July 24, 2026: BISONS HAVE A HAT-TRICK OF STORIES

Three recruits previously announced on Elite Prospects and the LOI registry now have press release stories and flashy new pictures. All three are accustomed to skating around with a trophy. I have prior posts on all (from July 1st & 8th) which contain links and background material, which I will not repeat here.

LIAM LONGO - D - Toronto Patriots (OJHL)

Here's the website caption:
A two-way defenceman, Longo contributed 20 points in 45 OJHL games. He was even more dynamic in the playoffs, helping the Patriots to a conference title and berth at nationals for the first time in 12 years with ten points in 20 games.

Links:
➤ GoBisons.ca: Buckland Cup Champ Liam Longo commits to Manitoba

COLE UNGER - D - Melfort Mustangs (SJHL)

Unlike the others listed today, Unger won his SJHL titles in 2024 and 2025. Here's his caption:
Over three seasons with Melfort, Unger advanced to the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) national championship twice, competing for the Centennial Cup in both 2024 and 2025 following league titles in the SJHL. During two runs to the final of the CJHL’s most prestigious tournament, Unger recorded three points over ten total games.

➤ GoBisons: Two-time SJHL champion Cole Unger chooses Manitoba

NOAH LODOEN - F - Toronto Patriots (OJHL)

Lodoen's caption is brief:
Lodoen is the second member of the Toronto Patriots to sign with Manitoba, alongside defenceman Liam Longo

After issuing a story announcing the end of a 13-man recruiting class, the Banjo-Cats have one more kitten in the litter. Here's the details, in the form of the above omnibus post of CW recruits to date:

Braydan Smith - D - Blackfalds Bulldogs (BCHL) [prior: Nanaimo, Victoria, & Trail (BCHL), Des Moines (USHL)]
Link: Braydan Smith - Stats, Contract, Salary & More
BCHL: 110 GP, 3 G, 13 A, 16 Pts

August 6, 2026: STORIES AROUND THE CW

Calgary, MacEwan, and Mount Royal issued press release stories this week, and the Bisons got another story from local press. They are sure getting a lot of such stories this off-season. The story about goaltender Austin Dubinsky and is from The Carillon (from Steinbach) and the picture is from the Centennial Cup semi-final where Niverville beat Canmore, AB.

Links:
➤ The Carillon: Dubinsky commits to University of Manitoba

After goaltender Carl Stankowski left the Town of Bedrock for Scotland the Brave, forward Mack Stewart is off to the Stuttgart Rebels of the Oberliga Süd which is Germany's third tier. A few years back the Bisons played teams from Germany's second tier.

Links:
➤ GoDinos.com: Stewart goes pro with Stuttgart Rebels in Germany

The Family Guys have announced their 9th recruit, who's also listed at Elite Prospects. Here's the summary in the format of the Transactions Summary above:

Sam Ward - D - Flin Flon (SJHL) [prior: Swift Current & Wenatchee (WHL), Vernon & Victoria (BCHL)]
Link: Sam Ward - Stats, Contract, Salary & More
WHL: 92 GP, 4 G, 12 A, 16 Pts
BCHL: 71 GP, 5 G, 20 A, 25 Pts
SJHL: 35 GP, 8 G, 15 A, 23 Pts

Links:
➤ MacEwan: Griffins net strong puck-moving D-man Ward off SJHL champion Flin Flon Bombers

The pipeline to Europe continues to flow with CW graduates. Josh Tarzwell is leaving the Bluegars to take the high road to the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lormond. He might be willing to skate 500 miles, and even 500 more, but I would recommend that he take a plane. The Bisons once faced the Glasgow Clan on a tour of their own.

Prior to this announcement, they had just four recruits (a goaltender and three defencemen) confirmed by themselves and Elite Prospects. It seems that there are large numbers of recruits this year in the CW:
Regina - 13
Alberta - 12
Manitoba - 10
MacEwan - 9
U.B.C. - 9
Mount Royal - 8
Calgary - 6
Saskatchewan - 6
Trinity - 5

August 13, 2026: CWTV SUBSCRIPTIONS NOW AVAILABLE

The CanadaWest.TV early bird pricing ends on August 16th. It is hard to find out about this. Two years ago, I missed all notifications and had to renew at full price. The CW used to put up a notice at each sport's page, and each CW team in each sport put up a notice as well. They didn't even send out an email to past subscribers. You have to go to CanadaWest.TV and click on "PASSES". It will take you to the link. They have all sports (which includes playoffs), sport-specific, and per game passes as well.

