    Trying my hand at pickling

One of the things I'm wanting to try my hand at is sauerkraut. MMmmm. But, I'm starting with the carrots, and I'll go from there.

There are some recipes out there for fridge pickles. It might work to use the leftover brine.

Yeah, I've heard of that technique. I'm thinking I might try it once I finish a jar of carrots.

    Karrie's Garden Masterpieces

Oh, and, if anyone should happen to be wandering past my house after work, I have scads of lettuce to get rid of, should they want to pick some for a salad. ;-)

    Karrie's Garden Masterpieces

I've been finding with my basil that picking it seems to speed it up. The more I pick, the faster it grows. If I leave it, it pretty much stays dormant. Most of my tomatoes are cherry tomatoes.... a few plum tomatoes and a couple heritage that are really not thriving. My faves are the cherry...

    Karrie's Garden Masterpieces

I've managed to pull off a few real hits this year from the garden. Tossed salad with dill, chives, and thyme chopped fine and sprinkled over top have been one of the most common and we've hit the point where we're sick of them, even though they're delish. So, last night, I twisted my usual...

The other thing I'll be doing is zucchini relish, since I have 7 or 8 hills of zucchinis. I can't wait! That's easy enough to heat process without damaging the texture thankfully, so, no worries there. Although, most of the relish recipes I've seen don't call for it. Chutneys... mmmm...

    Trying my hand at pickling

thanks juan... it's the over processed limp carrots I'm trying to avoid... I hate that feeling. If you say they won't go limp, I trust you.

Okay, well, I'm getting conflicting views juan. Do you heat process your pickles? The sweet syrupy kind, I can see why you heat process, like bread and butter, etc. But, pickled carrot spears, the vinegar and salt based ones, I like crunchy. I don't want to have to heat process. Some sites...

    Trying my hand at pickling

yes mabudon... if I can talk my girlfriend into giving me some of her harvest I might do some beans. But, mine didn't come up, and fresh beans here are comparatively expensive. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I can get some.

    Trying my hand at pickling

Yep... I'm about to start trying pickling. Any suggestions? Fave tricks? Fave recipes. I think I'm starting out simple enough... carrots, eggs, and garlic are the three things I'm doing up. I want to do some of the carrots with garlic and chili pepper, some with dill (I have a huge crop...

    Lucky to be Alive

Lucky to be alive. How many times have you heard people say this when they have a near miss incident? It was a news story about a car crash that recently made my mind start churning. The broadcaster said 'we'll be talking with the man who survived a horrible car crash on the weekend, and says...

    Quoting full articles

Seriously guys... I'm going to start a new thread here, because I don't want to single out any one poster... there are a few here who do it... but STOP quoting entire articles in your replies! Fer crying out loud... quoting a 10 paragraph article just to give a one line reply to it is...

    Culture of Fear

Okay, so, it's come up repeatedly. How many mass murder threads, torture thread, brutal slaying threads do we have on here right now. We've fought about our reactions to them (some react wrong, like the jokers, some react right, like me... ha!), and we've fought over the reasons behind them...
