The Taliban were in that town in such large numbers because they ran there from battle elsewhere, not from some slow build-up. afa ongoing presence goes we were gaining momentum in that the villagers were tipping off Canadians about what was going on, who where and when. That's what led up to last week's conflict.

You're right about that. I was working on the impression from yesterdays story. My mistake. There are better details now. But the rest of what I said about the Taliban 'holding towns hostage' is accurate.

Civilians are used and abused by both sides, civilian control is afterall the point of conflict like this. I do understand the difference between deliberate targeting of civilians and that of unintended causualties but I can hear M Albrights words, that the civilian deaths are worth it in the end as long as the empire prevails. While we hear much about the care taken to avoid civilian deaths the numbers speak otherwise.