Links:
➤ CanadaWest.tv: https://canadawest.tv/packages

The Family Guys' 2026-27 Roster Page is now active, but does not include any new recruits. On the chance that this is a "work-in-progress" I will delay the roster breakdown for now.

August 20, 2026: HALL OF FAME CONNECTION & MACEWAN'S ROSTER RELEASED

A new Bison recruit has the unique honour of a Hockey Hall of Fame connection before even playing a game in the CW. Hayden Wheddon has had the helmet he wore in the Niverville Nighthawks' run to the Centennial Cup on display at the HHOF. He was the MJHL's leading scorer with 90 points in 57 games.

Last week, I pointed out that the Family Guys had activated their 2026-27 roster page. However, it only had the returning players. They have now added their recruits. They get credit for being the second CW team to do so, after Regina. The stats for the conference-wide recruits are from the post dated July 14, 2026 and there was an update in a post on August 6, 2026.

Goaltenders:
Returning:
1 Zac Onyskiw G (5-7-1, 4.24 GAA, .859 S%)
35 Carson Ironside G (3-1-0, 2.48 GAA, .921 S%)

Arrivals:
29 Colin Reay - G - Prince George (BCHL)

The Family Guys had a rotation of hot-cold cycles throughout the season in their net. Eric Ward had been their #1, but Onyskiw took over from him, only to have 3rd-stringer Ironside come up with some hot games. He made a case, no doubt argued by Perry Mason, to be their playoff starter.

Defencemen:
Returning:
4 Carson Haynes D (10-0-1-1)
16 Jack Parker D (14-0-1-1)
20 Dylan Bidyk D (17-0-1-1)
21 Tyson Kowaluk D (27-0-6-6)

Arrivals:
6 Reid Larson D - Canmore (AJHL)
7 Jack Franklin D - Simon Fraser (Indy/NCAA2)
26 Casey Black D - Canmore (AJHL)
93 Sam Ward D - Flin Flon (SJHL)

The big problem for MacEwan this year could be getting goals from their blueline. Their departed players finished 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 23, and 27 in team scoring last year. That's pretty good. However, that includes their top four offensive defencemen, including Keaton Dowhaniuk who has transferred to UBC. Not one of the four returning blueliners scored a goal last year. The recruits do not appear to be offensive-minded.

Forwards:
Returning:
9 Rhett Dekowny F (26-1-8-9)
10 Ethan Sundar F (27-10-16-26)
11 Tanner Fincaryk F (15-1-1-2)
12 Myles Gauld F (28-8-10-18)
17 Blake Eastman F (2-0-0-0)
18 Kadyn Chabot F (27-18-19-37)
19 Liam Hughes F (25-8-4-12)
22 Vincent Scott F (22-8-14-22)
23 Sam Simard F (28-12-16-28)
91 Ethan Mercer F (25-0-4-4)
96 Carter Chorney F (25-5-5-10)

Arrivals:
13 Evan Sundar F - Vernon (BCHL)
15 Zach Coutu F - Trail (BCHL)
25 John Szabo F - Canmore (AJHL)
27 Walker Erickson F - Simon Fraser (Indy/NCAA2)
44 Garrett Thom F - West Kelowna (BCHL)

The Mythical Mutants return their top five scorers from a year ago. Although there are no stand-out recruits, they should easily replace the departed players. They have 16 forwards on the roster, so those selected to dress should be as good as last year's line-up.

There is one new name on the roster, never previously listed at Elite Prospects or anywhere else that I noticed. Here is his stats line in the format of the Transactions Summary above:

Zach Coutu - F - Trail (BCHL) [prior: Canmore (AJHL)]
Link: Zachary Coutu - Stats, Contract, Salary & More
BCHL: 75 GP, 18 G, 49 A, 67 Pts
AJHL: 76 GP, 19 G, 31 A, 60 Pts

The U-Sports pre-season kicks off tomorrow when the Saskatchewan Huskies will culturally enrich Austria with a healthy dose of banjo music. Neither the U of S site, nor the Huskie Fan site, have an update on this tour nor have they posted their 2026-27 roster.

