President Donald Trump announced Friday that he has directed his administration to "begin the process of eliminating policy exemptions that give Hong Kong different and special treatment." His announcement came a day after China's People's Congress passed Beijing's controversial new national security law related to Hong Kong. Trump's announcement will profoundly affect the future of Hong Kong and the U.S.-China relationship.
(The Beijing Butchers are on a Crusade to bully and harass others and it is bad enough that they harass their own people - but they also harass their foreign neighbours! Red China has engaged in the sort of “gunboat diplomacy” that the rest of the world abandoned many decades ago!)
(Not only has China been using its growing military to grab up small un-inhabited islands in the South China Sea and fortifying them over the protests of five other nations that ALL have legit claims on some of the islands - China has been grabbing up undersea mineral rights in the disputed territories and has been blocking fishermen from their traditional areas around the islands!)
(IN the most recent news - Chinese destroyers repeatedly cut across the bows of an Indonesian research vessel mapping potential underwater mineral sites until the Indonesian ship was forced LEAVE ITS OWN HOME WATERS by the Chinese harassment! IN another case a Viet Nam fishing vessel was rammed and sunk by a Chinese destroyer apparently because the Viets did not cut and abandon their costly nets and flee the disputed area fast enough to suit the Chinese BULLIES!)
(And now Beijing Butchers have decided they have had enough of the protests by desperate Hong Kong citizens - frantically trying to save a few fragments of their former civil rights that they enjoyed under British rule! Naturally this remnant of western civil rights is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE to Beijing and they have decided to crack down on those who think they should be able to approach and to have some influence on their own govt leaders!)

The president's decision was based on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's certification to Congress Wednesday that "Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China," a decision he said gave him no pleasure but that "sound policy-making requires a recognition of reality."
(Trump et al are correct - a relatively free Hong Kong is worth cooperating with! But since Beijing is determined to turn the place into yet another labour camp - there is nothing left to save of civil rights or democracy in that city state! And certainly there is NO REASON for Yankees to be out of pocket for Red Chinese privileges!)
The facts on the ground support Pompeo's assessment. Without universal suffrage, Hong Kongers are stuck with a government made up of pro-Beijing business elites who are beholden to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), rather than accountable to 7.5 million residents of the city. Under the assertive CCP Party Secretary Xi Jinping, Hong Kongers have seen accelerated erosion of their political freedom for years.
(Hong Kong had been running its own legal system - with judges appointed from within the city and convicted criminals jailed within the city as well and thus able to have visits from family etc. But China intends to take accused people - meaning political dissidents who have offended the PARTY - to the mainland to be judged by hard liners who despise the Hong Kong civil rights and are deeply offended that Hong Kong PREFERS the British Civil Ways! Further - those from Hong Kong who are convicted would be jailed on the mainland with NO WAY to receive family visits and NO WAY to complain about HARSH treatment!)
Nine leaders of the 2014 Umbrella movement, which demanded universal suffrage in Hong Kong, were sentenced to prison. Four pro-democracy legislators were disqualified for modifying their oaths of allegiance to China during their swearing-in ceremony. Hong Kong authorities refused to issue visas to several human rights activists and foreign journalists. Beijing even sent mainland Chinese police to Hong Kong to arrest booksellers and a Chinese tycoon, bypassing Hong Kong’s own judicial system.
(Beijing has made recent noises about the SHAME of having western influence in the Hong Kong legal system; and the Beijing use of cops from the mainland indicates those cops were selected for what Soviets generally refer to as “Ideological Purity” meaning devotion to the PARTY and willingness to cracks heads or impose tortures in the name of The Peoples Party! This is exactly the sort of thinking that influences Our idiot Boy Justin who believes that if you disagree with him then you CANNOT be a Canadian and deserve punishment!)
(Thus Cdns who complain about how Trudope is handling natives rights issues or the invasion of illegals are automatically labelled as “racists” - in the same way that ANY dispute with Soviet Socialist Party Policy gets you labelled as a “counter revolutionary” and as a confused trouble maker in need of jail time!)

On the eve of the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover in 2017, the Chinese Foreign Ministry declared, “Now that Hong Kong has returned to the motherland for 20 years, the Sino-British Joint Declaration, as a historical document, no longer has any realistic meaning.” The CCP essentially abandoned any pretense that it would keep the promises it had made to Britain and the people of Hong Kong when the city was handed over.
