September 13, 2024: Bisons Sit Out the First Big Friday Night

The Bisons had one last night of rest before heading to Saskatown for a game on Saturday, and Regina for a game on Sunday. This was a night of one-sided games. A portent of things to come?

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 9
REGINA COUGARS 1
(at Big River First Nation)

➤ UofS: Schedule & Results

This Battle-of-Banjoland was on neutral ground, on the Big River First Nation. They have a two-year old arena called the Jim Neilson Sports Complex. It looks like a nice rink, surely better than the small town rinks of the past. No stats on this one, but the Canines must have dominated the Felines. Sask is now 2-1-0 and this was Regina’s first game.

Quick Summary
Mac: B. Tallman (12:34 3rd)
Alta: A. Thacker (00:21 1st) , T. Preziuso (07:53 1st) , A. Thacker (13:26 1st) , J. Prokop (19:56 1st) , J. Hall (01:37 2nd) , A. Thacker (07:03 2nd) , M. Ward (14:58 2nd) , B. MacGregor (08:37 3rd)
Goal: Mac: Ward L (33 shots, 26 saves) Epp (18 shots, 17 saves); Alta: Palmer (21 shots, 20 saves)

This wasn’t on CWTV, but at least the U of A is diligent about uploading games to live stats. The Evil Monkeys had period leads of 4-0 and 7-0. The Family Guys will blame Meg. Although, this was Alberta’s 4th game and Mac’s 1st of this pre-season.

This one was streamed on YouTube. The T-irds led 1-0 after the 1st, and 4-3 after the 2nd. The goaltenders would like to erase the tape of that 2nd period. This game looked very “exhibitiony”. SFU has no Schedule & Results page, hence no boxscore availability as is the case with regular BCIHL teams. This was the opener for both sides.

September 14: MORE ROSTER NEWS

Before I update the evening results, there is even more roster news for the Herd. The Bisons updated their roster page today. There were two more additions, both of whom are CW transfers. One went to high school at Shaftesbury and the other right beside at St. Paul’s, both just south of the Zoo!

MITCHELL JOSS - F - Trinity Western (CWUAA)

Joss is a Winnipegger coming home. He shoots right and usually plays the wing. He is the Shaftesbury grad of the latest additions. He started his junior career in Dauphin. His junior stats peaked in 2020 when he had 71 points in 57 games for the Winnipeg Blues in the MJHL. During the Covid season, he had just 6 games in the NAHL, then it was off to Sherwood Park of the AJHL in 2021-22, where he had 50 points in 58 games. He played the last two seasons with Holy Trinity, amassing a respectable 25 points in 55 games. In comparison, Jonny Hooker and Hayden Ostir are the only Bison returnees with superior offensive stats in the CW.

COLBY JAQUET - D - Saskatchewan (CWUAA)

Jaquet is a right-shooting defenceman who had 11 points in 12 games for the Banjo-Mutts a year ago. This is the St. Paul’s grad of the pair. He played for the Selkirk Steelers and Dauphin Kings in the MJHL. In his last junior season (2021-22), he wore an “A” for Dauphin and had 62 points in 54 regular season games, 16 points in 18 playoff games, and 5 points in 5 games in the Centennial Cup. He is now one of the We Three Kings on the blueline, with Parker Malchuk and Owen Wareham also grads of the Dauphin Kings.

There were also a lot of number changes from the CW and LeagueStat data:

Veterans (19)
4 Parker Malchuk D
5 Brandon Casey D
6 Lucas Fry D
8 Evan Toth D
10 Josh Paulhus F
11 Hayden Ostir F
12 Cameron Trimble F
13 Andre Sutter F
14 Riley Zimmerman F
18 Jonny Hooker F
19 Jackson Arpin F
24 Owen Wareham D
25 Kian Calder D
26 Andrew Boucher F
27 Ryan Gottfried D
28 Codey Behun F
29 Michael King F
30 Kolby Thornton G
34 Ross Hawryluk G