The Banjo-Mutts are taking part in a 4-team tournament for the Wellcard Trophy, which is translated as the "Corrugated Card Trophy" when the German language stories in the links are translated by my app. The wording in those stories often sounds kind of funny, but is amusing and informative.

The entire tournament is being held in Klagenfurt, Austria. All three Sask opponents play in the ICE (International Central European) Hockey League. It is based in Austria and was formerly called the EBEL. It has nine teams from Austria, three from Italy, and one each from Hungary and Slovenia, for a total of 14. It is Europe's 6th-ranked league and this gives them three berths in Europe's Champions Hockey League. Teams from the countries involved have come-and-gone over the years. Unlike North America, cross-border leagues in Europe have many regulatory hurdles to overcome from national regulatory bodies.

The Milano team is new this year, and rises from the ashes of past teams which operated in Italy's Series A and other leagues. At one time, they were supposedly trying to get a franchise in the KHL.

August 26, 2026: THE MUTTS ARE YODELLING IN AUSTRIA

Quick Summary
Sask: Stebbings (12:48 1st), Yaremko (12:35 2nd), Bertholet (0:44 3rd), Sorensen (1:41 3rd)
Vienna: Gersich (13:50 1st)
Goal: Sask: Maier (? shots, ? saves), Vienna: Zimmerman, Setzinger (? shots, ? saves)

Well, the puck has dropped and the Banjo-Mutts wracked up a tidy victory. Banjos and yodelling abound!

They don't keep track of shots on goal over there. The linked summary provided by the ICEHLis the best, and includes Sask's line-up. This was Vienna's 3rd game already. They are now 0-2-1. They lost 6-5 in OT to Slovan Bratislava (from Slovakia) and 6-2 to Ceske Budejovice (from Czechia). Both of those are well-known clubs in Europe.

August 27, 2026: BACK-TO-BACK WINS FOR BANJO-MUTTS

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 6
MILANO H.C. 5

Links:
➤ ICEHL: Summary
➤ Milano H.C.: Team Website (under construction) : Facebook
➤ Sask: Schedule/Results

Quick Summary
Milan: Houde (2:30 2nd), Pietroniro (3:01 2nd), Grant (6:54, 2nd), McKegg (15:00 2nd), Hannoun (3:16 3rd)
Sask: Keeler (3:36 2nd), Sorensen (8:16 2nd), Bertholet (12:10 2nd), Pelletier (1:44 3rd),
Dureau (7:42 3rd), Kosior (13:15, 3rd)
Goal: Sask: Thomson (? shots, ? saves), Milan: Berti (? shots, ? saves)

As mentioned after the last game, the shots on goal are not tracked in Austria (at least in exhibition games). However, Sask trailed the whole game until their 3rd period rally. The line-ups are the summary link. They dressed 21 for this game. The back-up goalie for both games was James Venne, who played one game last year. Their 2026-27 roster page has yet to be updated.

The Mutts have to be happy with two wins in Austria thus far. If Klagenfurt could beat Vienna on Friday, then Sunday’s game would be for the tournament title. Klagenfurt had the best 2025-26 record of Sask’s three opponents.

Up next:
Friday, August 28: Klagenfurt v Vienna (19:15, 11:15 CDT)
Saturday, August 29: Milano v Vienna (16:00, 8:00 CDT)
Sunday, August 30: Klagenfurt v Saskatchewan (17:30, 9:30 CDT)

Quick Summary
not available

This was a big win for Sask and adds a lot of credibility for the CW and USports. No doubt the Banjo-Mutts were soaking the fire hydrants in Austria tonight!

The ICE HL website is undergoing renovations, so the summary is not currently available. But I have inserted the links I could find. The translated game story from Klagenfurt sounds funny but that kind of quirkiness is, to me at least, an enjoyable unique feature of these games.

The Klagenfurt line-up is pretty strong. They qualified for the European Champions Cup this year. Their Canadian imports are:

Matt Fraser: 87 GP in NHL, 246 GP in AHL (including Manitoba Moose), 265 GP in WHL;
Jacob Hudson: 137 GP in ECHL; 74 GP in AUS (with St. F.X.); 218 GP in QMJHL;
Nick Petersen: 112 GP in AHL; 69 GP in ECHL; 178 GP in QMJHL;
Travis St. Denis: 290 GP in AHL; 162 GP in NCAA.

