Another relocation question

Hi all,

I thought I could benefit from the collective wisdom of BCians and ask a few questions about moving to BC. My spouse and I are fed up with living in a large urban centre and are looking for a good area to relocate in BC. We're in our late 30s, have no children and have recently sold a property here in Ontario. We are looking to open a small art/design-based service and manufacturing business somewhere that offers a good quality of life and decent business opportunities. We have backgrounds in art, photography and industrial design, but currently he works in IT and I'm in government so we could work in those fields if need be. We're looking for a lifestyle change, therefore we are not looking to move to Vancouver. I lived and worked in BC 10 years ago and would love to come back -I love the island, Queen Charlottes, Kootenays, Smithers/Terrace. I am hoping that someone could sell me on their area as a good place to set up a business. What are taxes like for small businesses?

1st off, it is BC'ers.... not 'ians'.
2ndly We are suffering a shortage of wisdom.

You love Terrace and Smithers? Yikes!!

I am hoping that someone could sell me on their area as a good place to set up a business.

The Island is nice.... but we don't care for foreigners from Ontario.... sorry.

What are taxes like for small businesses?

Probably about the same as anywhere.... although our premier goes around bragging about our taxes being low.... but he's mostly a drunken mess... I wouldn't believe him. Although he's not nearly the drunkard that Ralph Klein is....

Campbell River has very reasonable property taxes and expects continued growth via retiring Albertans and Torontonians.

Err... Thanks for the warm welcome Joe, didn't mean to offend you. Geez, I never thought I'd be considered a foreigner in my own country... Well, I just thought I'd see if anyone had insight into economic conditions outside of Vancouver. For the record, our business has nothing to do with porn, (whose being offensive now?) And not to belabour the obvious, small businesses create a LOT of jobs in Canada. As for loving Smithers and Terrace, what's wrong with that? The scenery along the Skeena River is spectacular.

Personally, I like the dead centre, Vanderhoof....(that should raise some guffaws)

The Central Interior is going through a lot of changes at this time, and that's always a good time to move in...at the ground floor so to speak....

I've had something to do with design / manufacturing types of businesses and can say that transportation wise, this area is as good as any....

Thank you Northboy! This is the type of info I am looking for... BTW, I have visited Vanderhoof! And having travelled the road between Rupert and Vancouver countless times as a treeplanter, I can concur that accessibility to more urban centres is not a problem! Thank you - If I have specific questions I will post as I do more research...

Agreed... everything surrounding Terrace is beautiful.... Terrace itself is poo.

Looking at the Kootnays ourselves. Have to be careful though as some places as yet have no Cell service. Wireless internet you can work anywhere! Invemere to Cranbrook is growing like crazy and there is so much recreation both summer and winter. Winters are shorter than some areas but lots of snow (good skiing)

I had the opportunity to live in Victoria and Nanaimo for a few months and highly recommend Nanaimo because property is reasonal and look ahead to booming economy for small businesses in the near future
