I am both a music lover and a professional musician. I know about her because I'm a piano teacher. Many of my students want to play some of her songs so I can confirm that she is appealing to both children and adults (including teenagers.) I don't tend to listen to mainstream pop music in general so I probably wouldn't have heard about her if it wasn't for me teaching piano to almost 50 people a week.

My first thought listening to her songs was that she indeed has a strong vocal style. While I'm not the kind of musician to really listen to her type of music, there is no way in the world I would rejoice in her having serious medical issues with her vocal chords. That would be like rejoicing when a great concert pianist breaks a hand. When music is both your passion and your profession, this type of problem can be a devastating blow. So I truly wish her the best.

OK, I looked her up...

1, Not bad. I recognize a couple of her songs.
2, Nice voice. Not my cup-o-tea though, musically speaking. I like punk rock and punk fusion.
3, I like the figure.
4, I can see why she hasn't been branded. She doesn't fit the mold.

Says a lot about the music industry, and society in general, IMHO.

It does say a lot, unfortunately it says all the wrong things. If she doesn't fit the mold then I may have to check her out because that's usually what I find the most appealing.

Well said.

I've never understood the propensity some have, or perhaps to say the need that some have, to actively malign music they don't like. If you don't like it, simply don't listen. Simple enough, right?

Simple solutions for the simple minded-unfortunately life is often more complex and One Size Does Not Fit All.

This marginally talented supremely irritating women has her screeching voice on radio station 24/7-if I left every store where her bleatings are broadcast I'd soon go hungry.

Ok, whatever. Complex life situations? We are talking about background music in a store right? Apply the K.I.S.S. principal, you're blood pressure will be better for it.

And yet there are a few of us who shop regularly and have never heard her before, so I kind of think the possibility starvation is something of an exaggeration.

And yet you're having difficulty with it.

Well of course, didn't you get the memo? This is a complex thing, lol.

Ha! You can rest assured that anyone whose songs are on the radio so frequently is not going hungry. Nothing irritating about her. She's rollin' in the deep and it's not water! It's $$$$$

20,984 posts and this is the best you can do?
I was all your post was worth.

The only time I've heard her music, is when someone on a job site puts the radio on an easy listening station.

Never hear her on the morning show on CFNY, never on 95.5, or 107.1.

Don't like her, change the station.

I knew I should have posted this in the Jokes Forum.
I agree.

You find it impossible to ignore background music? How do you function in the big world? Must be difficult to go outdoors with all of that background noise of traffic, birds, other people, etc.

Earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones might be a solution, or brain surgery.

The UK's Jann Arden

Yeah, the main stream 'music' industry is about image, not voice, and every once in a while, someone like Jann Arden or Adele pops up, people who can sing, and aren't the entertainment industry image of what a female singer is supposed to look like.

Unless you havent been to any type of store in the past 6 months or so, you've heard her.

I haven't. But then again I don't listen to commercial radio stations. I do however, shop as my credit card bills remind me each month.

Just to hear for myself I brought up her Youtube site and listened to a few tunes. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Probably not enough to buy any of her music, but it did not have the fingernails on a blackboard effect on me that jazz, rap, and hip-hop has.

I'll probably give her songs a bit more of a listen later to see if there is anything I like among the twenty odd songs that are posted.

I'm going to amend this post. I listened to the One and Only and give it a five out of five rating. Thanks for pointing out this artist.

Never heard of her either. Just checked out youtube and I am with you Bar Sinister, pleasantly surprised. I have always liked that bluesy sound in a female singer. I just loved Janis Joplin's singing. But I do think that style may be hard on the voice. Of course Janis' voice may have been modified by the whiskey. My favorite;

Another Little Piece of My Heart

And she weren't no beauty queen either, but so what?

Adele is quite good.

She's also demanded that everyone who scores a free pass to her shows hands over at least £12.50 to charity.

she's not that unique and she's certainly not a sex symbol.

Unlike many of today's female singers, especially the American ones, Adele sells record because of her beautiful voice rather than her beautiful looks. That's the way it should be. She's a singer, not a supermodel.

One of my favourites as well. Quite amazingly Melissa Etheridge does a great cover of that song. But then, both Melissa and Janis made it on talent, unlike some modern pop divas. Piece Of My Heart - Melissa Etheridge - YouTube