Rookies and Transfers (11)
2 Dexter Whittle D - Everett Silvertips (WHL)
3 Colby Jaquet D - Saskatchewan (CWUAA)
9 Eric Alarie F - Moose Jaw & Seattle (WHL) and Adirondack (ECHL)
15 Ben Bonni D - Spokane Chiefs (WHL)
16 Mitchell Joss F - Trinity Western (CWUAA)
17 Skyler Bruce F - Vancouver & Edmonton (WHL)
20 Caden Zaplitny F - Everett Silvertips (WHL)
21 Dawson Pasternak F - Victoria Royals (WHL)
22 Riley Stotts F - Calgary (CWUAA)
23 Grady Lane F - Victoria Royals (WHL) and Virden Oil Capitals (MJHL)
35 Braden Holt G - Victoria Royals (WHL)

A roster of 30 would be larger than the usual 25 or 26 carried in past seasons. Will some returnees be moved to the taxi squad? I don’t see any of the recruits or transfers being healthy-scratched from a regular season game-day roster.

September 14, 2024: BISONS EDGED IN SASKATOWN

MANITOBA BISONS 1
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2

Links:
➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW
➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW
➤ UofM: Schedule & Results
➤ UofS: Schedule & Results

Quick Summary
Man: J. Arpin (17:13 3rd)
Sask: C. Petruic (14:59 2nd), L. Keeler (09:10 3rd)
Goal: Man: Thornton (40 shots, 38 saves); Sask: Kooy (21 shots, 20 saves)

I had planned on an evening of streaming this game and the Goldeyes’ baseball game on alternative screens, but this one was dropped from the CWTV broadcast schedule. (I did see the afternoon football, though.) At least they updated the live links to LeagueStat and the CW Hockey Tech page. (See the links.) I have always preferred LeagueStat, but the new “Game Centre” format at Hockey Tech is nice when following out-of-town games in progress.

The Bisons gave some ice time to their “bubble” players. Kolby Thornton went the distance in goal, and stopped 38 of 40 shots. He was backed up by newcomer Braden Holt. Last year’s backup, Ross Hawryluk, did not suit up.

The scratched veterans were: Parker Malchuk D, Evan Toth D, Josh Paulhus F, Hayden Ostir F, Jonny Hooker F, Ryan Gottfried D.

The scratched newcomers were: Colby Jaquet D, Mitchell Joss F, and Dawson Pasternak F.

The veterans who dressed were: Brandon Casey D, Lucas Fry D, Cameron Trimble F, Andre Sutter F, Riley Zimmerman F, Jackson Arpin F, Owen Wareham D, Kian Calder D, Andrew Boucher F, Codey Behun F, and Michael King F.

The newcomers who dressed were: Dexter Whittle D, Eric Alarie F, Ben Bonni D, Skyler Bruce F, Caden Zaplitny F, Riley Stotts F, and Grady Lane F.

The scratched veterans were the ones who had the most ice time last year. I do not know what the pairings and line combos were.

Sask is now 3-1-0, and the Bisons are 0-1-0.

The Family Guys did not upload this to LeagueStat or CW Hockey Tech. Alberta’s site links a story on Billy Moores’ CW Hall of Fame induction. The Apes are now 3-2-0 and MacEwan is 0-2-0.

I just discovered that this game was moved to Friday. I have nothing but the score. Neither side has a 2024-25 roster posted. Mount Royal is 1-1-0 (with two cancellations) and Calgary is 2-1-0.

The Banjo-Cats used to stock up on recruits from the SJHL. Not so much this year. They do have three recruits from state-side, though. There is a big turnover on defence. On paper, the players recruited seem to be equivalent to those they are replacing. But so many rookie blue-liners could be a problem.

The Monkeys’ Elite Prospects page has just seven of the ten new recruits listed on their team page. All names were added on the Roster page of their website. On paper, the Apes should be stronger this year. They return most of the top players and the recruits are highly touted. Thus far, all I saw were a game against Carleton and highlights against the Belfast Giants. They seemed a bit weak in front of their own net, IMO.

