"I did weigh out the fact of 'OK, if I engage in children what will that get me versus if I have a career what will that get me? And ultimately, what's going to make me happiest?'" she said. "And the career won out."

Some people truly don't want kids, but sometimes you wonder if they're not deluding themselves, and there will come a day when they look around and say, 'hmm, something's missing in my life, I wonder what it is?'

If you don't want kids, don't have them, but don't come whining later when you're all alone.

Thank god for immigration because very soon we'd run out of people here.

We're too stupid to replicate new consumer units, Darkbeaver ???

LOL !!!

Why isn't stress killing the sperm of Mexican immigrants crossing the desert border into Arizona, New Mexico ?

Why are there population explosions in the poorest neighborhoods around the globe ?

And why is stress happening to couch potatoes holding the remote spanning the globe ?

What about vicarious stress ? We read ...therefore we stress ? We watch...therefore we get mad as hell ?

One should be careful in projecting scientific interpretations onto the decisions of people. It is possible that the researcher understands a question in one way but all the participants understood it in another. The "me-me-me's" are more of an abstract projection due to scapegoating the occasional free rider for society's perceived ills. I have yet to see a good definition of entitlement correlated with economic or social degradation.

Most people stand by their decision not to have children.

Most people stand by their decision not to have children.

I thought the correct term was 'to engage in children'.

Actually, I think that you'll find that one of the reasons that international adoption, for example, is so frequent, is that people tend to delay children until they are established career wise, or economically, and then they discover the declining fertility of the mid 30s, which then leads them to adopt. So there are quite a few people who don't stand by their 'decision' not to have children, but there certainly are quite a few who honestly do feel that way. I know several people who have no kids and are happy with their conscious decision to do so.

The big problem is that inflation is now too low. When my wife and I got married I was paying off a car, and in order to buy a house we had to borrow the down payment. It helped that that house cost just over $20,000.00. Prices went up fast in those days and within five years, that house was worth over forty grand. This is all on paper, but when prices went up, so did wages. When I got married I was making about ten thousand a year. Five years later my salary was doubled at least, and my mortgage stayed roughly the same. In another ten years I was making fifty thousand and my mortgage was paid off. Right now you couldn't buy that house for less than half a million. Oh I know that inflation hurts pensioners and those on fixed income but it can seem to work for you as well.

even worse, we're now engaging in a new baby boom here in alberta. Giant quantities of babies are being born right now.

Actually, it's not worse, but it is probably too little too late.

Another thing that people AND government have thought about too late is the lack of trades people right now. They have finally started pushing trades rather than high tech and University, but again, it is too little too late. We are in a crunch right now with not enough qualified trades people and it is only going to get worse as more and more boomers retire.

I think that people who don't have kids by choice are to be commended. We can not continue to grow...the planet is not growing...We're already way to warehoused now...
