According to this article, the federal government spends 60% of the Canada Day Budget in Québec. It is explain by the lack of external revenues to support Canada's Day. People are far more interested to invest in the real party, Québec's day, than Canada Day. And it's not something new from 2005 and the scandal here, it was always like that!

There is even more shocking: federal doesn't ask anything about the results of the Canada Day in Québec. They say in the article that the federal doesn't even bother to know if it was a success or not.

And by the way, PLQ just cut Québec's St-Jean Baptiste budget by 18%. Everybody in Québec knows that the big party is on 24 of June, Québec's St-Jean Baptiste, and that 1 of July is everything but a party ; in fact, it's the day people move.

The point is, they spend 60% of Canada's Day budget in Québec and there is almost no control at all over it. Look at what they do with money (Gomery) that is supposed to be controled, and imagine what they do with money they don't want to control.

And if it wasn't legislated that July 1 was the day that most rental contracts expire, do you think that it would be a bigger party day than it is now?

Good point, Doc.

It'd be nice if they some more out here though...maybe they could buy us all 18 Canadian so we each get a free shirt. ;-)

Maybe its time Quebec got nothing for Canada day we have a great party here in Kamloops on July 1 and some more money for it sure wouldn't hurt

A free shirt would be nice, but a couple fireworks down by the river would be far cooler ;)

Why spend all that money if no one is going to attend? I wonder what the press would say if all rental contracts expired on 5 May or 24 June instead?

We already have fireworks though. Actually, I already have shirts too...many of which came free in beer boxes.

Hmmm...maybe we need something new and innovative.

Maybe we could spend it moving the lease-expiry day?

Come on, it's only a tiny fraction of people that moves on the 1 of July! I was only saying that the 1 of July in Québec is more known under the day people move instead of Canada Day. Next time I'll be careful with my words.

It's not because rental contract ends on 1st of July that people don't attend Canada Day events in Québec.

But you don't know. Why you don't know? Because you don't want to know. The articles says that the federal doesn't want to know how many people attend, the level of attachement toward thoses events, the level of proudness people feel toward their country, neither the knowledge or comprehension of what is Canada.

You need those basic informations to evaluate a program!

But I know people here understand why there is no evaluation.

I thought Quebecers celebrated Jean Baptiste (SP??) Day, not Canada Day? There usually isn't much going on in Hull Canada Day, c'ept the sale of alcohol to those under 19, and Ontarians who missed the LCBO the day before. JBD rocks on the Quebec side though...............so I've heard. :D

It's so crazy that this year, Loco Locass, Cowboy Fringants, Dumas and a lots of other decided to say F-U to the governement and made their own Saint-Jean Baptiste show. We "celebrate" both SJB and Canada Day, June 24 and July 1st, SJB is our national day, Québec's Day if you want. It will be in Montréal the 24 of June at 1pm until, like they say, the later they can. 20$ for student and 30$ for the rest. They expect more than 30 000 people (they have a limit!), and it's probably already sold out. I already have my ticket though. This will be the most EXTREMELY political event people have seen in years in the whole Canada.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste is crazy over here. And by the way, alchool law are very different in Québec!!! Liquors are controled by SAQ, a LCBO like, and beer wine and the rest is sold in convenient and grocery store everyday until 11pm. So there is no problem for alcool here!!
And even our SAQ is open on week end. There is even SAQ Express which is open till 11pm.

I hope you got my point: people are willing to pay to access a Saint-Jean Baptiste exterior show!!! Can you say the same about Canada Day? I really don't think so!

LOL. If people from the ROC find out about how much Quebecers drink beer, we would all be considered alcholics! But this is a another debate ;)

Exactly ;)

But I really don't follow the rule: I drink Budweiser (not all the time, but mainly) instead of Labatt Blue, and I drink Coke instead of Pepsi ;)

Wow, you're a rebel. Don't worry, I won't tell. :D

I prefer anything by Sleemans, except for their lager - bleh!