September 15, 2024: BISONS WINLESS TREK THROUGH BANJOLAND

REGINA COUGARS 6

➤ UofR: Schedule & Results

All that the Banjo-Cats posted on this was the following Tweet (at 12:52 pm Monday):
6-2 non-conference win over Manitoba last night in Wilcox!

Two goals by Eric Pearce and Turner McMillen, Eric Houk, Paycen Bjorklund, and Logan Barlage all scored one. Jackson Fellner and Adam Evanoff split the netminding duties.

Thanks for hosting us, @NDHoundsHockey

The Bisons have nothing up yet. The start time and location for this game were moved, announced on social media only with the picture below. It is a bit annoying that teams do not update their website first. I am planning on being at the rematch double-header between these sides on Friday and Saturday. So there will be some kind of report.

BASEBALL NOTE:
The Goldeyes were also swept on the weekend, losing 2-1 in 11 innings and then 1-0. They need to win the remaining three games of the cham[pionship series, slated for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

FOOTBALL NOTE:
The Bisons beat the Evil Monkeys 24-23 in a battle for first place. That’s a 3-0 start for the Herd. The Apes could have tied the game late in the 4th quarter, but went for a 2-point convert.

I do not expect there to be any preview stories posted. Thus far, there are no live links pending for any CW games this coming weekend. God willing, I shall be at both games this weekend and plan on providing summaries with rosters and observations. The Bisons suffered a 6-2 loss to the Banjo-Cats last weekend. This after the Banjo-Mutts beat them 9-1 and the Bisons 2-1. I have no clue what sort of rosters lined-up against Regina.

Both games are slated to be streamed on SFU’s YouTube channel.

The Banjo-Mutts are involved in a 3-team round-robin against ACHA and ACAC competition, with games going Thursday through Saturday.

This is Minot’s opening series. In recent years they are 2-1-0 against Briercrest, and beat Regina last year. They are a highly ranked ACHA team, and usually qualify for the nationals.

Briercrest whipped Jamestown (a Minot rival in the ACHA) 6-1 and 10-2 last weekend. They are usually ACAC doormats but their program has really turned around the last two years. Last year they finished first in the regular season, but couldn’t get it done in the playoffs.

Sask is off to a good start, at 3-1-0 against CW opposition. At one time these games and their game with Manitoba last weekend were slated for CWTV. But as I post, these are no longer posted. I’ll check in later again.

September 20, 2024: MOUNT ROYAL & TRINITY ROSTER UPDATES

The Bluegars lost two of their top five players (Connor Blake and Jaden Senkoe). The recruiting class is not earth-shaking (two from the dub, four from Junior A, and one from a AA local league. With the return of Connor Bouchard (CW’s leading scorer with 57 points in 26 games), and Clay Hanus and Robbie Holmes both point-per-game players, they should be a strong team.

Holy Trinity is losing 5 of their top 10 scorers from a year ago. (It only took 7 points to get in that top 10!) Most of the recruits are Junior A and B players. Four players are listed at Elite Prospects but not on the official roster, all coming from non-Russian former parts of the USSR. Also, abused former Black Hawk Kyle Beach has retired and is now an assistant coach.

It has been a while since I went to the Dak for Friday night hockey. The evening got off to a shaky start when the music system crashed mid-way through O Canada. But the scoreboard and PA were working, and the game was pretty good for exhibition play, so one cannot complain.

The Bisons’ new line of Zaplitny - Stotts - Bruce was incredible. Bruce scored on the opening shift, and then again mid-1st period. Stotts scored the winner early in the 3rd period. I believe that each player on the line had 3 points.

The Bison 4th line (Zimmerman - Trimble - Boucher) got a lot of ice time, and looked pretty good. They did surrender the first Regina goal. They were putting pressure on the Banjo-Cats and after the goalie made his saves, they should have pressed for a face-off and line change. Instead, the Cats broke out and Matt Culling made it a 2-1 game. The Cats tied the game when defenceman Kian Calder bobbled a puck at the blueline and gave up a 2-on-1 breakaway, converted by Jackson Doucet.

After Stotts gave the Herd a 3-2 lead early in the 3rd, Parker Malchuk made it 4-2 when that 4th line was crashing the net. 4th liner Andrew Boucher had a couple of chances to score. A Cats’ turnover gave him a Showdown-in-the-NHL breakaway where he was foiled by goalie Jackson Fellner. He also hit the post on an attempted empty-netter.

Two Bison defencemen, Cody Jaquet and Ryan Gottfried, were not on the roster page. The Bisons need another high quality defenceman, IMO.

Both teans are now 1-2-0 heading into Saturday’s rubber match.

Beaver fans must be bitterly disappointed with this road-trip to Banjoland. After whipping Jamestown twice, and now Minot State, Briercrest could be ready to step up from ACHA competition and face the Banjo-Mutts on Saturday to wrap up this round-robin.

September 21, 2024: UGLY WINS ARE STILL WINS

REGINA COUGARS 7
MANITOBA BISONS 8
(in a shootout)

Links:
➤ UofM: Schedule & Results
➤ UofR: Schedule & Results

If you like goals, this was for you. The most disappointing thing was that the Bisons had few line-up changes. Brandon Casey replaced Lucas Fry on defence, the forward lines were the same as on Friday, and Ross Hawryluk started in goal, backed up by Kolby Thornton. Thus, there remain a host of new recruits whose play remains a mystery to me. I infer that there is an injury bug affecting the Bisons, otherwise they’d give everybody at least a game.

Regina had three unidentified players. They do not have names on jerseys yet, and had a goaltender wearing #30, a defenceman wearing #7, and a forward in #13, none of whom were listed on their roster page. I suppose it is possible that some players listed as “scratches” could have been cleverly disguised in those numbers. They also made some switches:

REGINA COUGARS
Goal:
30 ????? (35 Fellner)

Defence:
7 ????? - 5 Sass
16 Schmidt - 22 McNutt
10 Fishley - 28 Heward

Forwards:
17 McMillen - 14 Culling - 24 Wills
9 Shindle - 13 ????? - 11 Runke
29 Doucet - 23 Pearce - 15 Kesslering
18 Whyte - 21 -Borysiuk - 19 Bjorklund

Scratches:
G: 39 Evanoff
D: 3 Third - 4 Reimer - 20 Holoien - 44 Friedt-Mohr
F: 8 J Brook - 12 Houk - 27 Barlage - 32 Steele - 37 Belitsky

Not listed:
D: 2 A Brook

Goals by period:
UM 1 4 2 0 1- 8
UR 4 0 3 0 0 - 7

Shots by period:
UM 11 12 6 4 -33
UR 19 7 14 2- 42

Main observations:

1. The so-called 4th line remained intact (Zimmerman-Trimble-Boucher) and again were a pleasant surprise. Boucher notched a hat-trick, and had the final goal in the shoot-out. Last year, he had no goals and one assist in 19 games. Zimmerman had 3 goals and 1 assist in 24 games, and Trimble had 2 goals and 0 assists in 23 games.

2. The first line (Zaplitny-Stotts-Bruce) was once again dominant. They will be worth watching throughout the season.

3. Hawryluk appears to be #3 on the goaltender depth chart.

At times it was hard to make out the names of the goal-scorers over the PA, but here’s my best shot:

1st period:
Regina: 10 Fishley
Regina: 15 Kesslering
Manitoba: 11 Ostir
Regina: 18 Whyte (may be wrong name)
Regina: 19 Bjorklund

2nd period:
Manitoba: 17 Bruce (short-handed)
Manitoba: 15 Bonni (this was a wrap-around and they announced 11 Ostir instead)
Manitoba: 26 Boucher (tied the game)
Manitoba: 17 Bruce (5-on-3 powerplay)

3rd period:
Manitoba: 26 Boucher (on a centring pass)
Regina 17 McMillen (nobody on the Bisons played the body for a whole shift)
Manitoba: 26 Boucher (on a breakaway)
Regina: 11 Runke (just seconds after the 7-5 goal)
Regina: 14 Culling (with empty net where Zaplitny skated beside him without checking him, 27 seconds left)

Shootout:
Manitoba: 22 Stotts - saved
Regina: 23 Pearce - fanned and never got a shot on goal
Manitoba: 17 Bruce - scored
Regina: 29 Doucet - saved
Manitoba: 26 Boucher - scored

Thus, the Bisons are now 2-2-0 and Regina is 1-2-1.

Goal: Brier: Rattai (47 shots, 40 saves); Sask: Kooy (27 shots, 27 saves)

After both sides whipped Minot State, one could be forgiven for hoping that this would be a real battle. Instead, we got this. Sask is now 5-1-0 and Briercrest falls to 1-1-0 on the pre-season.

Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (36 shots, 30 saves); Alta: Kruger (33 shots, 26 saves)

The Evil Monkeys blew a 5-2 lead in this one, and needed a late goal to force overtime. The Dinos are now 4-1-0 and the Apes are 3-3-1. Yes, this is “only exhibition” but the folks in Saudi Alberta must have had higher hopes for that highly-touted recruiting class.

We are on the eve of the final pre-season week of exhibition/non-conference games. (And my last weekend with old and alternate logos!) After this there are still in-season exhibition/non-conference games, especially for the Bisons with seven such games.

The Bisons have lost four straight games to the former-Nor’westers, now Thunderwolves, over the last two seasons. In 2022 and 2023 the two teams had a 3-way round-robin with Regina in a GPAC-reunion weekend. In both seasons, the Herd had just one home weekend in the pre-season. (In addition to games against the Manitoba Moose.)

I would like to see some of the Bisons who were scratched twice last weekend hit the ice this weekend, and to see if defencemen Colby Jaquet and Ryan Gottfried are even on the roster. Both are listed at Elite Prospects, but not at GoBisons.ca.

Of those who played last weekend, the premium newcomer line of Zaplitny-Stotts-Bruce was extremely impressive, and the sophomore line of Zimmerman-Trimble-Boucher was beyond all hopes. Last year they combined for five goals and two assists. Boucher himself had a hat-trick last Saturday, and defenceman Parker Malchuk scored with that line on Friday. The assists on those four goals gave those players more points on one weekend than they had last year!

This series is on neutral ice, at the military establishment in Cold Lake, Alberta. There are no live links set up as I post. The pre-season records may be a bit deceiving. Against U-Sports teams, the Evil Monkeys are 3-2-1 and the Banjo-Mutts are 3-1-0. Nevertheless, the Monkeys have not been burying teams as many expected with their blue-ribbon recruiting class. Sask does not have a roster page up yet, but Elite Prospects has a 30-man roster listed for this year. I’ll have to break that down soon.

MACEWAN GRIFFINS (2023-24: 9-17-2, OHT 35 #23, 2024: 2-2-0)

While both sides are .500 so far, the Family Guys’ only wins were over Concordia-Edmonton of the ACAC. The Bluegars have already had two games cancelled, and last weekend’s series against Red Deer Poly was scrubbed altogether. This is a home-and-home.

REGINA COUGARS (2023-24: 6-20-2, OHT35 #27, 2024: 1-2-1)

In the Town of Bedrock, they have no roster page uploaded yet, and have just one player listed at Elite Prospects. However, the Monkeys uploaded the stats of their home game last weekend, so we know about 20 players on their roster. Hopefully we’ll get some updates before the weekend is out. Both sides opened their pre-season getting crushed by Sask, Calgary by 6-1 and Regina by 9-1. The Dinos have rallied with wins over Sask and MRU, and two wins over Alberta. Meanwhile, Regina went 1-1-1 against Manitoba.

The T-irds host Holy Trinity on Friday and StFU on Saturday. The schedules announced early on underwent some revision.

A Game Centre live link for Friday is uploaded. Thus far, The Clown have no live video link on their YouTube channel. The T-irds have one win over each of these teams already, and StFU beat Holy Trinity twice last weekend. This relatively low level of opposition makes it hard to gauge the T-irds. However, they have just uplodaded their roster to their website, although Elite Prospects still has just three names.