They all have good stats on their resumes, available at the link from Elite Prospects.

September 1, 2026: NEWS AROUND THE CW

There was no game between the Bisons and Moose on the Bison schedule, and the Moose have confirmed that no such game(s) will be played this year. The Moose face the Iowa Wild in the Twin Cities on Sept 25-26.

Links:
➤ Global News: Manitoba Moose announce pre-season schedule

The CW announced their Hall of Fame inductees. Pertaining to hockey, former Saskatchewan coach (and Team Canada Junior coach and NHL coach) Dave King was selected. Pertaining to the Bisons, their 1990-92 women’s volleyball team was selected.

When I delved into the Family Guys’ roster on August 20, 2026, I had not saved the link for their story on Zach Coutu. I covered his stats back then, but the story link is here today.

Links:

Although Holy Trinity hasn’t issued any sort of story this off-season, and were the last ones to update their Schedule & Results page, they are one of the first to release a roster page.

Goaltenders (4)
Returning
31 Cole Savage (1-1-1, 5.66 GAA, .861 S%)
35 Raphael Audet (1-8-2, 4.62, .905 S%)

Arrivals
1 Carter Capton - Victoria (BCHL), Camrose (AJHL)
90 Steven Bacovsky - Simon Fraser (Indy/NCAA2)

Audet and the departed Leon Sommer more-or-less split the duties. Trinity’s goaltenders are often bombarded with shots so it is typically required to rotate goaltenders. Audet’s .905 S% behind that team is pretty impressive.

Defencemen (10)
Returning
6 Eduard Wruck (27-0-3-3)
8 Samuel May (28-0-0-0)
15 Adam Leitch (24-0-3-3)
25 Tristan Serrao (19-0-3-3)
28 Ricards Landmanis (28-2-4-6)
94 Zack Whittaker (28-1-9-10)

Arrivals
2 Riley Joslin - Wisconsin Windigo (NAHL)
4 Quinn Abbott - Camrose (AJHL)
20 Nicco Camazzola - Simon Fraser (Indy/NCAA2)
-- Jackson Foster - Portage College (ACAC)

The good news is that Trinity is losing just four skaters, two defencemen. And those two defenceman had ZERO points last year. So their defence should be at least as good as it was a year ago. Problem is, they gave up 144 goals in 28 regular season games last year. That was last in the CW.

Forwards (20)
Returning
7 Matteo Lamoureux (25-3-2-5)
10 Lleyton Shearon (28-2-3-5
11 Matthias Bessey (27-1-4-5)
17 Artem Hrabovetskyi (26-8-8-16)
19 Mikhailo Simchuk (28-16-14-30)
21 Cyprus Davis (18-0-2-2)
22 Damiano Metastasio (17-1-0-1)
23 Yuji Akimoto (2024-25: 8-0-3-3)
24 Danylo Korzhyletskyi (10-4-11-15)
26 Nathan Ayotte (15-0-0-0)
27 Connor Farren (27-4-5-9)
44 McLaren Paulsen (15-0-2-2)
91 Christian Lowe (26-11-19-30)
93 Aiden Knutson (28-8-2-10)

Arrivals
9 Jacksenn Hungle - Calgary (CW)
16 Matthew Edwards - Melville (SJHL)
18 Brayden Sinclair - Trail (BCHL)
-- Cody Walker - Lebanon Valley (NCAA3), Birmingham (SPHL)
-- John Desabrais - Williams Lake (KIJHL)
-- Nabeel Moledina - Langley (PIJHL)

The two forwards they lost were 4th and 9th in team scoring. The roster they have posted could be just a training camp roster because it includes 34 names and several players have not been assigned numbers. This squad has three forwards who were better than a point-per-game. Lowe, Simchuk, and Korzhyletskyi are blue-chip players by any measure. It is not unreasonable to think that the other 11 returnees will collectively surpass last year’s scoring totals. They also got Hungle to ditch the Dinos and move west.

The Elite Prospects list of recruits for 2026-27 includes just six names, with Brayden Sinclair being new. The players whose numbers were not posted on July 14, 2026 are:
