Today the Nobel Committee announced the winners of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medecine. The winners- Elizabeth H. Blackburn from UC San Francisco, Carol W. Greider from John Hopkins University, and Jack W. Szostak from Harvard Medical School- received the prize for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.
There is a bit of a side story here. Blackburn served on the Council of Bioethics. She was a harsh critic of the Bush Administration's use of this council as a parrot for hot-button issues.
Congratulations to the new Laureates.