September 27, 2024: LAKEHEAD TAKES THE OPENER

LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 4
MANITOBA BISONS 2

Links:
➤ UofM: Schedule & Results
➤ LU: Team Website

Not a bad exhibition game. The Bisons shuffled the deck a bit, and the changes didn’t really work. Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal:
31 Holt (30 Thornton)

Defence:
8 Toth - 25 Calder
24 Wareham - 4 Malchuk
5 Casey - 6 Fry

Forwards:
20 Zaplitny - 22 Stotts - 17 Bruce
9 Alarie - 18 Hooker - 11 Ostir
14 Zimmerman - 19 Arpin - 26 Boucher
12 Trimble - 29 King - 13 Sutter

Scratches:
G: 34 Hawryluk
D: 2 Whittle - 15 Bonni
F: 10 Paulhus - 16 Joss - 21 Pasternak - 23 Lane - 28 Behun

LAKEHEAD
Goal:
1 Cicigoi (30 Vanska)

Defence:
2 Borbely - 5 Turpin
8 Murphy - 22 Izyk
6 Porter - 15 Fasciano
26 Cook

Forwards:
25 Massie - 9 Paul - 10 - Badalamenti
11 DeGrazia - 17 Gerrie - 14 Van Unen
4 Hasselgren - 12 R Whittaker - 21 Pouliot
20 Campbell - 28 Sharun - 13 Crane

Scratches:
G: 31 Cherepak
D: 23 Massie - 3 L Whittaker
F: 16 Blackwell - 27 Mack

Goals by period:
UM 0 2 0 - 2
LU 1 2 1 - 4

Shots by period:
UM 8 11 7 - 26
LU 10 15 10 - 35

The Thundermutts scored the only goal of the 1st when Alex Izyk scored unassisted with no defencemen laying the body on him. Lakehead goaltender Christian Cicigoi stopped a 2-on-1 break, otherwise not much for good chances.

The sides exchanged goals in the 2nd. Riley Stotts scored a powerplay goal to tie the game, Ben Badalamenti restored Lakehead’s lead (on a shot Braden Holt would like to have back), Hayden Ostir again tied it on a powerplay, the Justin Paul put the Wolves ahead to stay (converting a 2-on-1 on a Bison turnover).

The 3rd period was fairly uneventful, with Malte Hasselgren scoring an unassisted powerplay goal. Like the opening goal, no Bison played the body.

One oddity was the three delay-of-game calls, two on Lakehead. The glass at the Dak is not very high.

The Bisons fall to 2-3-0 and Lakehead is 3-0-0.

Goal: TWU: Sommer (50 shots, 43 saves); UBC: Schwebius (12 shots, 11 saves)

I hate to say it, but I fear that Holy Trinity may be on the decline this year. They have lost a lot of talent and the recruiting class is well below average. They finish the pre-season at 2-4-0, with both wins against BCIHL teams. The T-irds are 3-0-0, but their opponents have been just Holy Trinity and Simon Fraser.

There were only three Friday night scratches who entered the Saturday line-up, one goaltender, a defenceman, and a forward. However, lines and pairings did change. Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal:
30 Thornton - 34 Hawryluk

Defence:
15 Bonni - 2 Whittle
8 Toth - 6 Fry
25 Calder - 4 Malchuk

Forwards:
20 Zaplitny - 22 Stotts - 17 Bruce

Scratches:
G: 31 Holt
D: 5 Casey - 24 Wareham
F: 10 Paulhus - 16 Joss - 18 Hooker - 21 Pasternak - 23 Lane

LAKEHEAD
Goal:
31 Cherepak (30 Vanska)

Defence:
26 Cook - 15 Fasciano
2 Borbely - 5 Turpin
8 Murphy - 3 L Whittaker

Forwards:
10 Badalamenti - 9 Paul - 25 Massie
11 DeGrazia - 17 Gerrie - 14 Van Unen
4 Hasselgren - 12 R Whittaker - 21 Pouliot
20 Campbell - 28 Sharun - 13 Crane

Scratches:
G: 1 Cicigoi
D: 6 Porter - 22 Izyk - 23 Massie
F: 16 Blackwell - 27 Mack

Goals by period:
UM 0 2 1 - 3
LU 0 1 1 - 2

Shots by period:
UM 15 9 1 - 25
LU 9 9 10 - 28

The Bisons dominated the 1st period, however Thundermutt goaltender Carson Cherepak was on his game and kept it scoreless. However, as the period closed Ben Badalamenti took a double minor for high-sticking Kian Calder in the face, giving the Bisons a powerplay to start the 2nd.

