Argentina's navy insisted Saturday that a missing submarine had seemed to be in good condition when it set off on a training mission, despite fears it later exploded beneath the sea with 44 crew members aboard.

Hopes for survivors, already largely crushed by reports of an explosion, dimmed further as the ARA San Juan entered its 10th day missing — which Is what experts had said would likely be the limit of its oxygen supply even if it remained intact beneath the sea.
But a multinational search and rescue effort continued Saturday, as a Norwegian ship carrying a U.S. undersea rescue module prepared to weigh anchor for the search zone, despite worsening weather.

The German-built diesel-electric submarine set off on Nov. 8 from the southernmost port of Ushuaia en route to Mar del Plata.

"Two days before setting sail, there was a check of the whole operating system," navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said as a news conference on Saturday. "The submarine doesn't sail if that's not done. If it set off from Ushuaia, it was because it was in condition to do so."

Balbi said the captain reported on Nov. 15 that there had been an electrical problem in a battery compartment. But he later communicated by satellite phone that the problem had been solved and that he would continue the voyage submerged toward Mar del Plata.

Since then, there has been no contact with the San Juan, and no signs of the ship or debris despite an intensive search.

But it was also on Nov. 15 that both the U.S. Navy and the international nuclear test ban monitoring agency detected what appeared to be an undersea explosion in the area where the sub was operating.

I've been on a docked Sub and as a claustrophobic let me say no effing way would I ever go on one under water.

Hopefully if they did die because of the explosion that it was quick.....

It would have been sunk eventually anyway had the Argies tried to invade the Falklands again.

The Argentinian conspiracy theorists are probably blaming the Royal Navy for sinking her, already.

The fact that Britain sent out HMS Protector to help search for an Argie submarine has been met with anger amongst some Britons and ingratitude amongst some Argentinians.

Argentina's Workers' Party leader Gabriel Solano yesterday appeared to prefer that British forces did not help in the search, instead tweeting: 'F*** you! pirates.'

He then added: 'You are responsible for war crimes, like the sinking of the General Belgrado.'

The opposition party leader and Argentine legislator had earlier commented on a tweet from the British Embassy in Buenos Aires that British forces were joining in the search, writing: 'You are occupying troops in Argentine territories'.

He was immediately attacked by ordinary Argentinians who branded him an '***hole' and a 'moron'.

Silvia Del Palacaio wrote: 'This must be a fake, this can't be real, surely no-one can be much an A**HOLE!!!'

To which Monica Virgina Land replied: 'Yes he can. And he demonstrates it every day, every day he's more of a**hole. It's terrible, I'm disgusted to have a legislator like him.'

Florencia tweeted: 'There are 44 Argentinians em risk of their lives, the world is giving an enormous hand and you start a war on Twitter. Get real.'

MAX tweeted: 'Thank God people think and do not vote for this type of human scourge.'

And Noelia Lorenzo wrote, using an emoji of the British flag: 'You have no idea of human greatness. Nothing at all. You will never understand that those you love to hate, are giving everything to help Argentina. UK, such a gesture will never be forgotten.'

His comments come after another politician, Fernando Esteche, leader of the Quebracho party, also used Twitter to attack the deployment of British forces in the search for the missing sub.

He replied to a post about the operation on the Falkland Islands Twitter account: PIRATES NOW AND ALWAYS!!!!'

It probably matters more if it still seemed to be in good condition after the explosion than it was before said explosion.

There have been many more submarine accidents than the world knows.
