Well, maybe Keddy's remarks were a bit harsh, but there seem to be enough unemployed roaming the streets of Halifax that you would think migrant workers wouldn't be needed. Problem is panhandling can be quite lucrative, plus you've got no boss leaning over your shoulder, keep our own hours, and the pay is tax free, but they certainly can be a nuisance when they commandeer busy intesections and sidewalks plying their "trade". Then you have those who just moan and kvetch for government handouts because that work, though it pays less, requires less elbow grease.

Harsh yes, inaccurate, well, maybe only just a little.

From the article....

Keddy suggested that farmers in the province need migrant labourers because unemployed Nova Scotians don't want the work. "All those no-good bastards sitting on the sidewalk in Halifax that can't get work," Tuesday's Chronicle Herald quotes Keddy as saying.

...

Well, I know it's harsh, but, I can see the frustration.

Are SOME Unemployed Haligonians "No-Good Bastards"? Of course some are. Not all of them, but some are.
Anyone who disputes that idea is crazy.

I missed this news item today, too bad I would have applauded the guy. A friend of mine did catch it and later watched Power Play on CTV. One of the guests was a tree farmer, as is Keddy. When pressed to give a reason for hiring migrant workers and after being told he did not have to worry about being politically correct, he was said to have talked about the lack of a good work ethic in the area. I would have applauded him too.

I've noticed a very good work ethic in the area, problem is, those folks are already working. There are also those who are chronically unemployed or unemployable by their own choosing. Unfortunately our system offers more of an incentive to not work. I can understand the frustration of trying to get seasonal workers too but it seems political correctness and molly coddling wins in the end.

That's been true in Saint John, as well; for the most part, those who want to work, are working. God knows, when you're trying to hire someone, the pickings are slim.

From my understanding, the east coast probably didn't even notice the world was in a recession. But then I don't watch TV, listen to radio or read news papers so I might be a little outdated.