Once the 2nd period started, Bison Riley Stotts opened the scoring in 32 seconds. The Mutts tied it up when Malte Hasselgren chipped one in on a goalmouth scramble mid-period.

Cade Zaplitny scored similar goals in the 2nd period (to make it 2-1) and then early in the 3rd (to make it 3-1). The 2nd period goal saw him exchange passes with Skylar Bruce and the 3rd period saw those two and Stotts throw it around.

The balance of the 3rd period saw precious few good (or any) scoring chances. At 12:25 Lakehead used the pile-up in the crease tactic. There were a couple of coincidental minors called but Bison goaltender Kolby Thornton was tossed. So Ross Hawryluk finished the game in net. Then Bison d-man Parker Malchuk was cross-checked from behind and retaliated with a two-handed cross-check to the face/neck of a Mutt forward and got a 5-minute major. With barely a minute left, Lakehead did come within a goal using the pile into the crease method. The goal counted, but they never did announce which player was awarded the goal.

The result means that the Bisons end their USports pre-season with a 3-3-0 record, and Lakehead finishes at 3-1-0.

The Manitoba Moose have uploaded their training camp schedule (linked) and their games against the Bisons are, as scheduled, on October 3rd and 8th. We now have confirmation that those games are at the “Hockey for All Centre” and will start at 6:00 p.m.

Although not the home team, the SFU TV crew went cross-town to the FDB Arena to stream this debacle. You can watch at the link. UBC did not provide live stats for this one.

This was a very one-sided game, as the score would indicate, and elevates the T-irds to 4-0-0 on the pre-season. That is two wins each against Holy Trinity and SFU. While this is not great preparation, it probably does not take much to get a playoff berth for them. Three out of four teams in a division which includes Holy Trinity will qualify for the playoffs this year. SFU’s travelling squad will now play most of the rest of the season on the road, playing nothing but exhibition games.

While the rest of the CW starts the regular season on Friday, October 4th, the Bisons have a stretch of four exhibition games in six days, starting Thursday.

At one time, an exhibition matchup between the Moose and Bisons was almost annual. After a break, the rivalry resumed last year. The Moose dominated last year’s games, but the earlier games were quite good. In fact, the Bisons won two-out-of six. The scores were:

October 8, 2002: Moose 6 Bisons 3
September 29, 2005: Bisons 3 Moose 1
October 4, 2005: Moose 6 Bisons 4
September 26, 2007: Moose 7 Bisons 1
September 30, 2008: Bisons 6, Moose 2
September 29, 2010: Moose 2, Bisons 1
October 5, 2023: Moose 5, Bisons 1
October 9, 2023: Moose 5, Bisons 1

I’m not fussy about that 6:00 p.m. start time, but I’ll try to get there as close to face-off as possible. The Moose roster and training camp schedule pages are linked. The teams also play on Tuesday, October 8th, and the Moose start their season on October 12th in Iowa.

Of note, the Bison starting goaltender from last Friday night, Braden Holt, is on the Moose try-out roster.

On the weekend, the Herd is off to the Excited States to face two new opponents - the St. Thomas Tommies and the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. This version of the Tommies is based in St. Paul, Minnesota, not to be confused with their namesakes from New Brunswick who once toiled in the AUS. These are the first two of five games the Bisons will play against NCAA teams.

Both sides were sub-.500 last year but are highly touted by the pollsters. St. Thomas is first in a CCHA coaches’ poll, and UMD is ranked 18th nationally in the USCHO poll. The Bulldogs play in the very high-calibre NCHC.

