help you chill a little bit. Nothing like some Dan Fogelberg to right the ship!

Beijing tightens 'social stability' for Olympics; Exiled Tibetans protest ahead of Olympics

It’s T-minus one day until the #BeijingWinterOlympics. The State Department says American athletes have the right to protest—as more and more speak up against human rights abuses there. On the other hand, Speaker Nancy Pelosi is urging them to stay silent until they’ve left Beijing, for their own safety. In a last-ditch effort to get its human rights narrative under control, Chinese regime officials are arresting dissidents and reining in social media chatter. The goal? To prevent people from speaking out during the Games. An Olympian sheds tears while in Beijing, after she was sent into #Isolation for seven days. She had been blocked from entering the Olympic Village over a positive virus test, but was still kept out, even after testing negative. One Chinese man is headed to a U.S. prison. He’s sentenced to spend two years there, as punishment for his part in a million-dollar fake iPhone scheme.

Putin, Xi signal new level of cooperation; US warns Chinese firms over possible Russia bans

The Olympic Flame is lit in Beijing. But this year, the world is focusing on more than just what’s happening inside the city’s stadium. Russia’s president is in Beijing for the opening of the Winter Olympics. But while there, he met in person with Chinese leader Xi Jinping for the first time in two years. India announces a last-minute diplomatic boycott of the Olympics—but for a different reason than most. Beijing selected a Chinese commander to be an Olympic torchbearer—despite the man’s role in deadly border clashes with India. The House passes a bill to help the United States compete with China. But it remains to be seen how Washington plans to hold Beijing accountable. A video clip triggers outrage online and revives debate over a crime going back decades in China. A suspected victim of bride trafficking, one woman is found chained inside a shed.

In this special episode, we sat down with Laura Harth, campaign director with Safeguard Defenders, and Cleo Paskal, associate fellow at Chatham House. They touch on #HumanRights suppression and censorship, not just in China but around the world, how it’s ramped up amid the #WinterOlympics, and what can be done going forward.

'Shame on Zhu Yi': China turns on US-born Olympian; Complaints grow from Olympians in quarantine

A figure skater born and raised in the United States has come under fire in China—all over a fall she took during her Winter Olympics debut. Part of Team China, online critics are now attacking her unusual family ties. Chinese tennis star #PengShuai denies accusing anyone of sexual assault, after posting on social media last year about an incident involving a former communist official. Now, some are questioning whether she’s speaking under duress. Outrage erupts online over one Taiwanese Olympian’s practice session. She was spotted wearing a Team China uniform. Quarantined Olympians report poor conditions in Beijing. Reports range from losing weight and lack of proper food, to sleeping in clothing out of fear. A Chinese telecom giant is protesting. The U.S. telecom watchdog banned the company from providing service inside the country, citing espionage concerns.

US-born China skiier dubbed 'Beijing's daughter'; Top ski jumpers disqualified for suit violations

Five top athletes get disqualified from the Beijing Olympics ski jumping final. But the ski wear suit violations seem to be sparking more conversation than who got the gold. A Chinese speed skater trips a fellow women’s division competitor. Accusations are mounting over whether it was on purpose. But that’s not all. In the men’s category, another skater from Team China pushes his opponent, causing him to fall. Judges opted not to penalize him. A U.S.-born sports star is rising to fame on Team China–after she claimed a gold medal. Now, the Communist Party is urging her to thrive, all to support its national ‘glory.’ And a report dives into how American tech giants support Chinese military development. Top names on the list? Microsoft, GE, and Intel.

It's true that China's security is extreme and they can track anyone, anywhere within minutes.

I don't know where I got the video (I now wish I had kept it) but there was a journalist (wouldn't surprise me if it was CBC) that thought it was really neat and he was excited to show just how quickly they could "find" him.

He started on a commuter train, got off of it into a huge crowd of people (it's always crowded in China isn't it?) and then went to various places, shops, etc. After they had found him, they showed him how they were able to track him and find out exactly where he was at any time after leaving the train station.

This reporter thought it was really "cool" but it scared the crap out of me which is why I thought having the Olympics in China was an extremely foolish decision. I don't trust that all the information they get from all the competitors, managers & families will be stored for "future" use otherwise why have it?

The cost of silence: Beijing Winter Olympics; Gold medalist avoids questions on dual citizenship

Athletes competing in the Beijing Winter Olympics are faced with a challenge. And it's more than just the competition. Many are now stuck in a dilemma between winning medals and keeping their morals. Embroiled in controversy, the Games have prompted scrutiny, calls for boycotts, and pushback. But in the end, the Winter Olympics have gone forward. Now caught in the middle are the athletes. Speaking out could cost them more than just a place on the winner's platform—but staying silent could deal a blow to their conscience. In this special report, we look at the choice athletes competing in Beijing are forced to make, how the fear of speaking out has spread around the world, and what can be done to stem that threat.