(Oh dear - the Brit “Imperialists” have kept their word and handed over the city to Beijing as they promised 100 years ago to do! And yet Beijing Butchers figure the life of a Beijing govt issued promise - MADE TO BOTH Britain and to the people of Hong Kong - is 20 years - at best!
In 2019, Hong Kong government tried to rush a new extradition bill through the legislature, which would have allowed Hong Kong to surrender anyone wanted by Beijing based on trumped-up charges, including critics of Beijing, pro-democracy activists, and human rights activists. Hong Kong chief Carrie Lam only withdrew the bill after several months of mass protests, which eventually turned into violent confrontations between some young protesters and Hong Kong police. Beijing warned protesters it would take revenge.
(In other words Hong Kong wants to have at least a shadow of the same rights we Cdns enjoy! How galling that must be for the Beijing Butchers - that Chinese citizens who have lived under the “Imperialist” system and then under Communism - want to engage in MASS PROTESTS at risk of life and limb - just to save a little portion of the “Imperialist” legal rights we Cdns take almost entirely for granted! We Cdns are so smug that over 55% cannot be bothered to vote!)
While the rest of the world is struggling to contain a virus that originated in China, Hong Kong authorities arrested a number of prominent pro-democracy activists for their roles in the 2019 anti-extradition bill protests.
(Chinese food markets are vast swamps of infection from un-hygienic food handling! Chinese food markets have already produced SARS, Swine Flu, Bird Flu and now Wuhan Virus! We have been fortunate in AVOIDING major Pandemics up till now! There is ample reason to believe that unless China gets SERIOUS about cleaning up its food production - which it had PROMISED TO DO and then reneged on - then we will see MORE PANDEMICS emerging from China!)
Beijing appointed hardliner Xia Baolong as the new director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office this year. Xia openly condemned Hong Kong’s pro-democracy lawmakers for filibustering bills Beijing wants to pass. In a recent dramatic scene, a few of those lawmakers Xia condemned were dragged out of the legislative council during a debate about a bill that would criminalize any disrespectful action toward the Chinese national anthem.
Now the CCP has decided the time is right to bypass Hong Kong's legislature and impose a national security law on Hong Kong, banning “treason, secession, sedition and subversion.” The law is so broadly defined and vaguely worded, it will greatly expand the CCP's control over the city by criminalizing Hong Kongers for exercising their basic rights to free speech and assembly. Beijing also announced it would send security agents to Hong Kong to help enforce the law.
(Ah yes- the standard Soviet Socialist response to any critic is to accuse them of TREASON! And yet Our idiot Boy Justin ADMIRES this “basic democracy” and he also “likes the way the Chinese get things done”! At least Trump sees the Chinese Soviet threat - replete with slave labour camps - for what it is!)
Beijing's action and announcement have drawn international outcry and condemnation. As Pompeo said in a statement, "No reasonable person can assert today that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China, given facts on the ground," and, "It is now clear that China is modeling Hong Kong after itself."
Why should the U.S. care about the situation in Hong Kong? The 1992 United States-Hong Kong Policy Act obligates the U.S. to “promote Hong Kong’s prosperity, autonomy, and way of life.”
Hong Kong and the U.S. have long-established ties, and Hong Kong’s past autonomy enables it to enjoy special economic and trade treatment from the states. Hong Kong alone was the U.S.'s 10th-largest export market, and the city received more than $80 billion in U.S. foreign direct investment as of 2017. According to the State Department, “There are more than 1,300 U.S. firms, including 726 regional operations, and approximately 85,000 American residents in Hong Kong.”
Last year, Congress passed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act (HRDA), which requires the State Department to evaluate whether Hong Kong is still upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights. HRDA also requires the secretary of state to annually certify to Congress whether the city still warrants special treatment, different from mainland China, under various treaties and agreements.
(The Beijing Butchers have also made noises recently about FORCEFULLY re-taking Taiwan into the Butchers political control! Fortunately - the Taiwan military is large enough that such a violent option would be VERY COSTLY! The people of Taiwan LIKE their western style life and civil rights!)