The Tommies have a “live stats” link on their schedule page, but no on-line audio or video. The Bulldogs, however, have the above radio link.

This is the Battle of Edmontown. They played twice in pre-season, with the Evil Monkeys winning 8-1 and 6-3. Other than those two wins, the Apes were 0-4-1 against the CW. Meanwhile, the Family Guys were 1-3-0 against CW competition. One would think that the Monkeys were saving a few bananas for the regular season.

The Battle of Banjoland is the battle of Canine v. Feline. In the pre-season, the Banjo-Mutts whipped the Banjo-Cats 9-1. To be fair, the Kittens had their usual record for the remainder of the pre-season. The Mutts treated their opponents like a series of fire-hydrants. Their only loss was against the Dinos (by 3-1), the night after beating them 6-1.

A rematch of last year’s championship series is quite a way to start the season. The Bedrock Dinos had a good pre-season, winning six straight after an opening 6-1 loss to Sask.

This is the second of two match-ups where a team from Cowtown visits British California. The Bluegars only had four pre-season games, due to a pair of cancellations. Their only mild surprise was a shoot-out loss to MacEwan. Holy Trinity’s only wins were against BCIHL squads. I honestly fear for them right now.

October 3, 2024: MOOSE TRAMPLE SHORT-STAFFED BISONS

MANITOBA BISONS 0
MANITOBA MOOSE 7

Links:
➤ UofM: Team Website
➤ Moose: Team Website

There are no links about the game anywhere. I got there mid-way through the 1st period when the Moose led 1-0. The Bisons had just five defencemen dressed, an dlost one in the 2nd period. Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA BISONS
Goal:
31 Holt (34 Hawryluk)

Defence:
24 Wareham - 25 Calder
5 Casey - 6 Fry
29 King - 2 Whittle

Forwards:
20 Zaplitny - 22 Stotts - 17 Bruce
9 Alarie - 18 Hooker - 11 Ostir
10 Paulhus - 28 Behun - 26 Boucher
14 Zimmerman - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter

Scratches:
G: 30 Thornton
D: 4 Malchuk - 8 Toth - 15 Bonni
F: 16 Joss - 19 Arpin - 21 Pasternak - 23 Lane

MANITOBA MOOSE
Goal:
50 DiVencentiis (33 Neaton)

Defence:
58 Louis-Jean - 57 McLean
43 Sward - 8 Zloty
3 Musser - 36 McDougall

Forwards:
10 Conley - 29 Chyzowski - 51 Shin
48 Golder - 17 Zhilkin - 25 Ford
40 Torgersson - 14 King - 53 Montgomery
49 Liwiski - 37 Nikkanen - 20 Empey

The Bisons started the night with Michael King as a forward, and Dexter Whittle on defence. Whittle must have been injured in the 2nd period, whereupon King moved to the blueline. This meant that their only four defencemen were four 2nd year players who last year were competing to avoid being healthy scratches. Malchuk, Toth, Bonni, and Whittle have been their top four defencemen this season, and none were available. On a 2nd period powerplay, the Bisons even used a 5-forward alignment.

Braden Holt handled a lot of shots in the Bison goal, after participating in the Moose camp during the week. The Moose outshot the Bisons 59-9. The count may not have been completely accurate, but it was certainly one-sided. Those missing blueliners are definitely needed for the weekend games.

NEWS FROM ACROSS THE CW

Since I posted the weekend preview on Wednesday instead of Thursday, I did not have the links below from four teams, plus the CW coaches’ poll. The CW article is quite good and worth a read. In summary, here’s the poll:
Team - Points (First-place votes)

1 UBC Thunderbirds - 68 (6)
2 Alberta Golden Bears - 64 (2)
3 Saskatchewan Huskies - 56 (1)
4 Calgary Dinos - 56
5 Mount Royal Cougars - 46
6 Manitoba Bisons - 33
7 MacEwan Griffins - 30
8 Regina Cougars- 26
9 Trinity Western Spartans - 17
