Amateur botches 'restoration' of Christ painting

By QMI Agency

A churchgoer in her 80s had the best intentions when she attempted to restore a 19th-century fresco of Jesus at a church in Spain.
But her botched efforts have infuriated officials from The Sanctuary of Mercy Church in Zaragoza and has left them scrambling to determine if the 120-year-old artwork can be saved.
The elderly woman acted without authorization from anyone, according to the Centre for Borjanos, which had already received a donation from the granddaughter of the artist Elias Garcia Martinez to professionally restore it.
Excess moisture in the church over the last 18 months had caused the Ecce Homo to deteriorate.
The centre said no one realized what the senior was doing until she had finished.
The value of the small mural was not very high, the statement said, but it holds a sentimental value. The church is considering legal action against the woman, according to a blog for the centre.

Spanish newspaper Heraldo de Aragon reports the original painter's family believes the damage done to the artwork is "irreversible." Professional restorers will assess the wrecked painting.
The woman responsible, identified in Spanish media as Cecilia Gimenez, told TV station RTVE that the priest was aware of her intentions.

Holy crap!8O

I'm actually torn between feeling bad for the old lady (80 for goodness sake!) and wanting to slap her!

Stupid is as stupid does! What priest in his right mind would simply allow any parishioner to "dabble" in restoration of an irreplaceable antiquity? Gotta love it.

As i said on the newslink, let a professional do the job.

I didn't realize you wrote the news link. I further, didn't notice where you said that within it.

I did however, read where she said the priest had been aware of her intentions. Hence my statement: "Stupid is as Stupid does".

Did I miss something integral to the O/P?

Botched Spanish fresco becoming a tourist trap

MADRID - Remember the Spanish fresco that an elderly lady destroyed when she took it upon herself to "restore" and ended up making Jesus look like a monkey?
Well, now the town that hosts it wants to turn it into a tourism trap, opening a centre that celebrates the botched painting.
Borja Mayor Eduardo Arilla said 160,000 people had come to see the fresco since the story of Cecilia Gimenez's restoration of the Christ fresco in a town sanctuary went viral in 2012. He said with the new centre, the town hoped to keep attracting up to 30,000 visitors annually.
"It's to give the painting a new impetus," Arilla told The Associated Press, before the centre's inauguration Wednesday.
And yes, Gimenez, 85, will be at the opening too, where she'll take half the proceeds of the sales of T-shirts and coffee mugs featuring her monkey fresco.
A combination of three documents provided by the Centre de Estudios Borjanos on August 22, 2012 shows the original version of the painting Ecce Homo (L) by 19th-century painter Elias Garcia Martinez, the deteriorated version (C) and the botched restoration version in Santuario de Misericordia church in Borja, northeastern Spain. Spanish woman Cecilia Gimenez, 82, took it upon herself to fix up Ecce Homo (Behold the Man).