House bill aims to sanction top Chinese officials; Detention centers located 10 mins from Olympics

A new bill introduced in the House looks to sanction thousands of China’s top officials, including Xi Jinping and his family. A quarantined journalist longs for a cup of coffee, after more than a week in Olympic isolation. We look at what athletes say about the scene in Beijing. The Olympics seek to build a more peaceful world. But China may be using the Games for another purpose. We hear from a Chinese American architect about what the Beijing Games have cost his family. A map shows just how close visitors to China are to the country’s human rights abuses. It reveals Beijing detention centers are just minutes away from Olympic stadiums. A dissident and former torchbearer for the 2008 Summer Olympics speaks out after China selected a Uyghur athlete to carry the 2022 Olympic flame.

Why Are America’s Athletes Defecting to China? Red China’s Hidden Olympic Agenda | Wide Angle

For this special two-part edition of The Wide Angle, I’m joined by China Economics Professor, Dr. Antonio Graceffo—A graduate of the Shanghai University of Sport. I garner his insights into two pivotal U.S-China issues: American-born athletes starring on the China-olympic team; and China’s startling high-volume investment in U.S. biopharm and genomics companies. While seemingly unrelated, these two topics are both underscored by the prevailing danger posed by the Chinese Communist Party to U.S. national security. Why are defected, U.S.-born athletes being presented as the stars of the Beijing 2022 China team? And what’s in store for those, like Zhu Yi (former Beverly Zhu from California) who’s performance may not be up to scratch? Dr. Graceffo is the author of “Beyond the Belt and Road: China's Global Expansion” and “The Wrestler's Dissertation.”

Scary crashes at Beijing Olympics ski event; Olympian Eileen Gu cashing in on competing for China

Reports find U.S.-born skier Eileen Gu is cashing in on her fame in China. Following her victory in Beijing, she's expected to secure dozens more sponsorships and endorsements from Chinese companies. But experts warn of risks. More than half of China's Olympic hockey players are originally from somewhere else. But some are questioning why the mostly American and Canadian athletes are allowed to compete for Beijing at all, as one of them refuses to comment on his citizenship status. And we look into some of the seemingly extreme results of Beijing’s “zero-cases” pandemic policy. One man has reportedly taken over 90 tests in just a matter of months.

China Using COVID-19 to Prevent Athletes From Competing?

Video

We explore how a sporting event explodes into geopolitics. The tension between China and South Korea is reaching a tipping point. At the dawn of the Korean presidential election, the anti-Chinese Communist Party sentiment was at an all-time high. We explore how that is impacting the U.S.-China relationship, and where South Korea places itself.
And a bizarre phenomenon is happening in the Olympic bubble. The system that is supposed to keep everyone safe is only making everyone scared. From surveillance to COVID-19 protocols, one journalist is questioning if the rules are really to keep us safe, or is there foul play?

Beijing Games: A Celebration of the CCP’s Cruelty and Brutality

Video

Over the Target
LEE SMITH

After World War II, many wondered how world powers could have sent their Olympic teams to Berlin in 1936. It legitimized the Nazi regime. And yet today, the world has repeated its terrible mistake by participating in the Beijing Games.
It’s not just populations within China like the Uyghurs that have been targeted by the Beijing regime. Only two years ago, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) unleashed a deadly pandemic that killed millions around the world, destroyed families and communities, and impoverished entire nations. Western officials may choose to overlook the death and destruction China left in its wake, but ordinary people can’t.

Politics enter Beijing’s Winter Games. Despite the rule keeping politics out of sports, host city Beijing opts to repeat its “One China” policy during an Olympic panel.
Summer 2008 vs. Winter 2022—Tibet takes a radically different response to Beijing hosting the Olympics. Some blame it on generational change under the Communist Party.
A turning point for Japan’s relations with its communist neighbors. The country may soon expand its self-defense only policy to include striking enemy military bases.
And for those watching our full episode: Hong Kong reports 60 times more COVID-19 infections this month than last. Despite the city’s “zero-cases” policy, some patients are getting pushed out of overcrowded hospitals.
And the NBA’s most outspoken player on human rights abuses is in the spotlight, after he was traded to another team, but released the same day.

How will the Beijing Olympic Games be remembered? Draconian anti-CCP-virus measures? A doping scandal? Or will other controversies take the spotlight?
NBA free agent Enes Kanter Freedom has no regrets. He says the NBA has tried to silence him for speaking against Beijing—something that cost him his career.
Chinese genomics companies are expanding in the United States—amid fears their data could have military uses.
