Tehran Times Opinion Column, Jan. 24 Breaking the cycle of violence TEHRAN, Jan. 24 (MNA) -- The sectarian violence in Iraq has reached a dangerous level and it must be reined in at all costs. The situation must not be allowed to get out of control because the sectarian strife could escalate into endless revenge attacks. Just on Monday, bombs in marketplaces killed dozens of civilians and injured many more in a Shia neighborhood in Baghdad.

The rival Iraqi political camps should set aside their differences for the sake of the people and just focus on the security of Iraqi citizens. They can discuss their differences at a later date when a semblance of normal life returns to Iraq. Regional countries should ignore their short-term interests and extend their hands to help the Iraqi government and nation in their hour of need.

However, the cycle of violence in Iraq is finally becoming a matter of grave concern for neighboring countries.

In light of their familiarity with the nuances of Iraq, regional countries could also send peacekeeping troops to the country under the mandate of the United Nations. This proposal would surely be welcomed by the Iraqi people and government.

Any conscientious person anywhere in the world who sees the terrible scenes in Iraq cannot help feeling despair for the state of humanity and curses those behind such savage acts.

Sectarian violence is one of the great banes of history.

Any person, whether a religious or tribal leader, inside or outside Iraq, who tries to fan the flames of sectarian strife in the crisis-stricken country should be called a criminal who is manipulating the sentiments of ignorant people.

Pitting one person against another because of his or her beliefs runs contrary to all divine principles and humanitarian values.

What is the sin of a child born in Iraq that he or she should fall victim to such barbaric acts? What is the sin of his/her family that they should leave their home in fear of sectarian violence? What is the sin of an Iraqi woman who is not sure she will come back home if she goes to the market to buy something to feed her family?

Iraq shows that there is no military solution to the problem.

Today, it is the duty of intellectuals, religious and political officials, and journalists to teach Iraqis that they should renounce senseless violence.

They should inform the Iraqis that the world had been waiting to see how they would act after the fall of the brutal dictator Saddam Hussein.

Iraqis should behave in such a way so as to definitively disprove the slanderous propaganda of those who say the Iraqis deserved a leader like Saddam Hussein.

Today, the Iraqis and their leaders are facing a great test.

They must inform the world that the perpetrators of these killings are enemies of humanity and their actions are violations of the tenets of all divine religions. They should show that no one should be killed because he is a Shia or a Sunni.

They should show the world that their country is the cradle of civilization and that sectarian violence is anathema to a cultured people.

MS/HG
END
MNA

Why should it be for them and not for Canada or the United States?

Violence war and destruction are what mankind is most profficient at doing...

Yeah we could all be farmers but where's the fun in that?

Ah, all the things that SHOULD be done. If only it were as simple as writing an article. But, perhaps it will strike up more conversation within their country.

Its so nice to even "read" something that makes so much sense, even if we know it won't
turn into reality on the ground.
At least someone is saying it, and good for them, especially from that part of the world.
It makes me perk up and take notice, as we are given so much negativity concerning that
area , it brings us to a point that we don't think, they think "sensibly about getting
along with each other" at all. And, it seems strange that there was no mention of the U.S.
at all.
That is good, as they should now begin repairing all of their problems with "each other" and
get down to "really living", simple everyday lives, so they can enjoy life again, or for the
first time.
They have a government now, if they all pull together, it can work, and for heavens sake,
start getting along with each other, then those u.s. soldiers can go home and leave you alone.

Your last sentence Illustrates the problem of the conflict in the region the first part of your sentence cannot become reality while the second half is reality.
Isn't it peculiar that the self proclaimed brokers of peace in the region are at the same time the formost brokers of weapons and thier delivery?
The present sectarian violence in Iraq serves only the Empire, they paid for it ,fomented it, and promote it every day.

In that melting pot of turmoil the author forgets the US ingredient. It is like telling a man and wife to settle their differences while a lion is in their living room. While the hated Americans are accepted by one faction in Iraq, there will never be peace there. The US thinks it can reap the honour of a peacemaker, and to repeat the WW2 Japanese situation, but that won't work with these people.

The US should forget about the oil and get out. Then some form of settlement can be formulated.
