An 18th-century chateau in France was bulldozed to smithereens, apparently by mistake.

The workers were supposed to tear down a small building on the estate's grounds, but instead destroyed the entire 13,000-square-metre chateau, owned by a Russian businessman.

Dmitry Stroskin had tried for years to find the perfect home, and fell in love with the Chateau de Bellevue in Yvrac, France.

He told the Sud-Ouest newspaper he didn't know his dream home had been destroyed.

"I'm in shock," he said.

Locals have launched complaint over a breach of the town's building code, but Stroskin doesn't plan to pursue legal vengeance.

"The damage has been done," said Stroskin, who runs an import company in Poland.

Instead, he plans to build an identical chateau on the land.
But he'll have to wait. Yvrac Mayor Claude Carty has ordered all renovation in the area be stopped while officials carry out a full investigation.

When I was in the construction biz years ago a new building was going up. Next to it and on the grounds of the site was an old (yet small) brick building... seemingly out of place. A passerby during a friendly conversation with the owner said...

"I wonder if that brick building has any historical significance?"

After the passerby went on his merry way the Owner and GC dispatched the bull dozer and immediately to the structure and tore it down and hauled away the debris. Within hours there was nothing but a patch of dirt ready to be seeded. lol

It simply would not have fit in with the landscape design... and that was that.

I am sure the Town Historical Society would have descended upon the job site lickity split to stop construction.

Of course they would and the land owner would be stuck having to give public access points, put up with moonbeams, debuntantes and crackheads crashing on the lawn he'd have to maintain for the city.

My money is on: He wanted to renovate/rebuild but couldn't because of the town building code (18th century chateau is probably designated heritage) and, whoops, big mistake by the wrecking ball crew. Oh no, guess he'll have to rebuild "a replica" (wink, wink).
