American tourist gives Nazi salute in Germany, is beaten up

BERLIN (AP) — Police say a drunken American man was punched by a passer-by as he gave the stiff-armed Nazi salute multiple times in downtown Dresden.

Dresden police said Sunday the 41-year-old, whose name and hometown weren’t given for privacy reasons, suffered minor injuries in the 8:15 a.m. Saturday assault.

Police say the American, who is under investigation for violating Germany’s laws against the display of Nazi symbols or slogans, had an extremely high blood alcohol level. His assailant fled the scene, and is being sought for causing bodily harm.

It’s the second time this month that tourists have gotten themselves into legal trouble for giving the Nazi salute.

On August 5 two Chinese tourists were caught taking photos of themselves making the gesture in front of Berlin’s Reichstag building.

Seems to be problematic.

American tourists are notorious for not knowing how to behave in other countries. Lots of them get beat up while visiting Montreal, simply for being loud-mouth, ignorant assholes.

Why do all the buildings in Dresden look so modern? I thought it was quite an old city.

And the two Chinamen? What explains their behaviour?

I've seen some really arrogant behavior on the part of young Chinese tourists who were visiting Niagara on the Lake. It was literally swaggering and braying at the locals. I would say that the exact same phenomenon is at work. Both the Chinese and American cultures teach their children that they are the greatest beings on the planet ... numero uno ... and everyone else is somehow defective and therefore worthy of their criticism.

I was remembering a particularly bizarre example of that sort of attitude a few years back in Newcastle Ontario at a yacht club. The weather was stinky and various boats transiting the Lake that day put in there for shelter, so the bar was crowded. There was a single American at the bar seriously mouthing off about how great his great nation is and what a pestilent nothing this one is in his (New Jersey?) accent ...not from "just over the border". We (a few dozen) just stared at this guy in disbelief. No one even answered him. He was one of those Thalidomide kids, all "grown up" and we listened and listened and no one said boo.

Now, had that been reversed and he had been a Canadian down in New Jersey, someone would have got his gun and his rotting body would eventually wash up on the beach.

Anti-Nazism is the wrong solution to Nazism: they feed on one another. A better solution is befriending and education.

I've seen arrogant Canadians abroad acting like they were the rightful locals and the locals were the undesirable foreigners.

Most non-Europeans, like this fellow, treat the subject of Nazis not very seriously indeed. To non-Europeans, the Nazis were a long way away. It'd be different had America, for example, been under Nazi rule or had the Nazis just 20 miles away from their border - like we British.

Still, ignorance begets ignorance.

In fact, the Nazis did invade the British Isles. Here they are in Jersey:

I had something bizarre happen to me in Newfoundland. I was part of a group of four Maritime Command sailors on a shore leave in St. John's one evening. We were in "civvys" but were conspicuously clean cut for the 1970's. We went into a bar with a rippin' blues band inside and were surrounded by a half dozen young men all pointing knives at us in close quarters. "Are you Navy or Coast Guard," they asked. They were NOT referring to Canadian Navy or Coast Guard. The Canadian Navy visits Newfoundland so infrequently post WWII that we weren't even on their list of options. Newfoundland had not been in Confederation all that long, the fishery was still intact and the Newfies had not yet spread out all over continental Canada, so they didn't know us very well, yet. They thought that we were Americans. When the found out that we were Canadians, the knives disappeared and we drank for free. We just happened upon a place that had to deal with American magic so much that they were ready to "do" them. It must have been bad, there over the years.
