She was shocked when she called me saying she heard a explosion or something and the streets were closed where she was and she asked me what I knew and that she had heard that a tim hortins had been blown up.

I told her that it doesn't appear to be a big explosion. Yeah it is kind of scary that she was close by and she is a heavy coffee drinker.

Sad news - hopefully it will be confirmed soon as to whether or not it as actually a bomb or not...probably pretty disconcerting for folks in Toronto while they wait to find out...

Explosion at Tim Hortons - one person dead

Frank Tridico -- SooNews.ca -- Sunday, April 2, 2006, 7:51PM

Toronto investigating officers refuse to comment on whether a Sunday explosion in a Tim Hortons bathroom was in fact a bomb. The blast occurred just after 1:00pm near the intersections of Yonge and Bloor Streets, one of the busiest downtown areas.

A fire department spokesperson stated that the lone victim had burns to his body, but a fire did not ensue in the building after the blast. Witnesses described complete chaos and pandemonium with persons immediately fleeing the scene.

Large Area Cordoned Off

Law enforcement cordoned off approximately one city block and evacuated the area as a precaution. The moves, particularly the expansive coverage of area to collect potential evidence, raises questions over whether investigators suspect it may have been premeditated, and/or if there may have been further locations within the radius that could be at risk of a similar explosion.

Officers held the aforementioned pattern until other support and special investigation units arrived to expand and enhance the investigation. Early news reports said a man was seen going into the restroom with explosives strapped to his chest. Police would not confirm the reports.

The police bomb squad worked at the scene for much of the afternoon. They used a remote controlled bomb disposal robot to investigate an object found nearby. Yonge Street was shut down in both directions between Yorkville and Bloor, reportedly tying up traffic around one of the City's busiest intersections.

There is no word yet on what caused the blast. Once police declare the scene to be safe the fire marshal's office will begin an investigation.

Lockdown at another Tim Hortons

Later Sunday, another Tim Hortons outlet in Toronto was locked down after a suspicious package was found inside the restaurant, just a few subway stations north of where the explosion occurred. An emergency task force unit had been dispatched to the second location and the area had been evacuated.

While Toronto has seen an upsurge in gun related crime, and a rise in both drug trafficking and gang expansion, the current developments raise particular alarm. At issue is whether the explosion was a premeditated act, and what role if any the victim had to the explosion itself.

Information by law enforcement and other investigating authorities has been limited, much more so than in its early stages, and prompting greater concern over what has developed. SooNews.ca will continue bringing you developments as they unfold

RE: An explosion in a Tor

wicked.

let's hope he's the only moron who died.

Canada, you just lost your suicide bomber virginity.

Doesn't feel all that nice to be morally raped by a turd wrapped in C4, does it?

So I guess it's now time to step up the right wing facist patriotism and denounce Islam and condemn it's followers to the ghettos?

Waiting with baited breath. Here's a real test for your Prime minister.

Yes, get the wiretaps out. Restart the emergency broadcast system. Pre-emptive strikes here we come.

RE: An explosion in a Tor

hahahaaa

I am interested in how the government handle this... and I hope it's not too soft, nor too radical.

I can't help but feel like comparing the response to an American one. It's a stigma for Canada to be inclose proximity geographically to the Bush administration.

Many outsiders see Canada as a conservative and free thinking society but so many ignorant people out there think Canada is part of the US, because of it's geographic location. I've seen schoolkids point this out and it horrifies me.

So I am waiting for people to compare the Canadian response to an american one, which would be to strike fear into the heart of each and every one of you, and place a curfew on the whole city.

what is this world coming to...

That's pretty funny JoeyB, you are comparing a possible "accident" at TIm Hortons to the events of September 11th? What is the world coming too indeed. A case of short memory has always been my theory.

I remember a day in 1993 when the WTC was a scene of a former terrorist attack and I don't recall a curfew, I also recall a terror attack on the CIA in that same year, nope no fear or curfew, or the Oklahoma City bombing, nope can't recall anything.

Try again.

Canada had a taste of terrorism before it became schick in the US. 1985 Air India bombing.

The investigation was around $100 million and no one was found guilty.

Bagri and Malik had been on trial since April 28, 2003, in a proceeding that has cost more than $100 million. The cost of the investigation brings the bill so far to about $130 million.

The latest news I could find was that witnesses saw the man carry a gas can into the washroom. Apparently he was either comitting suicide or arson. If it was suicide he picked a strange way to do it and not many arsonists set fire to a bathroom. This is one for the strange file.
