Artist hopes sealskin Ellen portrait sparks discussion

A Newfoundland artist has created a portrait of Ellen DeGeneres out of sealskin and hopes to initiate a truthful discussion about the seal hunt.
DeGeneres, a vegan, recently gave $1.5 million to the Humane Society of the United States from money raised through retweets of a group selfie at the Oscars. The humane society has been outspoken against the seal hunt, stating Canadians club "baby seals" to death.
With the humane society in the news again, artist Rodney Mercer says he thought to himself, "Here we go again," another celebrity speaking out against the seal hunt.
"I could type something and post it online, but it would just disappear," he told QMI Agency from his Corner Brook, N.L., studio.
Instead, Mercer says he used his art to start the discussion.

Clearly, baby seal hunting is far more a skilled activity than the stereotype of batting practice that is floated by the media.

I just wish that groups like PETA would see this in terms of the artistic impression that is intended.... Perhaps a live demonstration of clubbing some PETA members and later displaying their art in a public venue might turn the tides on this

Shoulda known there was no point asking folk on here.

So, fur, skin, meat, oil. Sounds pretty "use the whole animal" to me. I take it the protestors are of the "wub da kewt widdle bunnies!" type?

Food source and the pelts are (I believe0 the most common usage... Oil? Maybe back in the day, but I would surprised if that were the case today.

As was mentioned though, they are hungry little critters and do have an impact on the fish stocks.

According to wikipedia, seal oil is used as a fish oil supplement.

Food source? Not really. For a few locals maybe. Oil and pelts. And it weren't the seals that did in the Grand Banks fishery.

Good thing I'm here to correct you all the time.
